Chapter Thirty Two: Dry Fruit Loops
Todd woke up with a knee in his back.
Ouch. Somehow Wanda always managed to do that when he slept next to her. He wondered how Lance managed to avoid losing a kidney or something. Where was Lance? Oh yeah. The party…John…
Did they really do that? Did he really fuck John? Christ. He sat up and rubbed his hands through his hair. It was itchy with dried sweat. Wanda had kicked the guy out, hadn’t she? Wonder where he wound up?
Maybe he went too far…Hadn’t expected it to go quite that far. Not sure he really wanted it to go that far, but too late now. That dude was a freak, yo!
Wanda…Sleeping like an angel. Did she ever think maybe she shouldn’t do the stuff she does? She sure was in a mood last night. Almost jumped Gambit, almost jumped Fuzz-butt…did jump John. Don’t think Wanda ever felt guilty about any of it. Maybe he should have stopped it. But, Lance seemed O.K. with it.
Riss…Was she going to be mad? That’s what he wanted right? To make her mad?
Just a little…Not too much.
“Hey! Wanda babe…You awake?”
“No…mmm...sleeping.”
R 20;Never mind, go back to sleep.”
Go find Riss. Make sure she’s not too upset. Not good for the baby. Make sure she eats something, too.
Get dressed, yo. Where’s your pants? Dude…You really oughtta remember where you leave your pants. There they are.
Step out in the hallway. Nobody here. Check in my room…Somebody used the bed…Oh yeah, Wanda gave him your key.
Lance’s room maybe? No…He’s still asleep and no Riss. Maybe she’s downstairs?
Something goes skittering across the floor. Kicked it by accident. What is it?
A knife? Crap. Switchblade. What’s it doing here? Only person he knew carried one was Riss and she wouldn’t just leave it here.
Someone’s in the bathroom. Knock on the door.
“Wait your turn!” A man’s voice, John’s. No one else here with that accent.
Stand in the hall fiddling with the thing. Something isn’t right, yo.
Bathroom door opens. It’s John wearing nothing but a towel and a smirk.
“G’day. Miss me already?”
“Hey John. You seen Riss?” The man’s eyes narrowed as he took in the switchblade.
“Not since she tried to kill me, no.”
“She did what?” Todd nearly dropped the switchblade.
“Tried to stick me with that itty bitty knife…Might want to watch yourself. I think she’s just a little…hormonal this morning.” John grimaced.
“What did you do to her?” Todd scowled. That didn’t sound like his Riss.
“I don’t know…She said something about me screwing a girl in her bed.”
“That’s my bed, too.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Did you?”
“Wanda did tell me to go find somebody to play with.” John smirked again.
“Where is Riss now?” Todd was starting to understand why someone might want to kill John.
“Last time I saw her she was with Remy.”
“Where is he?”
“Probably with that skunk-haired girl.”
“Rogue.”
“Yeah. That one.”
“Where is she?” Todd ground his teeth in frustration. Yeah. Gonna kill the fucker myself if he doesn’t quit.
“Umm….” John made a show of thinking. “I think…right there. Door number three. Makes sense. Three people…Door number three.” Then he giggled. Christ. He giggled.
“Yeah…Whatever, yo.” Todd turned around and headed for the door. Riss was right, the guy was a lunatic.
He knocked on the door and heard some commotion. Someone was unlocking the door and it opened.
Good. The right room. At least I think it’s good. Gambit…Remy stood looking at him with those fucked up eyes and Rogue and Riss were sitting on the bed. Riss did not look happy to see him.
“I uh…was looking for Riss.” He toyed with the knife awkwardly. “Can I come in?”
“Come in, homme. We jus’ talkin’.”
He walked in and Remy shut the door behind him.
“What’s up with this, yo?” He held up the switchblade. “You really try to stick John?”
“I…um…yeah. Lost my temper. He’s a dick.”
“So you were gonna kill him? What the fuck?”
“I don’t know, Todd…What the fuck were you and Wanda doing last night?”
“We were just playing…”
“John’s a fucking psycho…That’s not just playing. And it was supposed to be us.” She pointed at him and herself. “Not Wanda.”
“You don’t even like the dude…So why do you want to play with him?”
“Because…John is a fucking psycho…How many times do I have to say it? Not safe. Burning things. Ouch. Get the picture? Not to mention throwing Wanda in the mix?”
“And what were you gonna do? Save me?”
Remy and Rogue were looking very uncomfortable. Rogue opened her mouth to speak but Remy shook his head.
“Yeah. Maybe. I’ve kicked his ass before. All I gotta do is take that lighter away.”
“So my pregnant, non-powered, non-mutant girlfriend is supposed to save me from the big bad pyromaniac?” Todd hopped forward until he stood over her and scowled.
“O…Kay…That sounds bad.” Rogue covered her mouth with one hand and was turning red in an effort not to laugh.
“How about this…Maybe…If I’m going to go play with the big bad pyromaniac, maybe I should bring the non-pregnant, powerful, mutant girlfriend instead? Not the pregnant one?”
“I…um…Thought you did it to make me jealous. I know John did.” Marissa was blushing now.
“I did. I just made that other shit up, yo. You gonna try to kill me, too?”
“No. Of course not.”
“But I made you jealous?”
“Yes. Jackass. Can I have my knife back?” She held out her hand for it.
“Ummm…No. Not until John leaves. Actually…Maybe you should keep it.” He handed the switchblade to Rogue instead. “Because I’m seriously thinking of sticking the asshole myself.”
“Dat probably for de best. It a wonder he live dis long.”
“You had breakfast yet?”
“No…I was too busy puking my guts out and trying to kill our houseguests.”
“That’s what I thought. Come on…Gotta feed that tadpole, yo!” Todd grabbed her hand and yanked her off the bed.
Breakfast was dry Fruit Loops, half a can of diced pineapple and some more saltines. The overnighters had completely decimated the kitchen. Thankfully some of them had already cleared out.
She and Todd wound up sharing the kitchen table with Kurt and Kitty. It looked like they had stayed the night after all. Kurt was in high spirits and Kitty seemed more mellow than she had last night.
Good. At least that part of the evening went according to plan.
“Who drank all the milk, yo?” Todd was digging in the fridge. “Who ever heard of eating dry Fruit Loops?”
“It’s all right, Todd. I already had a glass earlier.”
“Well, this sucks…” He pulled out a carton of orange juice and shook it. Empty. He tossed it in the trash.
“Sorry, I didn’t think about getting extra breakfast stuff…”
“But, you got your milk right?”
“Yes…Now sit down, would you? You don’t need milk for toast.” Shut up before you spill the beans…
“How did you guys sleep last night?” Marissa looked across the table at Kurt, hoping to change the subject.
“Good…Very good.” She tried not to watch him eat. Vienna sausages and party mix…Ugh. Kitty was nibbling on leftover pretzels and pretending to read the cereal box.
“That’s good. Hope that little…misunderstanding…didn’t spoil your evening Kitty.”
“No…I’m good. Fine. I had fun.”
“Fine?” Kurt raised an eyebrow at her. “Fun?”
“Bought time you guys got together.” Todd talked around a mouthful of toast and washed it down with warm soda.
“Todd…” Marissa poked him in the ribs with an elbow.
“No. I’m serious…I like to see people happy.” Todd pushed a piece of toast at her and she pushed it back.
“I…um…thought you left with Lance last night.” Kitty was watching them curiously.
“Oh. I did.” Marissa picked at her Fruit Loops.
“So…Like…It’s true? You guys have some sort of thing going?”
“Um…depends on what you mean by ‘thing.’”
“Um…Lance called it a ‘four-way’…And everybody saw you and Wanda…And that guy.”
“You gonna tell us about you and Fuzzy-butt?” Todd leaned forward, pointing at Kurt with a piece of toast.
“Umm…” Kitty blushed and Kurt bared his teeth at Todd.
“It’s complicated…But, yeah…I guess you could say we have a thing.” Dry Fruit Loops suck…
“Your turn.” Todd reached for an open bag of chips only to find it empty. “You and Fuzz…Kurt…did you do it or not?”
“Todd!”
“A gentleman does not kiss and tell.” Kurt pointed one of his sausages at Todd. Marissa shuddered as the smell wafted across the table…Please. No more puking today.
“Yes.”
“Kitty!”
& #8220;What? Were all like, adults, right?” Kitty leaned across the table to whisper. “Did I really feel the house shake at like…2 or 3 in the morning?”
“I don’t know about you…But I did.” O.K. The Fruit Loops were a lost cause. Marissa pushed them away.
“Heh…Thought so.” Todd pushed the Fruit Loops back in front of her. This is getting ridiculous. “So is he any good, yo?”
“Hey, I’m right here!” Kurt stopped eating to glare at Todd. “And that’s none of your damn business. We should go, Kitty.” There was a thumping noise coming from behind his chair. Must be that tail of his.
“He was adequate.” She seemed to be enjoying Kurt’s discomfort.
“Adequate?!?” Kurt was sputtering.
“More than adequate? Above average?” Kurt was staring at her open-mouthed while Todd snickered. “Oh…All right. I’m kidding. He was perfect.”
Marissa eventually got tired of Todd’s attempts to force more food on her. It wasn’t like she was going to starve. She tossed the rest of the cereal in the trash and hinted that maybe Todd should make a grocery run in Lance’s jeep. Then she went downstairs to wake up the stragglers.
Still gotta deal with John. Get all the bystanders out of the house first.
Sorry folks, nothing left but warm soda and dry Fruit Loops. Early bird gets the worm and all that crap. Don’t you guys have classes or Danger Room practice or something? Shoo!
Oops…Caught somebody necking in the linen closet. Out…out…Who iced up the pillow cases?
Turn around to find Angie gathering up blankets and pillows.
“You seen Pietro yet?”
“I think I saw him leaving with that red-head from last night.”
“All right, make sure everybody’s out down here.”
“Gotcha.”
Go back upstairs to check the first floor. Somebody was snoring behind the couch. Nudge him with a foot. Jump back, Ray woke up all grumpy. Don’t want to get zapped.
Just to be sure…check the closets. No one there. Good. Haven’t seen John yet. Where is he anyway?
Back to the kitchen. Something’s cooking…
Fred’s up and not happy about what they’ve done to his kitchen. He was banging cabinets and crumpling up empty cartons, venting. Remy’s there too, joking and scrambling up eggs for himself and Rogue and anyone else that wants any. Never seems out of place…wish he could teach me that one.
“Hey Fred…I already sent Todd on a grocery run.”
“He never remembers the orange juice. Or my Twinkies.” Fred scowled as he found an empty Twinkie box. Someone had raided his stash.
“Sorry. Have you seen John yet?”
“He out back, I tink. Eggs?” Remy flicked a glance at her.
“No thanks.” Her stomach rebelled at the smell.
Wanda and Lance had finally wandered down and she paused to brush her cheek against Wanda’s and give Lance a quick rub on the shoulder before heading out the back door.
No point in putting this off. Hope he doesn’t kill me. Todd will be so pissed.
Shit. Fire people…Never a good sign.
John was standing a dozen feet away from the house watching half a dozen figures of flame dance with one another. Their feet were leaving scorch marks on the grass and Marissa winced.
The figures were familiar…Remy, Rogue, herself, Lance, Todd, Wanda…They were like bits of the sun fallen to earth somehow. She’d never seen them in daylight before. And she could feel the heat from here.
He’s going to kill me. Burned alive. I bet that’s going to hurt.
Talk your way out of this one…I’m sorry I tried to kill you, let’s be best friends forever?
He’s jealous…Of me…Rogue…Remy…All of us…Think…Use it.
No one likes him…Because he’s an ass…Like he’s trying to chase people off…Why?
I’d be happy to be chased off right now. Sooner or later he’s gonna turn around and see me here. Paranoid bastard will think I’m sneaking up to kill him.
“You burn dis one. Remy kill you himself.” Something important in what Remy said, or maybe how he said it…
This one?
He’s burned people before…maybe even his friends.
He’s lonely…desperately lonely…and he’s scared of his own powers. No wonder he’s gone nuts.
Shit. If this doesn’t work, I’m gonna be a crispy critter.
She walked slowly and deliberately around him, giving him plenty of time to see her.
At first he ignored her. He wasn’t giggling this time. And he’d pulled out the flame tanks from his uniform. This was so not good…
Then she walked right up to Remy’s image, feeling the heat sucking the moisture from her skin. She reached for it even though every nerve ending in her hand was screaming at her to pull it back.
“What are you doing?” The image retreated from her. She turned and walked directly toward the image of Rogue and it backed away from her. “Get away from them!”
“Can’t I play too?” Now she pursued Wanda’s image, following the trail of scorched grass.
“They’ll burn you. Get back.” Wanda’s image flickered.
“I thought you wanted to burn me.”
“You…You tried to kill me.” Wanda’s image solidified again.
“Then burn me. You wanted to hurt me, right?” She turned quickly and stepped into Lance’s image. It winked out but left the stench of burnt hair in her nose. Cut that a little close. Hope I don’t have to do that a second time. Definitely not helping the nausea any…
“Stop it!”
“Why? If you’re going to hurt me…I’d rather burn that have you do what you did to me this morning.”
“I didn’t hurt you! I didn’t burn you!” The images wavered and John’s voice rose in denial.
“No. You hurt me John. Really hurt me. And you did it on purpose. Why?”
“I…I was mad at you.”
“Why? What did I do?” Marissa stepped closer to him.
“You…That girl…First you leave…Now I’m losing him too.” The images faded out around her.
“Oh…You didn’t expect to get a happily ever after with Remy did you?”
“No…”
“You never really wanted me for me, John. You just wanted a way to be close to him, didn’t you?” Now Marissa was just inches away from him, studying his face.
“I don’t want to talk about that.”
“I think we should. You used me John. I’ve tried to be your friend. I really have. But, you are making it almost impossible.”
“How could you do that to me? Fix him up with that skunk-haired bitch?”
“Do you think it’s easy for me to see them together, John? Do you think it was easy for me to let you in?”
“You love that Toad-boy.”
“Doesn’t change how I feel about Remy. But, he’s not for me…And he’s not for you.”
“He doesn’t care about me...He picked you over me.”
“He stopped you from making a mistake. Both of us, actually. I don’t really want to kill you.”
“You should stay away. I still might kill you.” He sounded more frightened than threatening now.
“Then do it. Burn me, John. I’m right here.” She held her hands out to her sides, palms up and empty.
“I…”
“You want to punish me…Do it. But, don’t involve my family. You used me to get to Todd and Wanda.”
“No. Wanda invited herself to the party.”
“Maybe…But, what about Todd?”
“You already said it was O.K.”
“If I was there.”
“I don’t think he wanted you there…And the other bloke wanted you. Thought it would be O.K.”
“Bullshit. You’re supposed to be my friend. And you ditched me.”
“I’m not stupid. I know you’ve been using me. Remy too.” His face was red now and even though there were no fire people in sight, it seemed much too warm.
“John…”
“Don’t lie to me…” Yeah. It was getting really warm out here…
“Yeah. I was…At least that’s what I thought I was doing. But, this morning…I don’t do that. I don’t lose it like that. I just don’t.”
“So what?”
“What happened…that was as much Todd and Wanda as anything. What really hurt…What really sent me over the top was what you said to me.”
She tapped a finger in the center of his chest.
“You…Somewhere it stopped being an act…Or else I wouldn’t give a rat’s ass what you said to me.”
“You still made me pay just to touch you. Even talk to you.”
“Did I? Or did you just keep giving me stuff? I don’t really remember asking for much.”
“You were scared of me, then.”
“Maybe the first time…But, then I figured out you were just lonely. As long as I was careful, you weren’t going to hurt me.”
“You should be scared. Everyone else is…even Remy.”
“Careful, yes. Scared, no.” Marissa reached up and tapped his forehead. “You do know there’s something not quite right in there?”
“Yeah. I know.” He was frowning now. “Think I did something that freaked them out last night. But, I don’t know what I did.”
“What happened?”
“Your Toad-boy sucked me off…That was real good. Then I returned the favor. Then I wanted him to fuck me, but the sheila seemed kinda pissed off. So I did her.”
“Yeah…That would do it, at least for Wanda. She’s gotta be in control and the center of attention, or there’s going to be trouble.”
“Then after I got him to fuck me, they kicked me out.”
“He did that? Todd doesn’t do that…”
“That’s what he said. He wasn’t gonna, but Wanda said she wanted to see it.”
“That was it?”
“They were talking kinda dirty to me…both of them. I really got off on it.” He shrugged. “Then Wanda gives me the key to your room and tells me to go play with someone else.”
“I’m not sure it’s something you did then…Except maybe coming on too strong with Todd. Wanda can be possessive. Though it’s usually Lance…”
“So…You’re not mad at me anymore.”
“No.”
“Are they mad at me?”
“Wanda…No. And don’t make her mad. She’d eat you for lunch. But, Todd is…or at least he was.”
“Oh.” He started pulling off the flame canisters. “I was kind of a dick this morning.”
“Are we good, now? Friends?”
“No worries. We’re mates.”
“Then please pack those things away somewhere…They make me nervous.”
“Don’t really need them, you know.” He extended one hand and a ball of flame bloomed. “It’s just easier that way.” He closed his hand and it vanished.
“Oh…” Oh shit! How many times had she thought she was safe when his lighter was out of reach?
“But, I’ll go ahead and put them away. If it makes you feel better.”
“And no more fire people, O.K.?”
“O.K.” He shrugged. “Any chance you and your boy still want to play?”
“John…”
“That’ s what I thought. Bet Remy’s gonna cut me off, too.”
“You’d have to ask him. I wouldn’t know.”
“Right…And you two is thick as thieves.” He scowled at her.
“Really. But, a piece of advice…If you’re going to get all jealous and possessive, he’ll drop you like a hot stone.”
“Maybe I oughtta give that Jubilee girl a call, then.”
“Maybe you should…But, be careful, all right. She’s one of them.”
“Yeah…” He was still fiddling with the canisters, not really doing anything. He was probably avoiding going back inside.
“Do you even like girls, John?”
“Oh yeah. Jubes was fun. I like boys too…maybe better. I don’t know.”
“You really need some help…Not like what Magneto calls helping. Real help. Like maybe the Institute could help you. After all this is over.”
“Nothing wrong with liking boys…”
“Not with that. You know what I mean.”
“This isn’t ever going to be over. Been with Maggie for years now. Always talking about some war that never comes. About how I’m gonna burn so bloody big…Actually, he doesn’t talk about it so much anymore.”
“You don’t really want that do you, John?”
“Sometimes…”
“Real people die when they burn.”
“I know.” John stopped what he was doing and stared at her for a moment. “I’m not going to burn you…or Remy…or that skunk-haired bitch.”
“John…That ‘skunk-haired bitch’ is actually a pretty nice girl.”
“Still don’t like her.”
“She’s one of Jubilee’s friends…”
“Jubilee wasn’t that much fun…”
“Suit yourself…I’m going inside.” Marissa turned to leave.
“Hey! You really gonna have Toad-boy’s kid?”
“Yeah…Been puking my guts out every morning for the last week.”
“Thought you looked like you put on a little weight.”
“Argh!”
“I mean, up top. Sure you won’t let me play with them?”
“Jesus, John! I’m going to be somebody’s mother…Time to take it down a couple of notches, don’t you think?”
“Still, looks good on you. You’re too skinny. You should eat more.”
“Oh God…Not you too!”
