Oh, Crawford. Nagikins. I have a little gift for you, Farfarello's voice chuckled into their minds.
Is it still breathing?
For the moment.
One of us will be there in a while.
I thought you might say that.
Nagi smiled slightly to himself then nodded to Crawford. “I'll go. Schuldig always seems calmer when you're close to him.”
“He still trusts me. No idea why, but he does.”
“You've never given him a reason to not trust you. Nor have Farf or I. I certainly hope he's still out of it from the drugs enough that he can't hear our conversations.”
“He has been so far. It's like he used up everything he had just to get here.”
“That's hardly surprising.”
Crawford nodded and smiled a little. “I wonder if this would have happened if I'd handled things differently with him,” he mused. “Gods know I certainly didn't see this happening.”
“We'll never know, will we. Hindsight is always 20/20,” Nagi said, walking out and closing the door to the penthouse.
Half an hour later Nagi stood in front of the chained and gagged man that Farfarello had been hunting for the last few days. Staring dispassionately into a face he knew all too well.
“I might have known,” Nagi said with a bitter smile. “Too bad he's unconscious.”
“I didn't think he'd come willingly to his death,” Farf said with a mild sneer.
“Probably not. Play with him if you like, Farf. But leave his face.”
Farf looked at him oddly. “Why?”
“A beautiful visage to hide the monster within.”
