Une Vrai Girouette - Prologue

Seagulls squawked as they circled the bay overhead, bathed in the purple twilight as the one lone car finally sped off. The cold night air descended on the ruins of the offshore temple, the tragedy of the situation still not finally sinking in to the people who knew the brave warriors who'd sacrificed themselves for the good of humanity.

Then there were those who'd *been* sacrificed. The four similarly brave, similarly hot-headed young men, who were easily their equals in strength and probably their betters in the mind department.

Though there was hardly room for debate now, the lonely cove had brought on the demise of all eight youths simultaneously. Their unbiased fatalities betrayed only by the bubbles now breaking on the surface of the water…

There was a sudden colossal splash as the bubbles gave way to a head of flame orange hair, reddened by the blood pouring from his forehead. The man gasped and gritted his teeth as the open air intensified the salt water inside his wounds. He looked around him to find, very much to his surprise, that he was entirely alone in the Japanese bay.

"Shit…" he exclaimed softly, brushing his bloody hair out of his eyes and casting another glance around. `Don't tell me they're *all* dead?' he thought acerbically, grimacing and wiping his mouth as the blood ran in. `May as well have a look around,' he added mentally, taking a deep breath before ducking under the water again.

The bay was shallow enough but the wreckage made it very difficult to see what was where and indeed *who* was where. Schuldig looked around in annoyance at the seemingly empty lagoon before spotting a small young body with it's legs trapped underneath something heavy.

`Nagi' he thought to himself. His eyes were blurred with the tiredness and the salt water but he was sure it was him. `Well that's *something* at least. I suppose I should probably help him…'

He swam down to the man and hauled the piece of wreckage off his legs. //Nagi// he called out, opening their line of telepathic communication. //Nagi can you hear me?// he asked, grabbing at the back of his clothing. `Unconscious, great,' he groaned inwardly as he pulled his charge to the surface and across onto the shore.

Schuldig sat up and took a few breaths before looking down at the one he'd rescued as the man began to cough and splutter. His eyes widened ridiculously at the sight of the navy blue shorts and jacket across `Nagi's' body, deep blue eyes on a rounded face and golden brown hair.

"You're not Nagi," he stated irritably folding his arms, alerting the younger man to his presence.

Omi looked up at Schuldig sat staring at him angrily and jumped backwards with a frightened whimper. He looked around frantically for any of his weapons but found none and looked back to the Schwarz. The sedate attitude and one raised eyebrow indicated that he was far from an attack but still…

//Oh my god, I'm completely defenceless… what do I do?//

//What happened?//

//He is *so* going to kill me//

//Where is everyone?//

"Oh relax," Schuldig drawled derisively at all of the panicked thoughts flooding into his head. "Yes, you *are* completely defenceless and entirely at my mercy. I'm just not in very much of a killing mood right now."

Omi frowned. "I didn't… say anything," he said timidly. "Oh right, you read thoughts. I guess I forgot." He hesitated for another moment or two, looking around at the desolate bay as Schuldig got to his feet and walked over to the water's edge, looking out as though he could see below the water.

The youngest WeiB got up and joined him, barely two feet behind him. "Did… did you rescue me?" he asked, immensely curious as to just how after having been buried by a collapsing building, he'd somehow ended up on the shoreline.

Schuldig sighed in frustration. "I thought you were Nagi. I was just doing him a favour," he said flatly. "Believe me, if I had known it was you, I'd have given you a swift blow to the head and that would have been that."

"So why don't you do it now?" Omi asked intently.

The Schwarz whipped around angrily but never let it show on his face. "I'm a little tired, if you must know," he replied. "And, now I think about it, you deserve something much more excruciating. Then again…" he continued, rounding slyly on the little assassin. "That can be arranged."

Omi stepped back and gulped at the slow advance of his nemesis before turning sharply on his heel to see what had just emerged from the water behind him.

His blue eyes almost jumped out of their sockets as the body of Yohji struggled onto the sand, using all his strength to haul along something else. Something human-sized and covered in dark, indigo leather. Omi gasped and made his way towards them as quickly as he could, his progress marred by the deep gashes on both of his legs.

His strength gave out as he reached them and collapsed next to his comrades on the sand. "Yohji!" he exclaimed weakly, lifting his upper half off the floor. "You're okay! How did you-"

"Ken's down there…" Yohji panted, looking down at Aya's seemingly lifeless face wondering whether the man would ever open his eyes again. "Aya… was right next to me… I'm not… not strong enough to get to him and bring him… bring him back."

Omi looked desperately at Yohji as he threatened to pass out again and pulled himself into a sitting position. Tears welled in his eyes as he imagined Ken being trapped, drowning slowly and maybe not even unconscious. He could be awake and suffering through it all, aware that Yohji had saved Aya and not gone back for him.

He turned back to look at Schuldig still stood with his arms folded and obviously in much better shape than WeiB were currently in. `He'd never do it,' Omi thought to himself. `He's made it clear he barely has any interest in saving one of his own, let alone us. But… I can't risk that he might have done it afterwards.'

Omi gingerly made eye contact with the Schwarz and was met with an acid simper. "I know what you're thinking and no," Schuldig remarked casually, turning his head away from his rivals.

Omi gulped back his sobs and got to his feet. "Fine then you heartless bastard!" he yelled across the beach, throwing off his own jacket. And wading out into the water, crying out as the salt rushed in through the abrasions down his thighs and calves.

"Omi, don't! You can't possibly…" Yohji shouted after him, trailing off after Omi stubbornly dived under the water. He lay back on the sand next to Aya and sighed, still struggling to steady his breath. He was perfectly well aware of how much Omi loved Ken and of the enduring bond the two had formed since concurrently joining WeiB.

He knew Omi would have gone in after him even if it had meant certain death. Ken was often the only thing in the younger man's life that kept him going, it got him through the day just knowing that Ken would be there when he got home. Just as Aya meant to Yohji. Although he realised that he would never have his feelings returned, it didn't stop him dreaming.

Yohji sat in a horrifically apprehensive silence, just waiting for the little WeiB to resurface. One minute passed, then two, then three… He was sure Omi wasn't coming back.

//Omi… you had to go, didn't you? You couldn't have left him. If you couldn't live without him, you might as well have risked your life to try and save him because… because without him there's no point. That's what you thought. No, that's what you *knew*. I'm sorry we couldn't make your life any better. I'm sorry I couldn't save him…//

Schuldig sighed and glared at the ocean waves, directing his telepathic senses back out towards the sea. He heard faint whispers of an active mind, two active minds in point of fact, and concentrated. It was fragmented and sparse but he could definitely hear something.

//Don't die//-//you in my life is//-//go on without//

//What happened?//-//Yohji and Aya aren't//-//you did this for me?//

//Ken!//

`I *know* I'm going to regret this for the rest of my life,' the Schwarz thought with great annoyance at himself and his powers and the fact that he sometimes felt desperate to let out some of the information.

"They're not dead, for fuck's sake," Schuldig snapped. "Stop being so sentimental," he demanded of the body slumped across the sand.

Yohji laughed. "Me sentimental?" he said loudly, incredibly irritated at the German and determined not to let it show but knowing that Schuldig probably knew everything already. "You're such a fucking hypocrite. I've seen the way you look at Aya, you're worried sick you big fraud. And a slut to boot."

"Pot. Kettle. Black." Schuldig hissed at the man across the beach. "You're ten times worse than I am. You've got no right to level comments like that //Schuldig! Help!// at me…" he trailed off as another thought interrupted him. The voice was familiar, comforting and quiet. The rest of Yohji's scathing replies were drowned out by his search for the voice's owner.

//Is that you, Nagi?// he ventured hesitantly, afraid that he might be showing emotion to a member of WeiB.

//Schuldig!// the voice cried again. That was unquestionably Nagi. //I can't get out! I'm surrounded by bricks, my arm is caught and my powers are shot. Please… I have to see her again.//

//You mean that Schreient girl? You're *still* not over her?//

//Schuldig, I can't breathe! If you want to berate me for this later, you've got to find me first… I'm not going to last much longer so just make up your goddamned mind.//

The German groaned. "Fine," he said out loud. "I can't believe you're convincing me to do this," he added, pulling off his jacket and shoes, entering the water just as the two remaining WeiB members got out. "Oh well *done*," he muttered sarcastically before diving gracefully under the darkened waves.
