Broken Claw
Chapter 4
“Eleven-thirty,” he whispered to his watch. “And out on patrol.”
It was near the twilight hours of the night as he stayed on watch. Darkness was everywhere; a moonless sky hovered above him. The only light came from the dim flickering of the streetlamp he rested against.
He was a tall and imposing figure, with his hat pulled down over his eyes. Only a stubble filled, square jaw and tidy dark hair could be seen. Although quite intimidating, the black trench coat he wore gave him a sense of inconspicuousness in the dwindling crowds of people. He kept looking around forever, but his hand trembled in his pocket.
His eyes at last locked onto to someone, a boy who looked no less than seventeen. He came walking down the sidewalk; his blonde curls trouncing as he went. He kept his head down, not wanting his grey eyes to connect with anything. The boy seemed like everyone else, but he took interest in him… The boy finally passed him by, but he could not be just nonchalant. From his pocket, he whipped out his gun and placed it at the back of the boy's head. The cold steel of the magnum sent shivers throughout the boy's body.
“W..what's—“ the boy stammered.
“Shut up!” He commanded blankly.
“I got money… It's in my wallet! Take whatever you need but please don't kill me!!”
“I don't want your goddamn money,” He said calmly.
“What do you want? I'll give you anything.”
“Your life will do nicely.”
A single shot was sounded. The boy stood stunned at first and soon fell with a lifeless thud. The boy cried out in one last yelp of pain before he ultimately died. His murderer put the gun back in his pocket and left the scene as if nothing had happened.
“One down… so many more to go…”

Toboe suddenly rose from where he laid. He panted heavily, his body in a cold sweat. A nightmare—or a memory rather—had waked him up violently. He saw the days leading up to when he joined Kiba. Before then, he had met a girl. She gave him food when he was a wolf, and was his playmate when he was human. All was well until the girl finally realized what he truly was. All of the time spent together was quickly dashed by fear and instilled prejudice.
He looked around for Tsume. Not matter how cold he would be, Toboe enjoyed being around him. Underneath, Toboe knew that he really cared. However, when his eyes saw nothing where Tsume was last seen, he began to panic. He immediately shook Hige.
“Hige..” Toboe whispered. “Hige, are you awake?”
Hige got up slowly. “I am now…What's wrong?”
“It's Tsume, he's not here!”
Hige with a lazy gaze looked at Tsume's empty palate. Without words, he went back onto his side. Toboe was left puzzled.
“Hey! I just told you Tsume is missing!”
Hige closed his eyes and yawned. “He's fine. He's probably doing whatever it is when he's alone.”
“But—“
“Tsume is fine. He can take care of himself…”
And with that, Hige again drifted of to sleep.
I don't know, Hige…Toboe thought.
