Chapter Eight
Llew greeted us at in the entry way. "Schu's asleep right now…I've kept him pretty well sedated. Even his shields aren't enough to keep out all the voices of a panicked New York City." I nodded.
"Thank you, Llew…" I glanced down at Ran and smiled. "Llew, I'd like you to meet Fujimiya Ran… my lover." Llewlyn examined Ran, and when he got the tiny furrow between his brows that indicated he was looking in someone's mind, I snapped, "You're not allowed to read him anymore than you're allowed to read me!" Llew blushed and Ran wrapped his arm around my waist.
"It's ok, koi, there's nothing that I don't want him to see." Ran's lips quirked in the funny little half-smile he gave when he was amused but didn't want to show it. I quickly surmised what he was thinking… when confronted with telepaths, think of something to throw them off. Nursery rhymes, old stupid memories, sex… It was something we'd been taught at Rosenkreuz and something, as Ran once told me, Weiß figured out to stump Schuldich. From Llew's blush, I also guessed that Ran was thinking about sex.
I grinned and kissed the top of his head. "Bra*yawn*ad?" A sleepy, familiar voice came from the hallway.
"Schuldich…" I answered, keeping a tight hold on Ran. "I'm out here." I heard soft, padding footsteps and the German telepath appeared.
"Schatz!" he cried happily and was about to throw himself at me when he saw Ran. "Brad… what's Weiß doing here."
"Schuldich, Ran is…" I wished desperately for a delicate way to put it…
"I'm his lover," Ran said in a quiet voice, and I nodded agreement. Schuldich looked back and forth between us, his green-blue eyes confused.
"You… cheated… on me." He whispered, shocked. "Why, Brad?" My gaze flicked over to Llew.
Don't expect me to explain it, Brad…this was your choice…He said unhelpfully. I told him about the last four years, but he still doesn't quite get it.
"Schuldich… we thought you were…dead. For four years, you were Peter. It's not like I wanted to accept it, but I had to. I still love you, Schuldich, but it's just been too long." I'm sorry, Liebe…
No. You're not. You're NOT! Schuldich screamed at me. He turned, his hand pressed to his forehead, and ran back to his room. The unworthy (and tightly shielded) thought came to me… You can take Schuldich out of the five year old, but you can't take the five year old out of Schuldich. Llewlyn glared at me and went to comfort Schuldich.
"Oh, god, do I need aspirin," I muttered, kissing the top of Ran's head. "I'm sorry about that, Ran…"
"Don't be, Brad. It was inevitable. Look, I know my way up here, how about you go talk to Schuldich and I'll go get some of my crap from the car." I smiled.
"Thanks, love," I murmured and leaned down to kiss him. He returned the kiss, biting at my lower lip, and pulled back.
"I'll take my time," he murmured. "Good luck…" He smiled and walked out of the apartment. I steeled myself and walked the other direction, down the hall to Schuldich's room.
I knocked on the door. "Schu, can I come in?"
No. Go fuck Weiß.
"Schuldich, you're being immature," I said, and opened the door anyway. "We need to talk."
"No, we don't. Go away. You cheated on me… how long did you wait before nailing him? An hour? A day? A whole week out of respect for the dead? [1]" Schuldich glared at me with cold jade eyes and turned his back on me.
"Schuldich, no. A year. A whole year, where I had to see your face, hear your voice, and know I couldn't touch you because your mind was five years old. Do you have any idea how hard that was? How much it hurt? The night Peter woke up from a month-long coma… the night you, five fucking years old, woke up from a month-long coma that I didn't know if you ever would come out of, he… you… invaded my dreams and tried to get me to have sex with you. I felt so dirty after that… I'd almost had sex with a tiny child! Schuldich, we thought you were dead. I thought that for the rest of my life, I'd be seeing the first man I ever loved walking around with a child's mind. Do you have any idea?" By the end, my eyes were burning with held back tears, and so were Schuldich's. "I'm truly sorry, Schuldich, but I love Ran. And he's going to live with us… with me. If you want to move out now, you can, but you're welcome to stay."
"You gave him a ring." Schuldich whispered. "We were together for six years, and you never once did anything like that for me." I smiled sadly.
"Schuldich, wait here." I went to my room and pulled a small box, identical to the one I'd opened for Ran only days before, and brought it back to Schuldich. "Open it," I commanded, holding the small indigo velvet cube out to him.
He took it and opened it slowly. A ring appeared as the lid was raised. This one was gold, with one emerald in the center and two black diamonds on either side of it. "I was going to ask you to marry me after we were finished with Weiß, when we got home," I murmured, and he looked up at me, tears now flowing down his cheeks.
"I…would have said yes…" Schuldich whispered. He closed the jewelry box and gave it back to me. "Go away, please… I just want… you to be happy with Fujimiya." I took the ring and kissed his forehead.
"I am sorry, Schuldich. And if I could still See, I'd See happiness for you someday." I smiled sadly, hiding the truth behind my shields and left him alone.
