Chapter 10
By Sapadu
Hiya! I'm back!
"Ken, has it become your hobby to complain about starting school?" Luke Skywalker questioned, while simultaneously half dragging, half pushing Ken towards the school building. Ken was doing his damnedest NOT to go to school, digging in his heels into the sidewalk and grabbing onto anything that came within convenient reach. However, Luke's use of the Force quite effectively did away with most of the resistance.
"It's not SCHOOL that I have a problem with- it's that I don't understand what anyone's saying or what anything reads! I mean, this language doesn't even use LETTERS!" Ken protested, finding a good handhold on a chain link fence. Luke promptly pulled him off.
"I'll have you know that Japanese is a good deal easier to learn than basic. For one thing, everything is pronounced in just one way." Luke insisted, continuing on their route towards the building.
"Oh, sure, that's all well and good for YOU: you actually understand what these people are talking about." Ken retorted, drawing the attention of a few of his soon-to-be classmates, all of whom stopped to stare.
"Would you like your mother to walk you to school from now on?" Luke finally asked, dealing out his trump card. Ken glared and then looked at his shoes.
"No..." He muttered, and Luke smiled with triumph. Meanwhile, the other school-goers continued to stare at the couple. Some were staring because they could SWEAR they were seeing a movie star on campus. Others were staring from shock that a twelve-year-old was going to be attending school with them. Most, however, were wondering if Ken was a girl or a boy. It was quite easy to be confused, especially since Ken was wearing a slightly altered version of the girl's uniform.
It was this fact that also gained Ken immediate approval of the local stalker!girls. A group of them burst into squeals and came rushing at the two Jedi standing at the gates. Ken's head whipped around and his eyes grew wide as he saw the girls who were now charging at him.
WHAM! A split second before one of the girls would have hit Ken, he jumped, climbing to the top of the highest thing off the ground he could reach. In this case, Luke's head.
"Ken, please come down." Luke said, calmly.
"Are they gone?" Ken whimpered, clinging to Luke's hair with desperation.

At Kaibara High, Samantha was rushing to each of her teachers to turn in her make-up work because she had missed school the day before. Momiji was on her heels, asking her a bazillion and one questions about 'all those people at Baku's house yesterday'. Sammy was just barely getting breath with all her running around and thus could barely find any breath to answer Momiji's questions.
"Ah...hah... Mom... iji... kun... would you... like... to come... with me.... this... this... after... noon?" Sammy panted, leaning against the wall for support. Momiji blinked, rabbit ears popping out the top of his head, and a bit question mark appearing with them.
"I'm going to go meet Motou-kun and the others to make sure they're okay... from yesterday..." Samantha explained, just as Hatsuharu walked up.
"Mind if I come too? I want to make sure Momiji doesn't hug another girl." He asked, completely monotone. It amazed Samantha how straight he could keep his face.
"I would have thought Tea-chan would have dealt with it better than she did... I mean, she takes things pretty well in stride, and she's already been through a good deal of confusing, magic stuff, so I wonder what went wrong..." Sammy mused, tapping her finger against her chin, all energy regained.
"Perhaps the fact that you had just told everyone that you were dead, as well as Tsuzuki-san and Kurosaki-san, and were wearing an outfit from Ayame-san's store, AND a good deal of other little things that possibly could have made... say... Hatori-san scream?" Hatsuharu offered, still with a straight face, "Speaking of Hatori-san, he was over at Sensei's and when Tohru, Momiji, and I got back, they both said they had heard the scream from Sensei's house." Samantha's eyes went wide and Haru was almost alarmed at how similar she looked to Tohru when she was panicking.
"Oh my! I didn't realize it would cause such a riot..." Sammy mumbled, her hair going gray.

The bell rang and the sounds of feet beating the pavement as students ran from the building could be heard everywhere. Yugi changed his shoes from the brown loafers they wore in school to his white tennis shoes before he met with Joey, Tristan, and Tea at the school doors. The four of them walked out across the school grounds towards the gates- Joey had an interesting story about a new kid in his first class who apparently didn't speak a word of Japanese, wore the girls uniform with a longer skirt and no bow on the front of his jacket, and yet seemed to have a severe phobia of girls.
"Oi! Minna-san!" A girl dressed completely in blue came hurtling at them, followed by Sohma Momiji and Sohma Hatsuharu. Samantha had ended up crashing into Tristan and pinned him to the ground, so first Tristan had to stand up again before anyone could inspect the damage.
"Sorry, everyone, but I just wanted to make sure everything was okay after what happened at Bakura-san's house yesterday." Samantha explained, ignoring that Tea had gone rather stiff at the sight of Momiji.
"No, it's okay. We're kind of used to weird stuff like that happening..." Yugi reassured her, scratching the back of his head. Samantha grinned and fell into step along side the tiny duelist as Hatsuharu somehow or another got into conversation with Tea without either of them saying very much.
"Motou-kun, you are going to have SO much fun when you turn 21 and want to go drinking." Sammy said, smiling and when Yugi looked rather puzzled (get it? Puzzled?) at that, she explained, "Sure, you're going to get carded every time you go in, but once people find out you're 21, every girl is going to buy you drinks because you're so damned cute and tiny."
Tea opened her mouth to protest the idea of Yugi getting drinks from another woman, but they were interrupted by one of the nastier school hall monitors blasting past her, looking like he was running from an angry lion.
"And STAY AWAY! Stupid asshole... take MY purse, will you?" Muttered the woman who'd driven him away. She was quite young, short brown hair and her bangs falling over one of her eyes and a face mask covering her mouth and nose. She wore a long, navy blue skirt, and a black and white striped sleeveless shirt, which showed several blackened runes tattooed onto her arms. The eye that wasn't hidden by her hair was silvery gray, and Yugi could just barely see a red-rimmed yellow iris behind the curtain of bangs on the other eye.
The woman stopped to blink at Samantha, who also stopped to blink at her.
"Sammy!" The woman finally cried, raising her arms to grab Samantha in a hug.
"Kenda!" Samantha replied, latching onto Kendalina with extremely great velocity.
Everyone else blinked at the two, practically identical women who apparently knew each other. Samantha had Kendalina in a big hug while the taller woman had picked Sammy off the ground and was spinning her around. Both of them were laughing so hard their sides might have split.
"So when did you get in?" Samantha asked when Kendalina set her on her feet again. Kendalina grinned.
"Just about a week ago. I didn't know you were here! What bureau are you working for? Local?" Kenda asked while Sammy nodded, "That's where I'm working now!"
"What, did the Jedi Council think they needed to send a missionary to Earth or something?" Sammy asked with a coy smile. Kendalina glared.
"Sammy, don't get me started on the Council. Besides, you KNOW they broke up when Mr. Darth Ugly, High, and Mighty went on his massacre." She argued. Sammy started to laugh again.
"I know, Kenda, I was just teasing. So, anyhoo, what are you doing here?" She continued, rocking back and forth on her heels.
"I'm actually just here to get away from the Tree. Takuta, being the stupid ass brother of mine that he is has been dumping all of his duties on me. He keeps getting sick and when he does that, the Tree makes ME feed it. Naturally, this is a bit of a problem because... well... you remember what happened to Ken last time I went on one of those stupid assassination missions." Kendalina explained while everyone else except Samantha and Hatsuharu looked appropriately terrified.
"Well, if you're gonna be working in JuOhChou, you're gonna still be killing people. Just don't snap any more necks- when you do that, Ken-chan goes into paralysis shock and we have to get him to a hospital." Samantha informed her, and after Kendalina muttered an obscenity, she continued, "Actually, I meant why are you HERE, as in, right here, right now, at this moment." Kendalina pulled down her mask and grinned.
"Oh, I'm here to pick Ken up from school." She answered. Samantha looked delighted with this statement.
"OOOOH! Ken-chan's here? A whole family affair then, na?" She asked, looking positively enthralled. Kendalina shrugged.
"Farmboy came along too. He walked Ken to school this morning. Oh, and you wouldn't BELIEVE the stories he told me when he got back- how there were these girls who tried to tackle the two of them, so Farmboy had to distract them to give Ken sufficient time to make a beeline for the school office, and apparently Ken had been protesting, quite physically, to being dragged into the school yard." Kenda explained, looking half-amused, but also half like she was going to kill her son as soon as she saw him. Samantha grinned.
"So why didn't Skywalker come to pick Ken-chan up?" She asked, somehow oblivious to the faces the others were making.
"Trike and him went to buy some means of transportation, 'cuz hell if we're going to be WALKING everywhere on this Force-forsaken planet. I told them to get me some kind of speeder bike." Kenda explained with a noncommittal shrug, again. Samantha nodded with a small, wise smile on her face.
"Triclops and Luke Skywalker- car shopping... Waddya wanna bet that the farmboy gets a Ferrari?" Sammy asked, her eyes lighting up. Kendalina scowled.
"He BETTER not- those wimpy four-wheelers are just BEGGING to get totaled on their first test drive. Besides, we've got enough money for a nice car PLUS insurance, but if they get something like that, we aren't going to have any savings from our credits." Kendalina snarled, and Yugi could have sworn he saw her gray eye flash yellow, for just a split second.
"Oh, so you're paying using Republic credits, then?" Samantha confirmed, looking surprised. Kendalina nodded, and by the smug look on her face, apparently a single Republic credit was worth a LOT in Japanese yen.
"What about a convertible? Do you think they'll get one of those? A shiny, elegant, black convertible with farmboy in the front seat... wearing sunglasses... can't you picture that?" Samantha continued, a big smile on her face.
"I can just hear him: 'Is this the FASTEST these things can go? They're so slow!'" Kendalina agreed, also smiling. At this point, Samantha started to laugh hysterically. Meanwhile, Momiji was asking everyone questions and Tea was really the only one answering them, once she could be assured Momiji wouldn't jump at her and suddenly transform the way he had yesterday. Joey and Tristan's jaws were quite firmly planted on the ground. It was about this time that Kendalina noticed them.
"OOOOH! Who's thi-i-is?" She asked, grabbing one of Samantha's hands and waving it at the group, her voice climbing a full octave. Samantha smiled.
"Oh, this is Yu-kun, Jo-kun, Tan-kun, and Tea-chan." Sammy said, pointing to the four, then turning to the two Sohmas, "And that's Sohma Momiji-kun and Sohma Haru-san." Kendalina looked for a while before pointing with her own hand.
"So.... Yugi Motou, Joey Wheeler, Tristan Taylor, Tea Gardner, and the two Sohmas... Right?" She asked, grinning when Tristan picked up his jaw, just to have it drop to the ground again.
"You were doing that just to show off how good you've gotten at mind reading, didn't you?" Sammy asked with a patient smile. Kenda frowned and shook her head.
"Not really. I just wanted to make sure I had it right, and by the horrified looks on their faces, I'd say I guessed pretty accurately." Kendalina explained as everyone assumed a face that was appropriately horrified, yet somehow completely in character for them. For Hatsuharu, this meant raised eyebrows, for Momiji, wide eyes and bunny ears, and for Joey and Tristan... well, if their jaws had been permanently fastened to the ground before, it was NOTHING to now.
"What IS your problem, you two?" Kendalina finally asked. Tristan stammered for a minute before Joey saved him.
"Well... um... ya see... I saw these two guys comin' ta school dis mornin', and I THOUGHT 'at maybe one of them was dis movie star, see? But... I didn't tink he'd actually BE... you know..." Joey stuttered to a halt. Kenda raised an eyebrow.
"Oh! He saw Skywalker dragging Ken-chan to school this morning! Incidentally, I suppose I forgot to tell you, Kenda, that events that are history and people that are legendary heroes to you are Science-Fiction theater and memorable characters here on Earth." Sammy interjected. Kendalina's jaw dropped as she looked scandalized.
"THEATER?! CHARACTERS?! THAT'S THE BIGGEST INSULT I'VE EVER HEARD! IT'S BLASPHEMY! DISRESPECT! A SICK JOKE..." Kendalina paused looking for another word.
"Slander?" Samantha supplied.
"SLANDER, YES, THAT'S IT! IT'S THE WORST INSULT TO MY HOME THAT I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!" Kendalina launched back into her rant, only to be interrupted again by Sammy.
"You're dead, Kenda." She reminded her.
"THAT'S NOT THE POINT! WAIT 'TILL KEN HEARS ABOUT THIS- I'LL BET YOU ALL THE DIAMONDS IN ARKANIA THAT HE'LL BE AS INSULTED AS I AM! AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON TRIKE AND SKYWALKER- THEY'LL PROBABLY GO OVER THE MOON IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION!" Kendalina screamed, practically hopping up and down with rage. Yugi was now POSITIVE that he could see her other eye turning yellow.
"Kendalina, 'to be put over the moon' means to be happy about something, and speaking of Ken-chan, look- here he comes." Samantha pointed towards a boy with brown, moppy hair in a girl's uniform walking towards them, chatting with a boy with white hair, "Oooh! And he's met Bakura-san!" Samantha blinked and stared at Ken's outfit...
"Kenda... you said that girls were pouncing on Ken-chan while he was walking to school... I think I've diagnosed the major reason and it's not the hair." She said, slowly. Kendalina blinked, looking like she didn't have the faintest clue what Samantha could mean.
"Oh, hello, Miss Ann. I didn't know you were here!" Ken said, smiling at Samantha as Bakura blinked.
"What did you call her?" He asked, speaking perfect English.
"Miss Ann's a friend of the family. I've always called her that." Ken explained to Bakura. Yugi and the others were looking at each other in confusion, as none of them understood English that well.
"Who's this, Ken?" Kendalina asked her son, gesturing towards Bakura. Sammy rolled her eyes- Kenda might have just as well pointed, it's not like she cared about manners.
"Oh, this is Ryou Bakura. Bakura, meet my mother." Ken said, with the usual introductory gestures. Bakura extended his hand, but pulled it back quickly when Kendalina raised an eyebrow at him.
"Ken doesn't seem to understand Japanese very well, so I'm helping him out with it." Bakura offered, as a hesitant explanation. Kendalina looked at her son.
"You mean... Ken, the only reason the farmboy and I understand these people is because WE'VE been using the Force to read their minds and translate it from there. You mean that you haven't been doing that?" Kendalina said, slowly. Ken blinked, his jaw slowly dropping.
"Oh... I guess I didn't really think of that." He muttered, frowning. Kendalina glared down at her son, incredulously.
"It's times like this that I wonder how, precisely, you manage to get out of bed and dress yourself, I swear." Kendalina muttered. Sammy rolled her eyes.
"Kenda, I think Trike should come to pick Ken-chan up from now on- at least HE keeps his mouth shut and thus doesn't accidentally end up verbally abusing his son in front of his classmates." Samantha interjected. Kendalina threw a glare over her shoulder.
"Sammy, don't start with me on that, again..." She warned.
And everyone went their own ways- Momiji and Hatsuharu with Yugi, Joey, Tristan, and Tea, asking questions all the way, and Bakura and Samantha with Kendalina and her son, the two women bickering all the way.

"So you didn't want to go to school, this morning?" Kendalina asked, cracking eggs into a bowl. Samantha had come over to make dinner because Ken had homework and neither Kendalina nor Triclops could make something decent enough to eat.
"School is all well and good, but it doesn't do me ANY good when I can't understand my teachers or fellow classmates." Ken argued. Samantha opened her mouth like she was going to add something- probably to defend Ken- but Kendalina gave her a glare so fierce, Sammy shut her mouth.
"School is a great adventure and a real opportunity." Kendalina replied in a tone that made Samantha snort. Only Ken and Luke understood what she was laughing about.
"NOT YOU, TOO! I'VE ALREADY GOTTEN THIS LECTURE FROM LUKE!" Ken protested, looking horrified. It was at this point that Triclops began to snicker- the way that Kendalina was so antagonistic towards Commander Skywalker made it all the more amusing that she was mimicking him.
"Well, he was right. Ken, look at ME: I dropped out of elementary school when I was in first grade." Kendalina said, exasperated.
"You were running away to train at the Jedi Temple." Ken muttered, but loud enough that his mother heard. Kendalina let out a long suffering sigh.
"But I quit from even THAT and left the Order. And look where it got me!" She insisted.
"Yes, a terrible future, to have escaped the slaughter of the Jedi Order and lived for another twenty years, long enough to bear a child and pass on the genes that would ensure the return of the Jedi." Ken returned with a smug look on his face. Kendalina blinked at him.
"Touché. Now give me a minute to regain my composure to make a proper retort." Kendalina said, turning away from the counter to lean against it and cross her arms, glaring at her son, whom was cheerfully grinning at her from his place at the table.
"Okay, but I win this round." He said, merrily. That was when Kendalina lost her temper.
"GO TO YOUR ROOM!" She shouted, pointing up the stairs to where Ken's bedroom was designated. Ken grinned again and picked up his schoolbooks, skipping up the stairs.
"You shouldn't have taken the bait, Miss Kendalina." Said Luke, whom was reading a book, sitting in the chair next to Ken's. Kendalina whirled around and glared at him.
"SHUT UP, FARMBOY!" She shouted. Luke opened his mouth to say something else, but Triclops' foot nudged his leg under the table. Luke looked over to the other, white-haired man.
"It's a lot less painful to just do what she says." Triclops muttered behind one hand. He too had been reading a book, with a cup of hot chocolate and cream sitting on the table next to him. Luke nodded and wisely took Triclops' advice. Samantha, whom was just putting dinner into the oven, had heard and started to laugh as soon as she closed the oven door.
"HEY, SHUT UP, SAMMY!" Kendalina irritably shouted at her. Sammy, did not shut up, but instead, laughed even harder, sitting on the kitchen floor, her hands on her stomach.
"IT'S NOT FAIR! EVERYONE'S AGAINST ME TODAY!" Kendalina shouted.
A/N: Whew! I'm proud of this . What did you think of Kendalina and Samantha's relationship? I had fun with it!
