This Must Be Hell
Tatsumi stood in the doorway of Watari's room, watching. He hated this. Hated waiting for something good or bad to happen. There had been no change for three days. With each agonizingly slow minute that passed, his nerves stretched tighter as he watched someone he loved fight the poison coursing through his system.
What was possibly worse was watching Blaze try to deal with this. She had never been close to anyone since her death and concern was a new experience for her. She had refused to leave the room for the last three days. They had slept curled into one of the oversized chairs in the room. She would wake up from nightmares and touch him almost frantically to make certain he was actually there and safe. He had never seen her worried, or upset before. She had always been utterly fearless when facing down any kind of nasty thing the universe saw fit to throw at her. She had put herself into so many dangerous and probably lethal situations because it would spare others. She was a guardian to the very core of her being. It was killing him again to watch the woman for whom he was certain the term “Nightmare bitch goddess from hell” had originally been coined, suffer through the fear of losing someone permanently.
He was just thankful that Blaze's body was slightly different from the average shinigami. She had taken at least six of those poisoned darts. Thankfully, her system had neutralized the poison almost instantly. It was why she had tried to put herself between the darts and them. She had known that her shields wouldn't work considering they were fire based. She had correctly guessed that her body could process and be rid of any dangerous substance much faster than either of them.
He walked over and sat next to her. Pulling her into his arms, he felt her clutch at him as if for dear afterlife.
“This must be hell. Because, I can't think of anything I've ever gone through that's worse than this,” she said, her words slightly muffled against his chest. She looked up at him. “Have I told you how much I love you, Chiro?”
“Only about thirty times in the past hour. Not that I'm complaining. He'll come out of it, Blaze. I know he will.”
“He'd better. I don't think I could stand losing him.”
“We are not going to lose him.”
“There are days when I wish I'd been more of a healer. But that was never my strong point,” she said.
“No, my love, your strong point seems to be dispatching things that would give normal shinigami nightmares to the other realms.”
She smiled slightly. “That's certainly true.”
“Do you need anything?”
“Maybe something to eat,” she said. “I can't really remember when I had something last.”
“I'll go get you something.”
“Thank you.”
He leaned over and kissed her. “I'll be right back.”
“Good. Chiro,” she said reaching out to grab his hand.
“Yes?”
“I don't love him more than I do you. He's my heart and you're my soul. I couldn't lose either one of you.”
“I know that, my love. This is equally hard for me. I'm just more used to dealing with things like this than you are. I'll be back,” he said, walking out and closing the door quietly behind him.
“Come on, Honey. You have to wake up and help me keep the suit in line. I can't do everything by myself you know,” she said, holding on to Watari's hand. “Gods, what do normal people do in situations like this?”
She took a deep breath and started to do something she hadn't done since she was alive.
“Great Mother and Great Father, if you're inclined to listen to me, I'd appreciate it,” she sighed. “That sounds so corny, doesn't it? I mean, I know you personally. Just . . . give him back to us. I'll do anything you ask of me. Please. Chiro and I need him. We're both too serious most of the time. We need his light, his simple joy in day to day things, his warmth. Please.”
“I did hear her say anything, didn't I?” a man's voice said from behind her.
“Yes. You did,” said a woman.
“Mom, Dad? What are you doing here?” Blaze asked, dumbfounded to find the great mother and father of the universe in the room with her.
“How soon she forgets,” He said.
“You called us. Remember?”
“Yes. I remember. Look, I've never asked you for anything since my death but . . .”
“We know. It's about time you did.”
“I don't understand,” Blaze said, looking from one to the other of them.
“We've been worried about this stubborn refusal of yours to let anyone help you. I mean, independence is one thing, but shutting out all offers of help is nearly as annoying as those other idiots crying for the moon,” He said.
“Now, as for the do anything we ask of you part: You just have to stay with them. No bailing because you think they'd be safer without you. You've made your commitments to these men in your soul. We expect nothing less than for you to honor those commitments,” She said.
Tatsumi was just coming out of the elevator when he heard “SEIICHIRO!” from Watari's room. He dropped the food he'd been holding and sprinted the length of the hall. He nearly flew through the door.
“She's really loud, isn't she,” Watari said, opening one eye.
Tatsumi hugged him and Blaze. Partially because Blaze wasn't letting go and partially because he needed to hold on to both of them.
“Never. Do. That. To. Us. Again.”
“Great, I've been conscious less than two minutes and I've already been threatened by both my wife and my husband.”
Tatsumi and Blaze both stared at him for a moment.
“Oh, come on. Don't tell me you haven't at least thought about it.”
“Do you think they'd really allow us to?” Tatsumi asked.
“They're going to,” Blaze said. Tatsumi was happy to see the familiar spark of determination in her eyes. “You boys forget who and what your future wife is.”
“Like you'd ever let us forget,” Watari said, laughing. “Ow! Remind me not to do that for a while. It hurts.”
“No. I won't let you forget,” Blaze said smugly.
