Prologue of The Moon's Tears: Little Sister's Locket
The ran fell down heavily and pitter pattered on the streets as two children stood in an alleyway, a young girl and a boy.
"You aren't going to leave are you big brother?" The young girl who appeared to be no older than five-years-old with long amber hair and reddish eyes asked tugging at her brother's sleeve. Her eyes quivered as he knelt down and hugged her which puzzled her, "What are you doing?" she questioned furrowing her brows.
He pulled back and smiled, a sad smile, "I'm afraid we won't be seeing each other for a while kiddo." She didn't understand what was going on, so was too young even to comprehend the thought that they might not even see each other again. He hugged her again, "Everything will be fine though Khota." he whispered gently into her ear, "You'll be fine."
"What about you?" she asked, "Will you be fine?" She pushed her older brother back a little bit and stared at him.
He caressed her check with his hand, "Of course." It was lie, but he preferred to lie than tell her the bitter truth.
"Promise me you will." Khota demanded, small globules of tears formed at the edges of her eyes. The unusually soft tone of her brother's voice worried her.
He patted her on the head and stood up, "Promise." It was another lie ,but he had to have her believe in something. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a necklace and placed it into her and, "See you later Khota." He shoved his hands into his sweatshirt pockets and turned around to walk away without looking back at her.
Khota watched him walk away while a tear rolled down her cheek, she held the charm bracelet in her hand and looked at it. It was made of a thin silver chain with a locket in the shape of a thumb nail sized heart and when she opened it, a hardly legible message was engraved in it. She read it quietly to herself, "I'll always love you, from your brother, Hige." She wiped her tears away with her hands than fastened the locket around her neck. For a few minutes she let her small fingers trace the silver chain as she thought of her brother. "Why are leaving me Hige?" she muttered to herself as she headed out of the alleyway with her fingers still wrapped around her locket.
The rain was coming down heavier than ever and she quickly put her jacket's hood over her head and folded her arms.
Some people brushed past her as she walked and they gazed at her oddly as they did so, to them she appeared in the form of a small dark khaki wolf with chocolate brown eyes with a tail hung low and its ears drooping slightly. Her necklace swayed as with very step she took.
When she reached the outskirts of the city she looked over her shoulder for one final look. The tall grayish buildings that were crumpling in some areas seemed more unwelcoming than ever and she couldn't imagine how humans could live in such filth.
"Hige…" she whispered silently, "We will see each other again my dear brother." stopped for a few uneasy minutes and gritted her teeth, keeping herself from crying hysterically.
The dark clouds thundered over head making her jump a little and she decided she better get heading into the mountains before the storm worsened.
She looked over to the mountains which were her destination and sighed heavily. She wished her mother and father were still alive, they wouldn't let Hige abandon her like this, but they had been killed a while ago and Hige was all she had left. Now though, she wasn't sure if she'd have Hige anymore. She'd be alone, without anyone.
As she neared the mountains the once violent storm with its howling wind had almost stopped. She looked up into the sky that was now dark due to the sun have setting and she focused her eyes on the full moon. There were no clouds in the sky so she wondered why could it still be raining. She cocked her head and in her naiveté she concluded that the moon was crying.
Khota closed her eyes and frowned as she remembered her mother once telling her that when the saddest days come to pass, the moon would shed tears.
