First Meeting

Leara sat at her desk as she stared dreamily out the window as the teacher droned on about the class at hand, physics. To Leara math wasn't her best subject and physics was the worst out of all the math disciplines. The city council that had been ruling the city for the past five years after several corrupt mayors in a row ruled that children had to be educated early in higher math's, and other subjects so they got a job when they got out of school. This is why there was so much crime in the city because the children who didn't want to learn these higher education subjects at that point in time just dropped out of the classes and filled their lives with crime.

The teacher, Miss Smedley, stated “X2 + Y2 = 12, students workout this equation so X is not squared anymore. Give me the answer in five minutes. Leara! Leara! Get to work; I do not want to have to fail you in this course. This is an extremely important course in life young lady.”

Leara immediately snapped out of her day dream and quickly apologized to the teacher who was staring at her with her hands on her hips. A dark shade of red began to appear on Leara's cheeks as she filled with embarrassment and immediately got to work on the problem at hand. Of course she did not get the right answer but the school bell rang before she had to read her answer, saving her from humiliation and signifying that school was out to her fellow classmates. Leara picked up her school books and rushed out of class ready to get back home.

Leara flew down the steps of the school ad down the walkway, happy to get away from such a miserable place. As she walked away from the school she bypassed several other school children were going in the direction she had just come from. Night students most likely! The sun was beginning to set as the schoolgirl continued to make her way home, about twelve city blocks from where she was now.

Along the way Leara stopped at the local convenience store to pick up a few items because it was Friday night. On Friday nights, Leara always made dinner for herself and her father and needed to proceed into the two-storey red brick building if she wanted to get home to make dinner. Leara began to collect the items she needed and as she was doing this, she overheard two older men saying;

First man, `The police think the attack was by a sick man. I know differently, it was a wolf, maybe the same wolf that killed my wife five months ago.'

Second man retorted, `You've got to be crazy! There haven't been wolves anywhere on Earth for nearly 200 years. Read your history books man!'

The first man becoming angry stated, `I'm crazy! My wife was torn to pieces just like those two boys; no human being can do that. I'm telling you it was a wolf, from what I know, they are evil, foul creatures that were treated by our ancestors with fear and suspicion.'

Leara finished with her shopping and said hello to the cashier, a nice old oriental man who owned the store, before paying for the items she had selected. Then she juggled her school books and groceries as she somehow opened the door and was back to continuing on her journey home.

A swift breeze blew down the street Leara was on and sent a shiver down the girl's spine and she immediately looked back to see if anyone was following her. The only thing that was trailing after her was a small brown leaf that floated majestically through the air before landing at her feet. A small giggle went through the young girl and she bent down and carefully picked up the leaf before sticking it in her hair. With a little skip to her step, Leara continued back on her journey home. She began to think about the supper she was going to make her father and with that thought her stomach rumbled loudly which resulted in Leara quickening her pace.

Leara soon came to a stop at the next intersection because the traffic would make it impossible to cross. As she was waiting for the light to change she heard a loud noise coming from the alleyway to her right. Interested, Leara went over and looked into the darkening alleyway. Because she couldn't see well she didn't know what was in the alleyway but was almost certain that it was not human, and if it was human it was probably one of the bad people her father use to talk about.

To dispel any fears that it was a human being, Leara heard a low menacing growl come from the creature and she began to realize that it was a dog. However, being a bit afraid of dogs, especially big ones, she did not dare step any deeper into the alleyway fearing the dog would attack her. Instead, believing it was someone's missing dog she called to it and offered it one of the sausages that she had in her grocery bag.

Leara cooed, `Come here boy! Come here! If you come here I will give you this nice delicious, plump sausage. Please come out boy, I'm not going to hurt you, your owner is probably worried sick about you.'

With that last comment the `dog' moved slowly forward but stopped just about ten or twelve steps from where the girl was. The `dog' sat down and watched the human girl intently prepared to act if she did anything. What the human girl was unaware at the moment was that this was the wolf that had eaten the two children the night before. He would surely be happy to snack on her, or just as happy eating the juicy sausage the girl held in her hand.

Leara then tossed the sausage into the alleyway and she could see the dog go for it. The girl then got back to her feet and crossed the street and continued on her way home. She was unaware of the two yellow eyes following her every moment until she was out of sight before it returned its attention to the sausage.

It was way later than usual when the girl tiredly opened the door to see her dad standing there with his arms crossed over his chest. The girl put down her books and groceries before straightening painfully, and managed a weak smile. Her father immediately uncrossed his arms and looked at his daughter with concern and sympathy.

He said, `I guess you had a long day sweety. Do not worry about dinner I will make it for a change and then we will talk about this little problem.'

Leara questioned, `What problem, dad? I can make dinner, also, I usually do, I'm not to tired.'

Leara's dad frowned and Leara knew to be quiet because this is when she knew he wouldn't put up with anything she nodded and headed into the living room and sat down on the small rocking chair her grandma had donated to them before Leara's mother died.

Leara looked out the window as she her father crash around in the kitchen and begin to curse. She sighed inwardly and wondered why, for like the millionth time, her mom died. Since her mother had been gone her father hadn't been the same. Usually he would not shave for days or cut his hair, and sometimes he would go for periods of time without going to work. In the past two years alone, he had been to five or six jobs, she had lost count by now.

Her father sat himself down across from her as she was in the middle of her thoughts. He cleared his throat which resulted in her to turn her attention to him. He then proceeded to speak slowly and clearly, because he didn't want to get her angry as he spoke about what was on his mind.

He said, `Leara, I know you are falling behind your fellow classmates in math, and your teachers say that it is close to you being expelled. Are you having any problems, hunny? Is it boys?

Leara said, `Dad do not worry about me in math, I'll try harder. Don't worry about boys either, because, its hard enough completing these silly math classes without attracting a boy on the side. Besides it would make my life even more complicated.'

Her father responded, `I know you don't like math courses and if you were in school several years ago, you would be doing what you want. However, the city council is in charge and you have to abide by the rules.'

Leara replied angrily, `I don't want to follow their stupid rules, they closed down the history courses just last month. That was the only thing I would suspect people would enjoy. If we don't know our history, what will we become, dad! Dad are you even listening to what I am saying! Urge!'

Her dad replied mildly, `Leara, hunny, I know you liked history, especially animal history but the city council makes the rules. You're a good girl, Leara, just please try harder in math. Now go eat your dinner before it goes cold.'

As the human girl and her father sat down to dinner two yellow eyes stared at them from the window. The eyes soon disappeared as the creature behind them took off into the night. No one noticed it as it ran down the street because basically there was no life on the street this night. The wolf fumed because he wanted to hunt again tonight like he did the night before.

The wolf then heard a banging sound from a dark alleyway. Interested he jaunted into the alleyway hoping it was a homeless bum or a drug addict, because it was fun to rip their throat out as they stared at him with `doopy' eyes. A blur caught his eye and immediately the wolf got into a defensive position. Whatever was in this alleyway was quick and probably not human.

Toboe, the wolf, began to wonder if it was another wolf. Couldn't be, he would have smelt it earlier because he had criss crossed the whole city. As he was thinking the blur crossed in front of his field of vision and stopped abruptly.

He growled as he could now see that it was another wolf. It had white fur, was bigger than him almost twice as big, and had crystal blue eyes. Toboe froze and watched, as the fellow wolf put on its `human image'. This indicated that the fellow wolf did not consider Toboe a threat and Toboe looked closely at the human image. The man before him was tall, maybe 6' or 6' 1” and had blue eyes and white hair. In human years he was about in his mid-twenties to early-thirties and with the leather gear he wore, to most humans he would look like a biker.

The man turned his back to the brown furred wolf and began to walk away from him down the alley. Toboe immediately put on his image of the reporter from earlier and followed the other man. A little way down the alleyway the man opened a side door to a dilapidated building and held the door open until Toboe arrived and went in to. In this run down building, there was a mattress in the room that Toboe stepped into and opposite it was a small T.V. Both creatures sat down to have a long talk. Toboe really wanted to get to the bottom of why another wolf was in his city, and maybe, just maybe they could join up to hunt the humans at night, because with two wolves it was way easier than one. The `biker' man opened his mouth to speak and . . .
