Prologue: The Voice That Calls

---------------------------------------------------------------- ----------

A young girl, approximately six-years-old, snuggled up against a gray wolf in a dripping wet cave as the snow storm blew harshly outside. The wolf put its fluffy white tipped tail over the girl and placed its head on top of hers and eyed her wearily, ignoring the glare she was receiving from her wolf pack. Her pack had told her of the danger taking a human in and taking care of it, but she didn't care that much, this girl wasn't like most humans.

She had a soft, friendly and caring personality that most humans this day and age lacked.

"Usagi," said old wolf with a light silver coat and a thinning tail, "You honestly want to take care of that thing."

He stared at the girl's sleeping form in disgust.

The young female wolf smiled broadly, "Of course I intend to." Then she added, "Besides, I need something to occupy myself."

The old wolf nodded and looked over at Usagi's mate, Hyde who was a black colored wolf with white paws and was sitting in a dark corner of the cave casting dark looks at Usagi, "I can understand your distress over losing Kaiyo, but that doesn't mean some human can replace your pup. Right, Hyde?"

Hyde didn't say anything, he just stared at Usagi who was cuddling up with the young human girl.

They wouldn't understand, Usagi thought bitterly closing her eyes, I'm not trying to replace Kaiyo for nothing can replace her.

She sighed and reopened her eyes lazily to see her friend, Kaida a tan colored wolf, sitting next to her, "What?" she asked Kaida.

"You do know what you're doing right?" Kaida asked with concern, "Human's are a lot different from us."

Usagi raised her eyebrows, "Well, I guess she'll just have to learn then, won't she?"

Kaida rolled her eyes in exasperation, "The elders won't approve of this. They won't allow this." She looked over her shoulder a group of three old wolves, laying a few meters away that were casting Usagi dark looks.

"They'll understand, they won't just throw a life away so carelessly," Usagi reasoned, "Even they can comprehend that this child is in need."

Kaida leaned forward and looked at the girl. She had raven colored hair that reached down to her waist, she had pale skin with rosy cheeks and she must have been the most dainty human in all of existence. Her body seemed fragile, like glass, it would probably brake easily. She wore a long white dress that went down to her ankles and black shoes on her small feet.

"She might not survive the winter, she has no fur except what is on her head," Kaida said quietly.

Usagi sighed heavily as the girl unconsciously hugged her tail in her small hands, breathing in and out steadily.

Usagi nudged her gently with her wet padded nose and licked her cheek, "I think she's adorable."

She stared at the girl affectionately.

Kaida snorted, "She's not a pet!-she's a human child!"

"I know," Usagi replied gently.

"Then why do you insist treating her like one," Kaida hissed, "This girl comes from the human world, she cannot be brought up with us."

"Like I said," Usagi said irritably, "She'll just have to learn."

"Learn, right," Kaida huffed going back to her mate, a husky brown wolf named, Daisuke.

She leaned against him and didn't dare look back at Usagi.

The girl shifted restlessly in her sleep and rubbed her eyes, but did not wake.

Usagi watched as the girl shivered a little, but stopped once Usagi wrapped her tail around her.

She thought about all the adjustments the human child would have to make, going from a city to living in the wilderness with wolves that wouldn't accept her.

But this child hadn't been accepted in the human's city either, that's why Usagi had taken her.

This girl had been an outcast in their society and she didn't have any parents that would care if she was gone or not.

She was an orphan.

She didn't come from an underprivileged family though, she was the niece of a noble named Jagara.

Jagara had always hated the girl and allowed the guards to do what they pleased with her. They had often sadistically raped her and beat her, so Usagi had no shame in taking this girl away from the noble's mansion.

She had saved this girl from a life of dread from humans.

Usagi nuzzled the girl's face, "A name, you must have a name," she whispered in a hushed voice, "I can't just keep calling you girl or it."

Usagi heard the wind die down outside and looked up to see the snow had stopped falling, the full moon hung overhead as her pack members ran outside to bathe in it and regain their energy. Usagi remained inside the cave not caring as her pack members began howling in delight and the young pups began wrestling with one another as the older wolves watched on with interest.

"Hmm…" she thought, "You need a proper name, a name should often reflect on one's personality." She deliberated her a few more moments then smiled sweetly, "I think Okami would do, it seems it suit you." The girl turned over and began sucking on her thumb as Usagi held her smile, "That name will do just fine."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okami cried out in pain as sharp fangs sank into her side.
She howled and whimpered as blood spattered onto the ground around her.
"I didn't bite you that hard," A young wolf pup with a mix of silver and black fur barked at her, surprised at her sudden outburst.
Okami held her side and bite her lip to keep herself from screaming out until it began to trickle blood.
The pup then lowered her head, "Sorry Okami, I thought we were just playing."
"We were," Okami said trying her best to ignore the pain in he side, "That just hurt a lot, Hoshiko."
She examined her side and grimaced at the sight of her own blood. She had been wrestling with her friend Hoshiko in the forest while their parents had gone out hunting for food.
The pack had recently split up into three groups, one with the eldest wolves, another with the wolves that wanted nothing to do with her and the last was her and Usagi's friend, Kaida and their mates.
Hoshiko's brother, Yuichiro, emerged from behind an overgrown bush wandering what had happened.
"I heard somebody howl." He stated, then she noticed all the blood from Okami's wound.
He walked over to her and tilted his head, "That looks pretty deep and painful."
"Thanks for stating the obvious," Okami hissed.
He leaned forward and started licking the blood away gingerly as Hoshiko continued uttering apologies to Okami.
"It's alright," Okami persisted after Hoshiko had apologized for the thousandth time, "I'm fine, I'll live."
"You should be more careful," Yuichiro said withdrawing, "I thought Usagi told you not to wrestle with Hoshiko anymore."
"She did, but do you honestly expect me to just sit by and let you two have all the fun." Okami argued still clutching her side.
"Usagi's not going to like this when she comes back with mother and father," Hoshiko whined, "She had a good row at us last time and I don't like being yelled at."
"It's not your fault," Yuichiro said, "It's hers because she shouldn't have been playing with you in the first place."
"Was not!" Okami said stamping her foot.
"Was too!" Yuichiro said.
"Was not!"
"Was too!"
"Was not!"
"Was too!"
"Was not!"
"Was too!"
"Was not!"
"Was too!"
~~~~~~~~~ hour later ~~~~~~~~~

"Was so not!"

"Was too!"

"What is all the yelling about?" Usagi said walking in on the scene with Kaida and Hyde close behind herself.

She then noticed the mark in Okami's said, "Okami!" She snarled. "What the hell happened to?"

Okami hunched her shoulder's forward and sniffled, "I uh…got bitten."

Usagi glowered at her, "How many times must I tell you not wrestle? Do you even listen to me Okami?"

"I do listen," Okami muttered. I just don't like to do what you tell me to, she thought bitterly. It wasn't fair that she wasn't allowed to wrestle just because she was a human and not a wolf. Over the time she had lived with the wolves, she had to make numerous adjustments to their lifestyles: eating raw meat, hunting, going used to cold conditions since she had no fur, etc.

Kaida, sensing that Usagi wanted to talk to Okami alone, ushered Yuichiro, Hoshiko and her mate to the dinner of dead rabbits they had just caught.

When Usagi knew they were far enough away that she could talk freely, she shook her head, "You're not a wolf Okami."

Okami sulked angrily, "I know."

"That means there are certain things you cannot do that Hoshiko and Yuichiro can." Usagi continued.

"I know." Okami repeated feeling very disheartened. It wasn't fair one bit.

"Okami!" Usagi snapped noticing that the girl was staring blankly at her and obviously not listening.

"I know," Okami said then realizing that Usagi was glaring furiously at her, "Sorry."

Usagi softened her voice, "Okami…what am I doing to do with you?"

Okami ran her thin fingers through her dirty jet black hair and shrugged, "Maybe you should have left me with my aunt." The pain in her side had subsided, bringing back her cocky attitude.

"That's not funny!" Usagi growled venomously like a snake, "You know how horrible and wretched your aunt was to you."

Okami narrowed her eyes, "Yeah, I remember clearly, crystal clear." She had been trying to push those memories out of her head for three years and now Usagi had just made her recall them. The pain in her past, although she had been so young, she remembered how depressed she had been, how hopeless escaping it all seemed. But Usagi saved her, Usagi had killed a guard that was trying to have his way with her. Blood had splattered all over the walls when Usagi's had sunk her fangs into the man's neck and she then recollected that Usagi had offered to take her away from it and that she had agreed. Anything was better then living in that hell hole.

She was nine now, but she hadn't grown much. She still had black hair and brown eyes, still had a delicate looking figure and she still gave off that weak appearing image too. But she was quite a bit stronger then she appeared.

"You can't shelter these things from me forever," she muttered under her breath. Sooner or later, Usagi was going to have to let her grow up.

"That is true," Usagi responded, "I can't help it though, if you were a wolf you'd already be grown up ,but you are a human, a very young human child who still needs someone to have what's in your best interest at mind."

Okami cringed a little at the thought of being treated like a small child for a few more years, "I wish I was a wolf."

Usagi chuckled," You should be happy with whatever you are."

"Easy for you to say," Okami mumbled, "The pack didn't split p because of you."

Usagi stopped chuckling then frowned, "That isn't important, now let's hurry before Kaida and her pups eat everything and then we'll a look at your injury." Usagi turned around and headed in the direction Kaida and her family went in.

Okami dwelled a few more minutes in her self pity then followed Usagi.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All that was left of Okami's wound was a visible scar were the remnants of four years ago. Usagi, Kaida and Hyde had passed away due to the fact they were all pretty old for wolves, leaving Okami with Hoshiko and Yuichiro. There time together was short though because Hoshiko had gotten shot by an old man with his dog and Yuichiro had run off and Okami never heard from him again.
She was all alone now at the age of thirteen, still a vulnerable child and now a teenager, but with the instincts and reflexes of a wolf: her hunting skills had improved, her smelling and even hearing.
Due to these skills, she didn't fit in with the humans or the wolves. True, she was a human, but she had been raised by wolves which made her feel awkward and alienated around her own kind.
She preferred to stay away from people so she lived by herself in the wilderness hunting small animals that were easy to catch, the winters were still hell though, but she preferred sleeping in a cave during a snow storm then sleeping in a rundown building.
She didn't trust humans either, having only known the humans within her aunt's realm who gave her nothing but suffering, she didn't try to befriend them.
It was a bad feeling, not belonging anywhere.
Whenever she slept, she often dreamt of being back with Usagi and Hoshiko and Yuichiro and all the others hunting, wrestling and telling stories to one another, but it was never to be again.
She was alone and it was something she would have to cope with.
She loved the feeling of the mountain wind whipping through her air, the sweet aroma of flowers that filled the air and the sounds of the birds chirping in their melodic symphony though. That's why she stayed in the wilderness. But after a while, she felt something in her heart tugging at her insides. Trying to pull her in a certain direction. It called inside of her at night, telling her to search for whatever it was. It called inside of her during the day as she hunted for food, it wasn't a calling she could brush off no matter how hard she tried. A voice that repeated over and over inside of herself, search for paradise.
-------------------------------------------------------- < p>Authoress: Hooray! Done with the prologue! Should I continue? I just thought it would be a cool idea to have a girl that was raised by wolves part of her life as a character an yeah…I hope you enjoyed the prologue!
