Tsuzuki walked eagerly into the office he shared with Hisoka and sighed. All the research he’d done, all for this one day and he could hardly contain his excitement. Taking his seat, he turned on the computer and began to type in the data he needed, silently thanking Tatsumi for buying the new software which allowed them to watch the events happening on Earth through the computers as if they were movies.
After he finished tapping the last few buttons he leaned back in his chair and waited. While he was waiting he started to think about Tatsumi. He knew the man would be furious with him if he found out about what he had been doing the past months. This new software wasn’t supposed to be used for personal matters but to be used to keep track of people that may be involved in a case. The extremely strict secretary would surely maul him for doing this.
‘Not only that, it may even cost me my job… and Hisoka…’ he trailed off as the empath entered his mind.
“Hisoka… might get angry at me…” he sighed again. Ever since Hisoka had saved him that day he knew they’d become closer. Much closer than he thought they ever would be. From what he understood he was probably the closest person in the emapth’s life. Tsuzuki had taken it upon himself to keep that position in the teenager’s life. He loved the young Shinigami as if he were his own little brother but…
Lately, it seemed Hisoka wanted more than just platonic love. He wasn’t exactly sure but the things he’d been doing for him were quite different from how he used to treat him. He didn’t scold him as much, came to visit him more often, invited him over himself sometimes, brought him treats (especially delicious apple pies), he complimented him more, his nickname “Idiot” was sounding more like a pet name than an insult and there were even moments where Hisoka would seemingly make excuses to touch him when normally the empathy himself hated being touched.
The older Shinigami wasn’t sure what to interpret it as. All these could be simple acts of a good, comfortable friendship but just the way the teenager would act made him think differently at times.
Thinking of this made him sigh once more. He’d hoped that he was wrong and was just simply misunderstanding the empath’s actions because, truth be told, he loved the boy dearly but he just wasn’t in love with him. It surprises himself actually because from how he’d find himself admiring the boy at how determine and, despite his physical disadvantage, how strong he could be.
At a time he thought he actually was falling for Hisoka when he had come to rescue him from Muraki who’d had won a night with him in that poker game. And the day he jumped into Touda’s very hell fire just to save him made him cherish the teenager even more. He’d been very grateful to Hisoka for risking his own life that time just to save someone like him… someone who wasn’t human…
Yes, around those times he thought it was the young Shinigami he was falling in love with till he realized it wasn’t actually him he had fallen for… but it was the very boy that resembled him so much that his heart had went to…
Shutting his eyes, a mental image of the said boy, Hijiri Minase, appeared and looking like from how Tsuzuki remembered him two years ago. He doubted he still looked like that now. It’s been two years since he saw him he probably looks much older and maybe even taller and handsome. From some of the research he’d been doing lately apparently the boy would be turning eighteen today. He wasn’t even sure if he should refer to him as a boy anymore. He guessed it was just habit by now since he hadn’t seen him for a long time.
He really missed Hijiri and he was hoping he’d somehow get to see him again someday. Ever since they left him after the Sagaatanas incident the dark-haired boy had moved house. Tsuzuki remembered he went to visit him a while back only to discover the young violinist was nowhere to be found. He’d been worried sick till one of the other students who were probably one of his friends told him he went to a different school for professional violinists.
The girl also mentioned he’d been looking pretty down for over a year.
That’s when it hit the man why Hijiri probably really left. The teenager practically admitted he loved him but at that time Tsuzuki wasn’t sure he felt the same way. He cared about the dark green-eyed violinist, that was for sure, but he didn’t think he actually loved him like that. At least, at that time…
But now he was certainly sure of it. He realized he did really love the boy after all this time and now he really wanted to see him just to make sure he would be all right. After all, he knew that even though the boy loved him in return that they could never be together. Guardians of Death were never allowed to be together with the living. It was just against the rules and it’s said that the punishment could be severe if something like that was ever discovered. Such thoughts made Tsuzuki shudder almost violently.
He was so caught up in his thoughts he didn’t notice the computer had finished and there on the screen was the very boy he had been thinking about. He was at his friend, Yamashita’s house surrounded by many of his other friends who were passing him presents and enjoying a very delicious looking cake.
Tsuzuki took a moment to study the now almost an adult teen. He had definitely changed over the last two years. He was now much taller than before, his frame no longer too small but now well-built and perhaps just a tad muscular. His hair was as enrichingly dark as before but slightly different. It seemed a little shorter and there was a parting on the left side of his bangs. The older man had to hold back a gasp as he saw the boy’s stunningly beautiful face. He had gotten really gorgeous since they’d last seen each other. Even his forest-green eyes seemed prettier than before.
The Shinigami leaned on his hand watching the boy have fun with his friends. Just seeing him this way made him long for his touch right now. He had it a long time ago during that case with the teen, even had Hijiri’s love at that time and could have accepted it. But he didn’t. Instead he had left back to Meifu knowing full well it wasn’t supposed to be. However, when he had left it always felt like something was missing. Like he was missing something to go with his sweets or like he had to go back somewhere for something. After so long he finally realized is was the dark-haired teen that had made him feel that way. But he couldn’t do anything about it because he had suddenly just disappeared in his life.
But after much consideration he’d decided if he couldn’t be with him he’d at least keep an eye on him. After gathering as much information as he could without getting noticed he’d learned the boy was back in town and living at a new location. Being too afraid to face him after so long he just decided to observe him for awhile at least till he had the courage to meet him face to face again.
Tsuzuki looked up as Hijiri’s voice came to his ears. He didn’t sound too different but it had aged over time. It sounded as exotic to the man just as much as it did before. He watched as the teen suddenly excused himself from his friends and walked to the bathroom. For a moment Tsuzuki blushed and thought he should look away because it wouldn’t be right to spy on Hijiri like this but soon he saw the boy had other intentions when he locked the door and walked over to the sink to stare sadly into his reflection. He almost looked like he going to cry at any second. Tsuzuki felt a pang of hurt and guilt in his heart. He couldn’t help but feel so responsible for this. That he had caused Hijiri to be this way; to be so sad and hurt.
The man looked on sympathetically as Hijiri washed his face off, trying to clear up any trance of sadness and shook his head lightly to recollect himself as best he can before walking back out to his friends, a big but obviously fake smile appearing on his handsome face. Tsuzuki had to wonder, how much did he keep his charade up?
The Shinigami decided he couldn’t take this anymore. He had to see the boy and make things right again. To do something that’ll ease Hijiri’s pain. Standing up to go he turned around only for the sight of his young partner Hisoka Kurosaki to come into his view. The boy stood there, one hand on his hip and wearing his usual surly expression.
“Hisoka, how long have you been here..?” he asked him quietly, knowing the boy had caught him.
“Long enough to see and find out just what you’ve been doing privately as of late.” he said in his deep, cold tone. “Where were you going?” he asked, eyeing his coat that he had picked up.
Tsuzuki looked down at the floor, scared to meet his partner’s eyes and answered lightly “I… I’m going to Earth… ”
Hisoka folded his arms and looked past him to the computer screen.
“To Hijiri?” he asked coolly, looking back at the man. Tsuzuki slowly looked back up and gave the light-haired boy a nod, feeling more nervous with each passing second.
The boy sighed, “I sensed you loved someone… I couldn’t tell who though…” he said. Tsuzuki knew the other teen was trying to keep his posture up. This only proved that he was right… Hisoka did have feelings for him.
The older Shinigami took one step forward, wanting to make sure he’d be okay but the teen just looked away, glaring sulkily at the nearby wall. Tsuzuki felt even more awful he was making another person hurt because of him. “Hisoka… I-”
“Just go on… I’ll cover for you. Just go…” he told the older Shinigami with a very icy voice. The purple-eyed man felt another pang and knew it wouldn’t be good to try to do anything for Hisoka right now. The boy surely didn’t want anything to do with him at the moment. Putting his coat on he began to walk towards the exit. When he almost walked passed Hisoka he whispered “Hisoka… I’m sorry… But thank you.” before finally heading out.
Once he was gone, Hisoka tightened his arms around himself, trying desperately to hold his tears back. Making his way to his desk he sat down and looked up at the computer screen, glaring bitterly at the moving image of Hijiri Minase. “I knew… you loved my look alike…” he whispered sadly before angrily shutting the computer off.
:::On Earth:::
Tsuzuki was running down the street, looking at each house he passed by and trying to find the address of Yamashita’s house. Since Hijiri didn’t have parents or any relatives he had his birthday parties at his best friend’s place instead where the party had been taking place now.
The man stopped for a moment to catch his breath, panting and trying to recall the image of the house he had seen on the computer. The image came clear along with the memory of the dark-haired boy’s sad facial expression. Looking so lost and hopeless…
“Hijiri… I promise. I promise I’ll find you and make things right again.” he quietly said to the air hoping somehow those words would reach the teen. Standing up straight again he continued walking, examining each house’s address thoroughly and making sure he wouldn’t accidentally pass it up. He only hoped that Fate would be on his side and he’d find it soon. He had to get to Hijiri…
But as he continued he couldn’t help but think of Hisoka again. He’d left the boy looking so angry and melancholy. He didn’t want to leave him like that but he just didn’t know what he should do. He couldn’t just lie and pretend he actually returned his feelings because that would be wrong and unfair to the empath. But knowing he couldn’t feel what Hisoka felt for him and that hurting the boy he so cared for made him feel just as guilty when he basically brushed off Hijiri’s love confession.
He was so confused. He really didn’t know how to handle all of this without anyone getting hurt but it seemed like someone would be in the end. All he could do right now was hope to make Hijiri feel better and when the time came hopefully he can somehow do the same for Hisoka. That is… if the boy would even want to talk to him anymore…
Snapping out of his thoughts he looked around before continuing down the long street-way wondering just how far Yamashita’s estate was. After what seemed like fifteen minutes of passing house after house he finally came to what looked to be the right place. Fishing out the piece of paper that he’d quickly written the location on he looked to see that this must indeed be the place. Taking a deep breath, gathering all the courage he could muster he advanced carefully up to the front porch and rung the doorbell, praying he didn’t have the wrong abode.
Waiting a few seconds, the door opened to reveal a woman that appeared to be in her late thirties, Tsuzuki guessed that this must be Yamashita’s mom.
“Hello, young man. How may I help you?” she asked politely. Tsuzuki made a slight smile before giving his reply.
“I heard Hijiri Minase was having his birthday party here. I’m a friend he knew about two years ago. May I come in?” he said, hoping he sounded friendly enough to her. The woman stared at him for a moment and smiled warmly before nodding and standing aside to let him in. It was times like this he was thankful he didn’t age to look any older than eighteen even though he was supposed to look twenty-six.
When he entered he took off his shoes and hung up his trench coat and his black over coat on the rack and followed the woman down the hallway that supposedly lead to the living room where the party was.
“You know, you’re a little late. We’ve already had cake and Hijiri’s half-way done with opening his presents.” she grinned as she told him. Tsuzuki laughed lightly, scratching the back of his head. “Ha, ha, I’m sorry. I got a little held up on my way over.” he said, mentally frowning as the empath once again came to his mind. The woman stopped suddenly when they came to the living room.
“Hijiri! A friend of yours just arrived.” she called out to a dark-haired teenager sitting on the couch to get his attention from the many other friends who had shown up today.
The boy looked up from his friends to turn around with a bright smile on his face only for his smile to drop, his forest-green eyes to widen and his mouth to hang open as he saw, for the first time in two years, the very man he’d never thought he’d ever see again in his entire life time. The man who had haunted his dreams for so long, the man he had fallen in love with and confessed to. The man who had left him…
Tsuzuki looked into the boy’s face, seeing the look of surprise, sadness and perhaps a small linger of love in those beautiful eyes. Taking a few steps forward he beamed his biggest smile as much as he could before saying to the boy, “Hey Hijiri! Long time, no see!” he said brightly, waving his hand in a peaceful greeting to the stunned boy.
“Tsuzuki….”
