The blonde’s mother noticed his unsettled demeanor and the lack of time he spent with Ken. She pestered him with all sorts of questions. To get her off his back, he started to invite other school friends to the house to make it seem as if he’d moved on. But that only heightened the woman’s suspicion because all of the new guests were female. She just knew that one of the girls had to be the one who Omi had used the condom with. Yoko and Van became her personal spies to make sure no funny business was going on in the eldest son’s bedroom. But Omi had proven to be a perfect gentleman and hardly seemed to pay the girl’s much attention outside of sharing homework information. Surprisingly, he was also more helpful at home and kinder with his younger siblings. His parents were happy to see that his old genuine self was returning. Especially, in such record time. He and Yohji were talking much more often and the older man’s positive influence did wonder’s for Omi’s self esteem.

One Sunday morning Omi heard rapping at the front door. He looked through the peephole and saw that it was Ken. He took a deep breath and started to unlock the door. It was time to face the other boy. “Konichiwa,” Ken said politely.
“Hey.”
“Can I come in?” Omi shrugged his shoulders and moved to the side. “Wow, it’s been a long time since I’ve been here, like two weeks,” Ken laughed.
“What’d you stop by for?”
“You know why. Our friendship is in the toilet.”
“I’m not even sure that we even have one.”
Ken furrowed his brow. “Of course we do. We just haven’t been clicking lately is all.”
“You really let me down that night at the party.”
“I know.”
“You knew that I didn’t want to be there and then you abandoned me.”
“I went looking for you.”
“Well, you didn’t look hard enough. I almost got jumped once you sent me packing.”
“I didn’t think you were really gonna leave. I thought you’d come back or something or that you were just gonna wait in the car. The damn thing recently broke down on me by the way. Which, I took as a sign that I’d done you wrong. Anyhow, when I finally realized that you were gone I thought you were trying to play a prank on me or something that night. And I promise I didn’t know that you felt this way.”
“Why didn’t you come to me sooner about this? It shows how much you care,” said the blonde most sarcastically.
“I tried to but I never got the chance. You’ve been ignoring me.”
“Well...”
“We’ve both been wrong lately. Let’s just put this behind us okay. I miss you.”
“I miss you too,” Omi confessed. “Alright, enough of this mooshy stuff. Friends?” Omi proposed.
“Friends,” Ken agreed with a hand shake. “Let’s go see a movie tonight, for real this time.”
“Uhm, I kind of already promised I’d do something with Yohji tonight.”
“With Yohji?”
Omi nodded bashfully. “Yeah, he’s coming over. But I couldn’t leave the house anyway. My parents are going on a date tonight so, I have to stay here and watch the kids.
“Alright. Let’s try it another day then. I’ll get going now. I’ve got some errands to run.”
“Okay.”
“I know that I don’t seem like the right person to be giving advice right now but...you shouldn’t get so wrapped up in this guy.”
“I’m not. It’s totally platonic between he and I.” Ken still gave him a doubtful look. The older boy could clearly tell a difference in Omi’s demeanor when talking about Yohji. “I know what I’m doing.”
“Okay well, it’s really nice talking to you again, Omi.”
“That it is, Ken,” the blonde said with a grin. “That it is.”

After helping his mother clear the dining room table from the lunch they’d finished earlier, Omi scurried off to his room. Yohji would be coming for him soon. When he was all done, he checked himself out in the mirror. He looked smart in a crisp white button down shirt and dark jeans. Making sure that his hair looked just right he also eyed the counter space for his cologne. He gently dabbed himself with the scented liquid. It was a little much for just hanging out with a friend but Omi tried to down play the fact in his mind. In truth, he wanted to be sexy and desirable to Yohji yet it was mostly just wishful thinking. He didn’t expect the man to fall head over heals for him but Omi liked entertaining the idea. Thus, he began to prepare himself as if he were going on a date.
When Yohji arrived, Omi was already flying to the front door to greet him. He’d been watching out of the window anticipating when Prince Charming’s car would pull into view. Yohji met a smiling face at the entryway. “Hi there.”
“Hello, Yohji.”
“Okay, I brought four different types of movies to choose from. Two are horror flicks, one is a comedy and the other is more of a science fiction deal,” Yohji said as he stepped through the threshold.
They decided on the comedy and it was better then each of them expected it to be. Occasionally, Omi would glance over at his friend wondering what was on his mind. Perhaps Ken was right, maybe the blonde was getting wrapped up in Yohji but he just couldn’t help it. He still wanted to impress Yohji and show the man how grown up he could be. Omi was still convinced that backing down that night when he and Yohji were becoming intimate had damaged his appearance in the older boy’s eyes.
Omi was tired of being thought of as irresponsible and incapable of making adult decisions. His mission was to prove to both Yohji and his parents that he was mature and well aware of the world. He’d been helping out around the house like crazy and doing all of his homework before dinner. His entire demeanor was quickly becoming that of a stable young gentleman.
The two shared a bowl of popcorn and the aroma brought Yoko into the room. “Popcorn,” she smiled.
“You want some?” asked Yohji.
Before the man could hand it to her she reached down and grabbed at the bowl. Her hands fumbled and most of it spilled to the ground. “Oh, I’m sorry,” she said, feeling embarrassed.
This was right about the time when Omi should have torn her a new one. That’s how he usually handled things whenever Yoko or Van made a mistake like this especially if it involved having to clean something up. “Yoko! You [bitch]...little stinker.” Now was his chance to show Yohji how tolerant he was. “Here, I’ll help you clean it up,” the blonde said calmly. Yoko gave him a strange look. Omi could tell she was suspicious. “But I ain’t doin’ it all myself. Get down here,” he added. Maybe that would throw her off the trail. Yohji offered to help but Omi said he had it all under control. He and his sister made a trip to the kitchen to throw out the soiled popcorn and make some more.
“Thanks for not yelling at me in front of Yohji,” the girl said politely.
“Well, this is the new me. I’m gonna try not to do so much of it anymore.”
“You’re wrong.”
“How do you mean?”
“This is the old you. You didn’t used to be such a jerk. Now it’s like I can’t even go a full day without you scolding me. Even if I have done something wrong, I really wish you wouldn’t be so hard on me. Sometimes it really hurts, more than I let you know. And it’s embarrassing, even if it is just in front of mom and dad or Van.”
“Well...the jerk is gone,” Omi smirked. “Good riddance, right?”
“Right.”
At the end of the night, it was evident that Yohji was getting tired. “This was fun. It was good spending time with you again. You’re a fun kid.”
[Kid? Why not just friend or side kick? Whatever!]
After Yohji left, Omi retired to his bedroom. His mother came in to say goodnight. “How’s it goin’ kiddo?”
[Kiddo? Will this never end?] Omi thought to himself. I think I’m gonna get ready for bed.”
“Alright, sounds like a good idea. But I wanted to talk to you about something else. Me and your dad are going to have to make another trip up to the hospital this weekend to visit his uncle. He’s finally well enough to be sent home and he’ll need our help settling since none of his children will be able to make it up there and his wife can’t do it all on her own. We might have to spend a couple nights up there until a nurse can start making trips to the house. Did you want to come with us. Ohashi-san will be staying over here to look after Van and Yoko.”
“Sure. That’ll be great to go with you guys.”
“Well, good then, I’ll tell your father.”
+++
In the morning, Omi got ready for school as usual and was the first one at the breakfast table. His father appeared next, sitting across from his son. “So you’re goin’ with us this weekend, huh?”
“Yeah.”
“Excellent. Do you want another ride to school today?”
“No, I think I’m gonna start catching the bus with my friend again.”
“So you’ve ironed out your differences I take it?”
“Yeah. We’re trying to at least.”
Omi met up with Ken at the bus stop. The brunette was yawning uncontrollably. “I just wanna crawl back into bed. I have a good mind too,” he murmured. “Hey, you wanna skip today and just hang out at my place again?”
“No. I should go to school.”
“Oh, that’s right, you’ve gone straight arrow.”
“Well, it’s not just that. I’ve done a lot more goofing off in the classroom than you have and it’s taken me a while to pull things back into place, I’m not about to spoil it all now. Absence and tardiness count against your academics scores and I need all the point’s I can get in case I don’t do so well on the semester exams this week.”
“Oh, that’s right. They start this Wednesday. And then there’s a two week vacation waiting on the other side for us!”
“Just another reason why I should stay buckled down, freedom is just around the corner.”
At school, Omi did his best to pay attention and take helpful notes for the big exams coming up. He even took up reading through his lunch period, occasionally nibbling on a sandwich or sipping on cola. Ken and his friends watched onwardly in amazement. Lunch wasn’t supposed to be about studying it was supposed to be about...lunch.
+++
The school day ended and Omi found himself walking home from the bus stop after waving good bye to Ken.
He came through the front door with exhaustion. “Hey there,” his dad called.
“Hey.”
“Have you started packin’ any of your stuff?”
“No, not yet. Why?”
“Turns out we’re going a little earlier than planned. We leave Friday morning. You’re uncle’s getting released early.”
“No, I can’t.”
“I’ve got exams Friday.”
“I thought you said they were on Wednesday.”
“I have them Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I can’t afford to miss it.”
“Damn...that’s okay. Uh, well...I guess you’ll just have to stay here all by yourself then–No Parties! What am I thinking, the neighbor will be looking after you guys.”
“No. Give me a chance. I can hold down the fort.”
Omi’s mother stepped into the room, she was just catching the latter half of the conversation. “What’s going on?”
“He wants to look after the house himself. No Mrs. Ohashi included.”
The two parents looked at each other with concern. The final decision however, always boiled down to whatever Omi’s mom wanted to happen. “Okay.”
“Really?!” Omi asked in surprise. “Yes!” Responsibility! This meant that someone actually believed in him...his mother no less. Was she a saint of a fool? Who cared? Omi was being given a chance.
The next day went by relatively quickly for Omi since none of his classes were doing any work just studying on account of exams being held the following day. When Wednesday rolled around he did his best to answer each question correctly, and repeated the same procedure on Thursday. When Friday morning finally landed upon him, he woke from bed both excited and nervous. This was his final day of testing and the exams today weren’t as simple as all the others in his opinion. But, for the first time, when he came home today, Omi would be man of the house.
“Alright, Omi,” said his mother, her voice sounding reluctant. “Our flight leaves at 11:00 a.m. as you already know so we won’t be here when you get back,” she reminded her son. “Stop smiling. You make me think you’re planning...no, plotting something while we’re gone.”
“Relax.”
“Me and your dad are putting a lot of faith in you. Being left in charge may seem like nothing to you because a lot of kids do it but it really is a big deal. It’s symbolic of how much we trust you. So no more than one friend over at a time, no drinking or any other drugs and no disrespecting this home, ‘cause it belongs to all of us.”
“Will do.”
+++
Omi went to school for his final day of testing and stepped onto the yard with a deep breath. The sky seemed to be lurking at him, heavy with dark clouds. He kept trying to mentally reassure himself that he would do just fine. After all, he’d studied a lot lately. He’d just been so used to making bad grades lately that he didn’t expect to make any high marks today either. Omi considered the fact that he’d only made bad grades from lack of attention and effort so all of his recent buckling down would reverse that affect.
After the last exam, the instructor went down to the main office to have the answer sheets processed. Every student sat quietly, awaiting the results. When the teacher arrived back in the classroom, she sat at her desk for a moment, logging in all of the grades from the tests into her computer. Then, she started to call the students up to her desk alphabetically to show their corrected exams. Omi was a long way down the list and the tension was unbearable. When his name had finally been called, he barely heard on account of he’d been dreaming up worst case scenarios. Someone had to nudge him a bit before he snapped back into reality. He stood up and walked to the front of the class.
“Omi,” started the instructor as she slid the exam over the table in his direction. “You answered 79 questions correctly out of 100. That gives you technically a high C. But on account of it’s only one point away from a B and you really worked hard with me lately after school studying, I went ahead and gave you the higher grade.”
“Arigatou gozaimasu. I’m very grateful to you.”
“You should be thanking yourself. You’re the one who made it happen.”
Omi sat back at his seat in a delightful daze. He could faintly hear other students being called to the front desk in the background but for the most part his entire surroundings had faded away.
Momentarily, the bell rang which meant class dismissal, which meant two weeks vacation! Omi was eager to get home although, he didn’t know what for. It wasn’t as if his parents were home to congratulate him on the good news he was carrying. Too bad, he was really excited right now. He wanted to see the reaction on their faces when he told them that not only hadn’t he failed but he made a good grade. This was a gifted level class so his B was actually an A in an average class. He was still determined to at least call his parents if he couldn’t talk to them in person.
Nearing his home, Omi was surprised to see a car in the driveway. He strode quickly to the front and let himself in. “Hello?” he asked, walking further into the home. And there they were, sitting in the living room together. Van, Yoko and Yohji. “What are you doing here.” He wasn’t trying to sound rude but this was all very confusing.
“You know why I’m here. You’re parents thought you might need a teensy weensy bit of help.”
“You’re kidding me, right?!” Yohji shook his head. “I should have known. My mom didn’t sound too convinced that I could do this myself this morning. I could hear the reluctance to say ‘yes’ in her voice.”
“Actually, it was your dad who caved.”
“Him? What?! Has the world gone mad? He’s the one whose always in my corner when it comes to stuff like this.”
“I know, he mentioned that. But, he said your mother was making him nervous. She never suggested that I should come over but she kept giving examples of what could go wrong. I guess he couldn’t take the pressure.” Yoko and Van were still watching televison, oblivious as to what was going on. “Anyhow, the kids and I were heading over to my grandmother’s house. Some of my younger cousins are spending the night over there so we’re having a little slumber party, aren’t we?”
“Mhm,” Van nodded.
“That means you can have run of the house all on your own here. We’ll be across the street if you need us.”
“Alright...I guess that’s acceptable, even though it’s not what I had in mind.”
“I’ve got one word for you, ‘privacy’. Ever heard of it? This better than acceptable. You get to do whatever like without any complaints or distractions. Oh yeah, and no parties.”
“Did my dad feed you that last line?”
“It’s a mutual feeling between us.”
+++
Omi sat by his lonesome in the empty house. He was growing bored and he was almost tempted to join his siblings across the street...almost. “Well, no babysitter. It’s what I wanted, I guess.”
As if by psychic connection, Yohji began to think about Omi. Everyone seemed perfectly happy at his grandparents’ house playing board games but the older man still felt like something was missing. When the lights began to flicker on and off due to the distant storm, he excused himself and headed back across the street to the Tsukiyono residence.
Omi was surprised to have Yohji visit him and delighted. “Hey, Omi.”
“Finally had enough of the dwarfs?”
“Nah, they’re cool. It’s game time right now so they’re all preoccupied. What about you? I wanted to make sure you had power. Ours has been giving us trouble.”
“I was actually gonna get ready for bed.”
“It’s too early for that.”
“Yeah, I know but, I’m kind of tired from today and I don’t feel like doing anything else.”
“Let’s go for a short walk.” The blonde looked a him with a dull expression. “C’mon, I’m serious. It feels good outside, it’s brisk.”
“It’s probably going to start pouring again.”
“Well then, we should get a move on before it starts.”
“I don’t think so.”
Not five minutes later, Omi found himself heading back down the hallway to his room to find something warmer to wear outside. He sorted through his clothes trying to find something cleaver to put on. He was still under the trance of trying to impress his older friend. Noting that the boy was taking a little longer than expected, Yohji started toward Omi’s room. The blonde was shirtless and pulling something out of his closet. At the threshold, the older man became uncomfortable. He hadn’t been in Omi’s room since the incident and seeing the boy half dressed just made the memories flood back quicker. Omi hadn’t noticed Yohji standing there and was startled upon turning to see him. “Sorry, I just wanted to see if you were done. I wasn’t spying on you or anything.”
“No, it’s okay. I was just surprised,”said the boy lightly. Yohji nodded. The younger man could see a red tinge growing across his friend’s cheeks. [So we’re both nervous.] Omi came closer with his eyes locked on two green discs that shined back at him. His steps were soft and slow. He was still so unsure about everything...but he was daring enough to find out. Finally, he stood directly in front of Yohji. They weren’t but inches apart. The fact that the older man hadn’t moved said a lot. It meant that he was thinking what Omi was thinking. And all of those thoughts were confirmed when he gingerly sunk his lips down to the blonde boy’s level. The kiss was so delicate, like the petals of a rose, and fleeting like a snowflake in the sun.
Even after their lips had parted they each still felt a type of gravitational pull toward each other. Omi welled with happiness inside and his courage heightened. He reached forward to bring himself closer to Yohji’s body. Roaming his hands around the older man’s back he couldn’t help but realize that the embrace was all his own. Yohji was not hugging back. Omi looked up with confusion when the man began to speak. “Let me go...or this will lead to something else.”
“We were only kissing,” said the blonde’s soft voice.
“You know what this makes me wanna do to you. Now turn me loose.”
Powerful words.
Yohji had to force the boy’s arms away and started back down the hall.
“You can’t just walk away from me after saying something like that,” Omi cried. Yohji’s statement and tone were arousing, almost inviting.
“What do you want to happen? Do you want us to fuck? Will it make you feel like a big boy?”
“I’m passed all that because I am a big boy. I know what I want now. I never thought that I would have the feelings that I do for another man. That night, I was nervous and embarrassed of those feelings. And you’re right it made me feel like a child, so I felt like I needed to prove that I wasn’t,” the blonde said closing the distance between he and his friend. “But now I’m unafraid and you and I share all the same desires. I can see them in your eyes.” The bulge between Yohji’s legs was growing. “But I won’t chase you,” said the younger man as he slowly took a few steps back. “‘Cause if you want me the way that I want you...I won’t need to.” Omi softly raised an eyebrow before returning to his room and sitting on the bed.
What is Karma?
For three days Omi shied away from Ken and then just plain started avoiding the older boy. He wouldn’t take his calls and he’d pretend not to be home if Ken ever stopped by. The brunette finally got the hint after eight days and knew that Omi needed time to himself. The blonde’s mother noticed his unsettled demeanor and the lack of time he spent with Ken. She pestered him with all sorts of questions. To get her off his back, he started to invite other school friends to the house to make it seem as if he’d moved on.
“Will do.”
