Chapter 2

 

“Where is he?”

 

Yuuko was wearing her serious look, the one that felt like she could see inside his very soul. “You're seeing through your shared eye. What do you see?”

 

“Mist. Fog. Where is he? I can feel him. HE NEEDS ME.”

 

She shook her head. “You'll be too much at risk. You're too vulnerable to this particular demon. I'm afraid there's nothing you can do.”

 

“Then why aren't YOU doing anything? Why aren't you even TRYING to save him?” Doumeki knew it was never a smart thing to rile a witch, but right now, he didn't much care. The terror, the upset that Watanuki was feeling was like ice in his gut, heavy and cold.

 

She spun, her eyes piercing them with fierceness. “Do not presume. I told him to go with you to the temple. And I had to pay to be able to give him that advice. I cannot control that he ignored my warning. It's hitsuzen.” Her eyes grew sad, and she shook her head.

 

`What do I have to pay to get you to send me there?”

 

Frowning, she replied, “Doumeki, this… It will be bad.”

 

Through gritted teeth, he repeated, “How. Much?”

 

She shook her head. “I'll pay. Just remember, demons like this one, those who live on pain and misery, thrive on lies.” Turning from him she continued. “This is all I can do. I can do no more or threaten reality.” Without even looking at him, she waved the tengu fan over her shoulder at him, and he was carried away.
