Interlude 14
~Schuldig~
Ken's mental issues had very little to do with the boosting. That guy's mind was a mess. Sure, the boost had dragged those violent impulses to the front of his mind, but he'd always had them. I guess heightening his skills had also increased his desire to cause havoc. I did the best I could to lock the worst of those urges behind mental bars while still leaving him the edge he needed to be able to do his job. I was walking a fine line, but I think I'd done a good job. He'd just have to be careful when he went on mission.
I leaned back against the raised part of my hospital bed and closed my eyes. Tip-toeing around someone's head was no big deal. Locking away parts of a person's mind was a little more trying but still pretty easy. Doing both things at once while trying not to fry somebody's brain upped the difficulty level. Having that person subtly fight your presence in his mind while doing all that was migraine inducing. On the plus side, Ken wasn't looking so hot shit himself after my little romp through his head.
“Done. Leave the cooler under the bed. Damn orderlies keep taking away all my good shit unless it's out of sight,” I said in a tired voice with a wave of my hand.
“So I'm good now? You fixed it?”
“You're as good as you're gonna get without some intense therapy. I don't do therapy, although I hear the pay is pretty good. I do kinda like the idea of getting paid to legally screw with people's minds.”
Ken made a sound of disgust, but put the cooler where I told him. He said good-bye to Aya and Yohji and was about to leave when the phone beside my bed rang. He stopped and waited, reasonable I guess since only a few people knew I was in the hospital, and thus the call likely had something to do with either team Weiss or team Schwartz. Yohji picked it up as he was closer than me or Aya, handing me the phone after saying hello.
“Schuldig, I got a call after I left the hospital. The crew from Rosencrantz is here. It's The Letters. Make your shields air-tight and include Aya and Yohji. I'm telling Scythe that you got into a bar fight, were knifed from behind and are recovering in the hospital. I've already spoken with the doctor and he's cleared you to come home tomorrow provided you take it easy.”
I thanked Crawford for the heads up and passed the phone to Yohji to hang up. I'd be making my shields so tight, a speck of dust wouldn't be able to squeeze past them. Crawford telling me to include Yohji and Aya wasn't necessary, but he didn't know that. For the most part, whatever I did mentally now, they were involved in because of the fusion. They were also mine to protect and I loved them. Of course I'd make sure they had the best shields I could provide.
The Letters.
A nasty smile stretch across my lips. I owed those fuckers big time. I was going to fry that bitch, Scythe. Then I was going to reduce Siphon to a drooling idiot for that beating he'd give me that one time. I didn't care much what happened to Spook and Shock although a few choice stabs of pain in the brain wouldn't be a bad idea for either of them before Farf had his way with them. They all deserved to die for messing with me and my team mates.
Anger spiked from Yohji and Aya. A dangerous sounding growl actually slipped past Aya's lips and Yohji toyed with his watch while vivid pictures of garrotting The Letters flicked through his mind. I smirked. No way in hell were they going to be able to catch us off-guard and screw with our heads this time.
“I'm gonna guess that wasn't exactly good news coming down the pipe. Care to share, guys?” Ken asked.
“The team from Rosencrantz is here. You think Schwartz is evil? You have no idea what evil is.”
Ken swore and ran a hand through his hair. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Shit. I guess its game time then.”
“Ja. And there's no way in hell we're going to lose this one. We can't.”
