Give a Reason sung by Hayashibara Megumi (translated in English)
*****
The crowd of this fast-moving age is
running through the city, which is a savanna
Surrealist news is happening alternately,
and when tomorrow comes, everybody forgets them
*****
I'm alive, I'm living now.
Seeking something inside of this life
While I wriggle myself and slip out,
I'm trying to test how strong I am
*****
There's an "answer" somewhere for sure
The answer for why we were born
Everyone is seeking for that, going
towards helpless dreams he can't set free
*****
Give a reason for life
I'm not afraid of getting hurt!
But I'm not strong any way for that
Simply, by keeping doing anything,
I don't wanna be regretting myself!
Here we go! go! I'll keep running
I won't be stopped by anybody!
I wanna get along... Give a reason
for life ...to the me of the future
*****
Even if an immeasurable big darkness
comes towards me making a dreadful noise,
When tomorrow comes, after I see someone,
the despair in my heart will be erased
*****
Doing a stronger image of myself,
I find myself smiling...
I believe in my feelings, it moves me toward
my dreams more than anything else, anybody else
*****
I won't be leaning on my goal
even when I find my way to it
Because surely a new dream
will push my back again!
Here we go! go! I'll keep running
I won't be stopped by anybody
I wanna get along... Give a reason for life
...to the me of the future
*****
There's an "answer" somewhere for sure
The answer for why we were born
Everyone is seeking for that, going
towards helpless dreams he can't set free
*****

But I'm not strong any way for that

Chapter 1: Betrayal's Bloodshed
Her raven colored shoulder length hair was pulled back into a tight, messy bun and pushed her light blue bangs behind her ears which were adorned in earrings. On her lower lobes of each ear was a dangling crescent moon and next to it was a small silver hoop then a silver stud. On her upper right ear were two gold studs and on her left was a tiny golden hoop. She had a small turquoise stud on her left nostril and her belly button was pierced with a plain dark purple ring encrusted with little diamonds. Her tongue was pierced too with an ordinary silver stud.
She wore a white tube top that reveled part of her belly and a black leather jacket over it with sleeves that went to her elbows. She had black fingerless gloves on her hands and lots of rings on her fingers.
On her left shoulder was a tattoo outline in black of a dragon that seemed like it was snaking its way across her back. Of course it was only visible when she wasn't wearing her jacket.
She had on a low-rider, short black denim skirt with a thin black belt covered in tiny circular golden beads in two neat rows and gun holsters on both sides with hand guns occupying each one.
Her feet were attired in black combat boots that went up to her knees with plum colored laces.
To any on looker, she looked like a punk-ass girl who would kick their ass if they bothered her, but to people who were familiar with her, she looked like a bounty hunter with fashion sense and to drunken fools she looked like a good time.
Her slim physique often made people think her frail, but she was no where close to being fragile. She was as though as hunters could come.
Always calculating her surroundings and paying attention to the smallest and biggest details, she knew what was going on around her and that added to her hunter skills.
Her aim with a gun was beyond godly, always hitting her target even at impossible odds and her martial arts were far surpassing of anyone. She was trained with almost every weapon of combat and had more then enough experience with each to have mastered it.
She was light on her feet, a quick thinker and had killer reflexives.
She was not one to be trifled with unless you had a death wish, a very painful one.
Her silver eyes scanned her surroundings carefully, taking in everything from the deadened landscape in the distance to every crack and crevice of the building she was standing on.
Her ears perked up at a familiar shouting voice beneath her and she quickly kneeled , hiding most of her body from view as her eyes peered over the building's edge.
"Where did that bitch go?" A man shouted at his three companions, all holding guns and had knives on their belts.
Her eyes gleamed with ferocity as she looked them over…bounty hunters. She despised them above all else.
"Perhaps we should split up and look for her." a stout man suggested. "We could cover more ground that way."
The leader nodded, "Alright then, everybody spilt up and search. I want that girl alive though, she's worthless dead."
The three other men agreed quietly then split up in separate directions.
She smirked as she watched them start their futile quest to find her.
They were truly idiots, she could easily pick them off one-by-one. If the had any proper experience they should have known that splitting up was the worst decision.
She needed to keep a low profile though, if word got out that she was in this city then bounty hunters would swarm there by the truckload and then she'd spend the entire time hiding.
Perhaps…an evil thought crossed her mind…perhaps she should have a little fun though then skip town.
Without a second thought about it she jumped down from the building and carefully followed the leader of the group.
She was careful to stay in the shadows of the rundown buildings to avoid being seen. She was careful not to step on anything that would make a sound.
He walked down an alleyway as she stayed in the shadows observing him.
She watched as twirled a riffle in his hands and how the metal of the gun caught the sunlight and bounced off of it. He was whistling an annoying tune which would have cause her to kill her if she had lacked patience.
He stopped after a few minutes and turned around as she dodged to another shadow to evade his sight. She had to lean, completely compressed against the wall behind her to stay in darkness.
He started to mutter under his breath in frustration, "Where the hell can she be?"
Now was her cue, "Looking for me?" she asked coolly stepping out from the shadows placing one hand on her hip and letting the other stay at her side loosely.
"Where'd you come from?" He stammered, clearly surprised.
She chuckled darkly, "I've been following you." She paused then eyed his riffle, "Aren't you going to kill me?"
"You're worth nothing dead," he stated.
She smiled and walked over to him and stood in front of him, enjoying the terrified look on his face grow and pale, "That's one mistake you've made." she whispered, "Never say that you're not going to kill who you're after." She walked around him in a circle, looking him over and watching him shake where he stood. She placed her cold hand on his cheek, "You know what I'm capable of and yet you still came after me." She removed her hand.
"Don't tell what mistakes I've made you rogue hunter!" He spat angrily, "I know how to hunt!"
She laughed and folded her arms across her chest, "Another mistake you made…" she recovered from her laughing and took on a more serious face, "Splitting up with your pals."
"How is that a mistake?-you cover more ground that way." He hissed at her holding onto his gun in both hands tightly.
"Why you ask?" She pressed her body up against him which cause him to shift uncomfortably. He was too distracted by the contact of their body to notice her right hand had gripped a dagger on his belt. "I'll tell you why." She whispered into his ear the answer and rose the dagger behind his back, "Because…no one can help you or hear you scream."
He gave her a confused look, but it quickly changed when he felt the blade drive through the middle of his back. Blood dribbled out of his mouth and slowly trickled down his chin as he stared horrified at the young huntress. He then let out a blood-curdling scream as she withdrew the dagger from his back and he fell to the ground and a puddle of blood formed beneath his fallen figure. He was still alive though, but barely.
She knelt down next to him, "You see, no one can save you." She still held the blade then plunged it through his chest then she stood up and pressed it in deeper by stepping on it. "Now be good and die while I take care of your friends bastard." She said with the absent of emotions in her voice as she turned away to track down his companions.
The first one she came upon was by a part of town with a small dirty stream of water running through it that led to the sewers of the city. He was sitting by it casually, sharpening his knife and not taking in any notice of his surroundings.
This is too easy, she thought as she stood behind him and he didn't seem to notice her shadow looming over him until she coughed loudly enough to make him jump.
He stumbled to the ground, but quickly recovered with his knife in his hand, "You!"
"Yes, it is me." She said softly, "Who else would I be?"
"Don't be smart with me bitch," he growled.
He lunged at her, but she easily dodged and stuck a foot out to trip him and he fell to the ground with a loud crash. "Pathetic," she sighed, "Honestly, can't anyone put up a good fight?" She put her foot to his throat, "Any last words before I smash that neck of yours?"
"Y-yes…" he said, struggling to find words.
"Then out with it." she ordered sharply pressing her foot against his neck.
"W-why are you going to k-kill me?" he whimpered, "I-I haven't done anything to you."
She grabbed him by his collar and pulled him up, "Why you ask?" Fire raged in her eyes, anger consumed her, "Because you people are trying to kill me! You're hunting me like I'm some animal!" She pushed him roughly back onto the ground with hatred flaming inside of her, "And I said that I'd kill everyone and anyone that came after me. So tough luck." She took a pistol out of her belt holster and shot him in the head and blood sprayed the surroundings as half of his head was blown to bits.
The stream that was running nearby soon turned into red water as blood seeped into it.
She walked through the city keeping an eye out for the next guy whom she found with his gun resting on his shoulder wandering around looking lost. Her eyes traced him, he was no threat either. So far, not one of these 'hunters' had any skills besides being dumb asses.
She picked up a piece of rubble off the ground and threw it up and caught it then she threw it at his head causing him to get off balance and swagger a bit. He then whirled around looking like he was going to kill whomever had thrown the rock at him, but a sly grin crept across his face when he saw her standing about ten yards behind him. "You're much cuter in person, I must say."
"Don't try flattering me," she said scornfully, "I'll still kill you like your other two friends."
He arched his eyebrow with his thin lips forming a frown, "You really don't have a heart do you?"
"I used to, but it died like everything else in my life," she replied with a twinge of sadness then she refocused on her task. "So how would you like to die?-should I a) shoot you, b) stab you or c) break your neck? You have ten seconds to decide before I make the decision for you."
He charged at her but she kneed him in the stomach then kicked him against the wall. She then proceeded by punching him in the face a few times before hitting him in the stomach once more.
He collapsed to the ground with bruises on his face, lip bleeding, a black eye and clutching his stomach. He supported his weight with one arm and found strength to stand up and he wiped the blood from his bottom lip off with his sleeve, "You'll pay for that."
An amused look came upon her face, "What are you going to do? Bleed on me?" (A/N: I just had to use that XD) she inquired restraining herself from giggling.
He dove at her again, but she caught him and flung him back against the wall, "I'd stop doing that if I were you." She placed him in a head lock and applied pressure and stopped when she heard the desired cracking noise of his neck snapping. She let go and gazed down at his crumpled form, "Extremely pathetic. Three down and one more to go to end this fucking cat and mouse game." But before she could turn around she felt a gun placed against the back of her head, "At least I didn't have to go looking for you." she said quietly.
"I saw their dead bodies," he said furiously, "You kill without remorse, don't you?"
"Of course," she responded flatly, "If I was to be attached to things, I wouldn't be a good hunter now would I?"
"Don't play with me Nemesis," he said.
She had to admit, it took guts to say her name, even if the guts would soon be spilling out of him if he continued to piss her off. "I'll make you a deal." She told him, "You let me go and I won't kill you. How does that sound?"
It seemed like he took the bait to reconsider it which was a distraction to allow her to whirl around and kick him in the face which made him drop his gun to the ground as he went flying back. He stumbled onto his feet, "I thought you were giving me a choice."
"Why would I do that for someone the likes of you?" she asked icily pulling out her hand gun and aimed it at him "But perhaps I will if I like the answers to the questions you give me."
He nodded.
"Why is Jagara putting a bounty on me?" she questioned.
"I don't know all the details, but it has something to do with something that happened in your past." he replied trembling.
Like that helps, she thought bitterly, I can't recall anything until two and a half years ago, "Did she mention anything in specific?"
"Just something about wolves, but that's all I know."
It was clear to her that he wasn't high enough in status to know much information to help her, so she'd just pump him for basic information she was curious about. "Are there many other bounty hunters after me?"
"She put a higher bounty on you then wolves, so yes, I'd figure there are probably a hundred or so."
Great, about a hundred, "Why isn't she coming after me herself?"
"She said she would, but she's busy with other things," he answered looking back and forth at Nemesis and the gun pointed at him scared out of his wits.
"You wouldn't happen to know what other things she's so busy with, would you?"
He shook his head, "She said it was none of our business."
"So, she's still after wolves?"
"Yes, you were her top wolf hunter weren't you?"
Nemesis nodded curtly, "Yes I was. And if you don't mind, I'm asking the questions." she stepped closer to him until she was three feet away from him and her shadow loomed over him , "What does she want from me? Did she mention anything?"
"No." His fear jumped a level and he shut his eyes, "Please don't kill me!"
"Don't worry," she said lowering her gun, "You answered the best you could, but…" she narrowed her eyes at him, "You're a liability to me."
"I won't tell anyone where you are!" he nearly shouted pleadingly.
"I still can't trust you," she said coldly holding her gun back up and pulling the trigger.
Bullet entered through his neck and blood covered the wall behind him as his body sagged with his eyes wide open in fear, lifeless fear.
The blood in her body began boiling as she walked away, she had been Jagara's most loyal hunter and now that noble had turned the tables on her. She was now the hunted, but that was going to change.
She had thought she could have trusted Jagara above every else, they had a business partnership. She hunted the wolves then turned them over to Jagara, but she had been stabbed in the back.
She thought only about killing Jagara with her own hands, but going to the city where the noble lived would swarm every cop and hunter to her and she couldn't afford such a rash mistake.
Nemesis had to live long enough for her revenge, long enough for her vengeance for the betrayal and she would get it one way or another.

De~chan: Yeah, Nemesis…I kind of over-did her description and she is pierced in a lot of places, what can I say?-at least you know exactly what she looks like now. If you want to listen to the 'them song' then go to www.animeaddiction.net and go to anime jukebox and click on the second Slayers song, it rocks! Should I continue? And I'm going to start a self-insertion for all you WR fan girls once this fic is about half done, I'm brainstorming ideas which I will probably put up in the next chapter that you can vote for!
Disclaimer: Face it people, all disclaimers are used for now are to make witty comments and jokes. Alas, I will not follow that cliché. I do not own Wolf's Rain and don't worry, Toboe's safe from Michael Jackson.
