Ordinary World
( Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue
Thought I heard you talkin softly.
I turned on the lights, the tv, and the radio
Still I can't escape the ghost of you.)
Ran walked into the empty apartment, his red hair soaked with rain, and someone else's
blood on his clothes. His last mission had turned into a messy one. Everyone else was out on
one of their own missions or, in Yohji's case, at some all-night party. He sighed to himself and
removed his long black trench coat, he set it down and went to turn on a few lights. He reached
out his hand and stopped. He turned around a bit confused and a little frightened. For a momment
he could've sworn he had heard the voice of his younger sister calling to him. But, when he
turned he found nothing but darkness. (Just a ghost.) he thought sadly. WHen he was alone his
mind tended to wander. It left the present and receeded into the past, to the day of the accident.
Ran shook his head and flicked the lights on, looking around once more to make sure no one else
was around. He made his way towards the coach and turned on the television. He sighed angrily,
finding the same old junk on. He didn't turn it off though. He reached behind him and flicked on
a small radio that sat nearby. He closed his eyes and hoped to find a momments peace. However,
the music only seemed to worsten things. There, burned into the backs of his eyelids replayed
the horrible accident that had put is sister into a comma. The scene played over and over, like
some horrible movie projector, as the music played. Ran finally opened his eyes and wiped away
the fresh tears that had begun to form. It was no use. No matter what he did he could never
escape his sister's ghost. Aya had to be avenged. Takatori and those who serve him must die.
( What has happened to it all?
Crazy summer days
Where is the life that I recognize?
Gone away.
But, I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find.
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive.)
Ran stood up and looked in a mirror. FOr a momment he didn't recognize the man he had
become. It seemed like his whole life was centered around revenge. Revenge for his dead family,
and revenge for his sister. How many more teams would he join before it was finally over?
Silently, he wondered what had happened to the man he once was. Where was the Ran that Aya would
recognize? (No!) He shook the thought from his head. Tears were useless now. He had to learn to
survive, to move on. Aya would understand. She had always been there for him before. WHen his
revenge was complete he'd do everything he could to make sure is younger sister was happy and
safe. He'd go back to being the overprotective big brother that he had once been, and Aya would
be alright. He would not cry for yesterday. He would survive, and find his way back to his once
ordinary life. That life that so may considered boring was the one thing Ran would give anything
for at the momment. Unlike most people, he was tired of adventure. He just wanted to have a normal
job, and to have Aya annoy the hell out of him like she did when she was little.
(Passion or coincidence once prompted you to say
Pride will tear us both apart.
Now pride's gone out the window, cross the rooftops, runaway
Left me in the vacuun of my heart.)
Aya had once told Ran that his pride would one day be his downfall, and now it seemed she
was right. His pride had all but vanished. It ran off and left him with a cold and uncaring
heart. A fear of ever getting close to anyone. He thought if he ever cared for anyone the way
he cared for his younger sister they'd disappear. He tried to act proud around the other members
of the team. ALways cool, calm, and in control on the outside, but on the inside he was scared.
He was scared that he'd lose them. That he'd lose the only people he had that even came close to
being his friends. Especially little Omi. He had begun to think of Omi as a younger brother, he
didn't show it, of course. He didn't want to show it. He didn't want them to see his weakness,
if he kept his feelings to himself and his heart a vacuum, then there was no attachment and no
pain.
( What is happening to me?
Crazy sumer days
Where is my friend when I need ya most?
Gone away.
But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive.)
Ran walked to a nearby window and looked up at the stars, remembering. He had had a
friend once. His code name had been Knight. They had worked together in Crashers, another assasin
group. He laughed a little remembering how angry he could make Knight at times. Ran had tried to
be cold and heartless in Crashers, but with no luck. Knight had brought out the best in him. In
those days, he smiled only for his best friend, and Knight was his best friend. He sadly wondered
where Knight was now. What he was up to? Would he even recognize Ran if he passed him by? Maybe,
but Ran's attitude had changed since his days in Crashers. He no longer *tried* to be cold, he
was cold. Knight had been a lot like Yohji. Cheerful, kinda lazy, and an all around nice guy.
Because of Knight, it was easy for him to be mean to Yohji without hurting him too much. He had
learned what buttons he could and couldn't push from Knight. Maybe once this was over he'd try to
find Knight again, just for old time's sake. It was getting harder to deal day by day and he
needed his friend, but Knight was no longer around. So he had to learn to deal with it by himself.
It hurt, but if he wanted his life back he had to deal.
( Papers in the road side tell of suffering and grief
Here today, forgot tomorrow
Here beside the news of only war and only me
Our's is just a little sorrow too.)
Ran walked back outside and silently watched as papers telling of today's suffering blew
down the streets. Compared to the pain the rest of the world was in, Ran and Aya's grief was
small. Somewhere a war raged out of control and a people were going hungry. Somewhere Ken was
killing a drug lord and Yohji was arguing with a dealer. SOmewhere Takatori and Schwarz were
preparing for their own battle against Weiss. Today people would weep for these loses, but by
tomorrow they'd find something to take their minds off of it. That was human nature. He would
fight in that secret war with Schwarz and he would win. Revenge would be his, and this little
sorrow would be paid for.
( And I don't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive.
I will learn to survive.
I will learn to survive.)
Ran walked up to a nearby house and silently ran the doorbell. The door swung open and a
familiar man in a white suit glared at him. "I've come to get Omi." Ran growled. The man nodded
and called for Omi. Within minutes the little blond was outside and walking happily by Ran's
side. "Aya," he said, "Schwarz is creepy, but Nagi's not all that bad." Ran nodded at Omi and led
him in. The young, hopefully innocent looking enough, boy had been on a recon mission. He was
studying their enemy as Ran was sure Brad would be doing, but in a different way. Omi ran through
the house, turning off extra lights as well as the television and the radio which Ran had left on.
"Oi Aya! You really need to think about the bills." Ran smiled a little as Omi ran off into
another room, seeking out the one other useless light Ran had left on. He wouldn't cry for his
past, he'd show no emotion and move forward to a normal life. He would protect that whiche he
cared about, and never feel pain again. Until the time was right, he'd show his sorrow only
through his eyes and use his sister's name to keep him on track. He would survive.
-The End.
