(Foolish Games)
you took your coat off, and stood in the rain
you were always crazy like that
and I watched from my window
always felt I was outside, looking in, on you
Aya sat on the windowsill, hugging his knees which he had pulled up to his chest. His forehead pressed against the windowpane, the chill of the cold glass doing nothing to the feverish heat as he stared out into the rainy night.
Things were different since they had defeated Eszet. Not that the world had changed. The world had hardly taken notice of the fact that Eszet was gone, hadn't known it had existed in the first place. Not even the team had really changed. The job they did was still the same - to hunt down the beasts of darkness. No. Not really things had changed. He had changed. Things had changed for him. His sworn enemy was dead. His sister was awake and safe. There was nothing anymore to keep him focused. Nothing to keep him alert. Nothing to keep the mask up for. He didn't need to always be strong, calm, level-headed and determined anymore. His revenge was complete. He had no purpose in life anymore.
He had too much time to think.
And he spent too much time to think about one certain thing. As if he needed something to focus on again. But it needed to be something that seemed impossible to accomplish. In order to keep him going long enough. In order to give him a reason to live for as long as the mission took to be completed. And this certain thing seemed to be just it... for it seemed impossible to accomplish...
Well... impossible without him losing all his pride and dignity...
Amethyst eyes narrowed as a car pulled up to the apartment building. The door on the passenger side swung open and he watched Yohji step out into the rain. Watched him take his coat off and spread his arms, turning his face up to let the raindrops splash on his face. Watched him laugh. Crazy. A young woman got out from behind the wheel and hurried around the car, taking Yohji by the arm to drag him inside. Aya heard them both laugh. "You're crazy!" she sang. And he gritted his teeth.
It wasn't only a mission. Not only a reason to keep him going. The fact that he had been focused onto something else only had prevented for this to come into focus. He just hadn't allowed for this to become center of his attention. Even though it was hard to ignore, he had always done a good job at it. For the simple reason that he had something to keep him occupied enough to not think about it.
But now he had too much time to think.
His arms tightened around his knees and he leaned his head back against the window frame, staring up at the ceiling. He listened closely into the darkness, picking up every sound from the metallic sound of raindrops hitting on the tin gutters, over the low whistle of the heating system to the soft laughter drifting up the staircase. He could easily distinguish Yohji's chuckle from the giggle of the woman. His fingers dug into the sleeves of his sweater, crumpling the material up, as his violet eyes squeezed shut.
Yohji was smashed. But not enough to not notice the figure at the window up on the third floor. A grin spread on his face as he got out of the car. In a sudden whim he yanked his coat off, spread his arms as if to embrace the world and threw his head back, laughing. The rain splattered into his face, running down his neck and into his shirt, but it didn't cool off his heated skin. His jade eyes were dark as he glanced up to the window. Then his arm was grabbed and his date pulled him down to earth again.
"You're crazy!" Minako laughed and dragged him along. "Come on, you'll catch death, you big kid!"
"Oh, I'm not killed that easily," he slurred. "And I'm not a kid! That's for sure!"
"Oh, yes you are." She shook her head.
They laughed and giggled on their way up to the second floor, every now and then bumping into the walls when he lost his balance. Reaching the door to his apartment, he fumbled with his keys until she took them from him with a giggle.
"Oh boy... if that's any indication... then there's not much hope..." She nudged him playfully and opened the door.
"Hey!" he protested. "I'm not that gone!"
She just laughed. After pushing the door open she led him into his apartment, tossed the wet coat into the bathroom and shoved him backwards onto his bed. She leaned down to him, evading his arm, swinging to embrace her. With another giggle she placed a light kiss on his lips. "Next time, baby," she said huskily and turned to leave.
His eyes followed her. He didn't move or say anything to stop her from leaving and when the door closed behind her he just stared at the door with no regret.
When did that happen? he thought with a frown. Since when didn't he care when a woman just walked away without getting laid? Maybe he was too smashed after all? Odd. Odd, because it had never, never ever happened before. No matter what - he'd always found the strength for that. There was no way in the world that Kudou Yohji would fail with a woman in any way!
But his date had just left. And he didn't even care! He shook his head in utter disbelief at his own reaction - or rather the lack thereof...
He let his head fall back and closed his eyes. After a moment he opened them again and stared up at the ceiling. Even with the drunken haze fogging his mind he was too wide awake to just lie back and sleep. Seemed that drug, combined with alcohol and nicotine was some vicious crap, leaving him all giddy, shaky, wide awake and hot... Damn, it was HOT!!!
With a grunt he rolled over and swung his legs over the side of the bed. Getting up actually turned out to be a challenge, since the room didn't want to stop spinning all of a sudden. He groaned and dropped to his knees, staying on all four for a moment. The good thing was, he didn't feel sick. The bad thing: he'd probably be just the more sick in the morning. He could already feel the headache coming... With the help of the bedpost he managed to get up.
Man, this sucks! Feeling weak like a baby, but sleep not being an option. Damn. He sighed and made for the door. Even though the light hadn't been on in the third floor apartment he knew that the inhabitant wasn't asleep. He'd seen him at the window. Might as well go pester the also sleepless redhead in order to fight boredom during this insomnia.
On shaky legs he moved down the hallway and up the stairs, always one hand on the wall or clutching the railing to keep the staircase from spinning out of control. It was a greater effort than anticipated just to keep himself upright and going. But he managed. At the top of the stairs, eventually reaching the third floor, he had to stop and catch his breath. His gaze wandered ahead, down the hall, and rested on the door that was his goal. He groaned. The way seemed awfully long... He pushed himself off the railing he was hanging on to and stumbled along the corridor, finally bumping into the door unceremoniously. He chuckled. No need to knock anymore...
"He, Aya! Open up! I know you're awake!"
