“What?!” was the reaction from both men sitting at the table.

“Should I have said it more slowly?” Schuldig said with a smirk, folding his arms across his chest.

“Schuldig,” Crawford growled.

“Look, it isn't my fault the damn thing decided to vacate the premisis,” Schuldig said defensively.

“No, it isn't your fault,” Tatsumi said, pushing his glasses up further on his nose. “It's Mr. Crawford's fault for procuring something that doesn't belong to him in the first place.”

“As we have already established, Tatsumi-san, I was using it for a specific purpose.”

“That was blatantly immoral and probably illegal in the first place. It is hardly relevant to . . .”

“Tatsumi, that really doesn't matter at this point,” Watari said. “What matters now is finding it and bringing it back for processing.”

Tatsumi took a slow, deep breath and conceded, at least in his own head, that Watari had a point. The look he gave Crawford should have frozen the blood in his veins but instead it made him feel uncomfortably warm.

“So, what do we do with this situation?” Schuldig asked.

“Well, the way I see it, the smart thing to do is pair off and look for it,” Watari said. “Since you and Crawford-san know the signature of the individual it makes sense to have one of you go with one of us. I'll go run this by the Chief.”

Schuldig immediately said, “Ill go check on Nagi and Farf. Tell them what's going on and not to expect us back anytime soon.” He sailed out the door without a backward glance at either of the other men.

Tatsumi sat clenching and unclenching his hands, trying to control the nearly overwhelming urge to strangle Crawford before anyone got back. The absolute last thing he needed was to be stuck babysitting the person responsible for this entire debacle.

Watari bounced in a few minutes later, carrying several folders.

“Okay, we have two directions he could have gone . . .”

“One is Kyoto, since he lived most of his life there and the other is Hokkaido, where he did most of his research,” Crawford said.

Tatsumi's eyebrows lifted involuntarily.

“You don't have to be a shinigami to do your homework on someone,” Crawford said, looking at the other man over the top of his glasses.

“Anyway, Schuldig and I will be checking in Kyoto. The two of you will be going to Hokkaido.”

Tatsumi and Crawford spent close to a minute glaring at each other. Watari rolled his eyes before smacking both of them in the head with one of the folders. “Oh, grow up, both of you.”

Tatsumi and Crawford glanced at the other man before grudgingly admitting he was right and they probably needed to get moving.
