Hm, another short chapter. Sorry. At least I got it up on time. Thank you, evil Jy, for your review. I now have a whopping total of //four// fans. Whoo hoo.

It didn't feel like she'd slept long the next time she woke, which proved true when she glanced at her clock in the dark room. It was eleven-fifty-nine. How sickeningly ironic that she would have to face the last, lonely minute of her birthday awake after all.

Something small, wet, and rough ran over her wrist, making her jump and draw out the dagger she had hidden in the headboard before she even got the lamp on the bedside table on. A fluffy, long-haired, black kitten looked up at her with the most beautiful pair of green eyes she'd ever seen. Wound with a crimson ribbon around its slim neck was her final rose, along with a square of white paper that was obviously a note. Stunned she reached out and pulled the collar from the feline's neck and read the few lines, written in unfamiliar handwriting, that were the only sure form of communication she'd gotten from her gift-bearer all day.

//A companion that will love and trust unconditionally for the girl who needs and deserves it most. Happy Birthday, koi.//

She couldn't help it. She made the most undignified, humiliating, //girly// noise known to mankind. She squealed.

The sudden noise from upstairs froze every one of the four men sitting down in the living room. Even Aya, who'd been expecting some sort of reaction, had no idea that it would be so strong. A door burst open with a clash as it slammed against the opposite wall, then hurried footsteps raced down the steps, skipping every two or three along the way. Lena appeared at the bottom, happier than any of them had ever seen her in the year they'd known each other, and clutching a little black kitten to her chest, which was just barely concealed in the flimsy, gray pajama shirt, held on by two narrow straps over her shoulders.

"I can't believe it! He gave me a kitten! Isn't she gorgeous?! Oh, I don't care which one of you idiots did it, I love you all!" Their inability to move from sheer shock aided the girl as she swept around the room bestowing hugs and kisses on all of them. Even Aya.

Omi was the first to recover and smiled very fondly down at the excited girl. "I'm glad he got you the right gift. I'm beginning to wish I had thought of it. Happy Birthday, Lena." Much more sedately, he bent down to lay a chaste kiss on her forehead.

"I don't know who did it, but you deserved it. The fur ball is kinda cute." Ken gave her a brotherly peck on her cheek and a quick one-armed hug around the shoulders.

Yohji caught the other cheek with his lips a second after Ken had released her. "Just keep it out of my room and it will maintain its cute status. I'm glad someone was able to make you happy today."

Aya had remained in his chair, watching the proceedings. If he were to kiss the girl like the others, there was really only one part left, but he wasn't that type of guy, so he stayed where he was. There was only one thing to say that wouldn't blow his cover or his reputation, "It's your birthday?"

Lena's face fell for just a second, and he mentally kicked himself for being such a bastard the one time he should have been civilized, but a quick lick of the kitten's rough tongue on her chin and she was smiling again as if it had never happened. "Yes, Aya, I'm eighteen today. You don't mind cats, do you?"

He wished it were possible to physically kick oneself, but he didn't let any of his thoughts show on his impassive expression. He had just blown her off completely, and she was now worried about whether //he// minded if she kept her new pet, which she obviously loved more than any one of them in the room right then. "No . . . happy birthday." He'd better not mind, seeing how he'd been the one to slip the little fluff ball into her bed while she was sleeping.

Said fluff ball began meowing pitifully just then, and struggling to be let down to explore. Lena set it down and watched with a huge smile as it began chasing dust bunnies around the floor, occasionally pouncing on a shoelace. "I don't know what to name her," the girl murmured in the silence as they all watched the antics of the young cat.

"Fur ball."

"Fluffy."

"Fuzz."

"How about something that doesn't start with an F?"

"Sable."

Everyone turned to stare at him, wide-eyed and slack-jawed. The sight was actually quite funny. Lena then recovered and grinned. "It's perfect! Thank you, Aya."

Well, he felt like he'd redeemed himself at least partially, now. It wasn't long before the kitten and her new owner were both yawning and returned upstairs to climb back into bed. The men drifted off to their own rooms after that and Aya found himself, once again, wide awake in his empty bed.

His emotions were getting out of hand lately. If he didn't take care of it, it would be a hazard during his next job.

. . . What the hell had possessed him to call Lena //koi//?!

Isn't Aya adorable? Of course he is! By the way, I finally got my hands on a copy of this series and have been devoting quite a bit of time to watching it. Does anyone else hate that gross orange sweater he's always got on?!
