Broken Claw
Chapter 9
Nadeko had gone in low spirits and came back sunk even more. She remained in her silent grief and did not say a word to Tsume as she checked him. Her bubbly but stubborn personality had transformed into the sulking, brooding woman before him. Tsume didn't fight her again when Nadeko checked his vitals. He felt no reason to. She was already beaten down enough. The doorbell then rang throughout the house.
Nadeko was in the middle of taking Tsume's temperature. “Damn… he's persistent….”she sighed under her breath. She put down the thermometer on the table and went to answer the door. Tsume heard someone come in, one of a much heavier build, and follow Nadeko back down the stairs.
“I wasn't expecting you `til later, Katsui,” Nadeko began to explain as she entered the room with a tall blonde man in uniform in tow.
He walks like he got a stick up his ass. Tsume thought as the policeman walked rigidly behind Nadeko.
“Then again,” she continued. “It was not much to say. I'll get you the papers.”
“Thank you, doctor.” Katsui replied.
Nadeko went to her counter and shuffled through the papers there as Katsui waited with his back straight and his shoulder rounded back. Still, the eyes remained on Nadeko as she worked. It was almost as if he was undressing her with them… Tsume held back a laugh. With such a proper air, his eyes stared longingly at her backside. Tsume swore that he saw Katsui try to reach out and touch it but Nadeko found the document before he could.
“Here it is,” she then said handing it over.
Disappointed. Katsui regained his former composer. “Thank you, doctor.”
If she only knew…Tsume thought.
A moment of awkward silence passed over them both. Nadeko thought that as soon as Katsui got what he wanted that he would then leave. Instead, he lingered on as if wanting to talk to her.
“Doct —er—Nadeko?” he said.
“Yes? What is it?” she asked.
“Um…I couldn't help but notice that you're not in a good mood.”
No shit!
Nadeko sighed. “Wow, how did you guess?”
Katsui then came close to her. “Look, Nadeko, I…I know this must be hard for you, too…with these wolves and all…and your father and brother…”
Nadeko then glared angrily at Katsui.
What a dumbass!!
Katsui then realized that he messed up and tried to smooth things over.
“I'm sorry, Nadeko!! I didn't—“
“You got your papers, sergeant,” she simply said. “I think you should leave.”
He tried to put a comforting hand on Nadeko's shoulder but she smacked it away. He tipped his hat and discreetly left, making little noise as he did. Nadeko then busied herself in restocking her shelves.
She kept her back to Tsume while she did. Nadeko filled the cabinet quickly and furiously, slamming down in place what she had. It was until a she dropped a vial that all was truly lost. Nadeko picked it back up and threw it hard against the wall where it shattered in a million pieces. Just like the vial, she fell apart and collapsed on the counter. Nadeko began to sob loudly and heart felt. She had had enough.
Tsume laid there in awe. He did not know why, but that woman's tears did something to him. A part of him wanted to calm her and wipe her tears away. But he couldn't bring himself to; her straps stopped him.
