Death Wish

Chapter One:

Love

"Well, Light-kun, have you decided?" Ryuzaki asked patiently.

L/Ryuzaki had just invited Light over to him personal home. The two of them had been dating since the Kira case had come to a close almost a year before. Nearly everyone on the task force had ended up dead, other then L, Light, and Matsuda. Of course, the murderer had been a man who worked for Yostuba Productions. The man had broke into the Task Force head quarters and started killing as many of the members as possible. (Of course, no one knew how he managed to get in.)

After closely examining the Death Note, L and Light concluded that the man had written his own name down after being threatened by the shinigami Ryuk, then as an act of desperation, decided to take as many opposing people with him as he could before he died.

This was the end of Kira.

L and Light only grew closer after that and were now both in their senior year at To-Oh University. Although, Ryuzaki had yet to disclose him real name to Light, the sandy-haired man determined this would occur whenever he was ready, considering he'd never told anyone before. Light-kun understood. Or at least he hoped he did. Their relationship had progressed greatly, even in the face of many opposing conflicts. Now his shorter lover was inviting him to him house for the first time ever to meet him family, or whomever he considered family. Of course, Ryuzaki had been to dinner at Light's place several times, meeting everyone.

"Do you even have to ask?" Light replied, a sly smile on his handsome face. He knew his koi understood him. Ryuzaki gave a shy grin.

"You'll walk with me after school today and perhaps even stay the night." With L, it wasn't a question. It was exactly what Light had been thinking.

"What makes you think I'd do such a thing? After all, I don't even know where you live."

"You love me too much not to." The dark-haired, pale young woman insisted, biting the end of him thumb cutely. Light laughed.

"It's a date." The younger just smiled.

**Later that Day**

Light walked out of the school, looking everywhere for Ryuzaki. The teen dressed in a simple white long-sleeve t-shirt and blue jeans seemed to have a good knack for disappearing.

That was when he finally spotted him.

His lover was sitting quietly in that odd fashion with him legs pulled up on a park bench not far from the school. Him head was down, so he was most likely asleep. The sandy-haired college student laughed, then leaned in close to the one on the bench.

"Ryuzaki?" He whispered. When he heard nothing but deep breathing, Light confirmed it. His lover had fallen asleep waiting for him. The other didn't even stir as the taller brushed aside a bit of him thick black hair. Softly, Light pressed his lips against Ryuzaki's, kissing him just right. The other's dark eyes fluttered open.

"Ready to go?" Light questioned, already knowing the answer.

"You know that answer to that." L replied, "Let's get going."

The pair walked down the street for a time before eventually getting to a somewhat bad neighborhood of the city. There were poor, dilapidated buildings all around them. Ryuzaki lives here? Light asked himself. With all the money he makes as a detective, he could surely afford a better place to live.

"Before you ask, this is where I live simply because no one would ever suspect to look for L here." Ryuzaki answered Light's question before it was asked. "We're nearly there."

Looking around at the possible threats, such as street gangs, Light by instinct put his arm around Ryuzaki protectively. The other didn't lean into the security, but didn't pull away either.

They stopped at the apartment building on the far end of the street. On the outside, it was just as torn and shabby as the rest of the neighborhood, but on the inside, it was just as nice as their old Task Force headquarters, although not nearly as big. It was obvious the entire building belonged to L. Just inside there were stairs covered with plush violet carpet leading up or down. Light simply followed Ryuzaki up the stairs to the sixth floor.

"Hey Ryuzaki, ever think of putting an elevator in here?" Light asked. L just looked at him. "Of course, you wouldn't want anyone to know this place was any nicer inside then it was out, and there's no way to build one without others noticing."

"Correct."

All down the hall were rows of doors, just like in any other apartment building. The only difference: as opposed to numbers, each door was neatly marked with a label. They finally came to a stop at a door halfway down the hall. L removed a small, two-sided key from him pocket and inserted it into the lock. Almost instantly, a keypad slid open beside the door. The black-haired girl punched in a series of numbers, then pressed him finger to the place beside the numbers, verifying him fingerprints. The door clicked open.

Inside was just a regular apartment.

Almost.

It was customized to meet L's standards. Light looked around. There was nearly ten televisions in an entertainment center, each placed neatly in it's own little place. Only about half of them were on. The carpet was a lush blue-gray, the walls were white, and there were few windows. A black cat scrambled from under the couch to rub lovingly on L's legs until he picked him up. He purred.

"His name is Isis." Ryuzaki explained. Then gestured around the room, "Allow me to give you a brief tour."

They walked through the living room into a homey kitchen decorated with colors of dark blue and green. Adjacent to the kitchen was the bathroom, but there wasn't anything of significance to it. Just beyond the cooking area was a door that led to a balcony overlooking the city. L didn't offer any type of guide information, deciding everything was self-explanatory. Abandoning the kitchen and balcony, they did a 180 degree turn to return to the living room, where the bedrooms were adjoining.

Light got to see L's bedroom first. It was exactly as he expected it to be: there was a full-sized bed, several computer monitors on a mahogany desk, proper lighting as well as other various décor, plus a neighboring bathroom. When they exited to see the other room, Light couldn't help but wonder what other family L could have that lived with him. It was obvious the other was an orphan, so he had no parents, but whom else…

"Light, I would like you to meet my little brother, Hikari." L introduced.

Inside the room was a small boy who looked only to be around 10 years old. His black hair was spiked up in all directions, the tips blood red. His golden bangs flowed down to frame his innocent, pale white face. What stood out the most were his eyes, large amethyst eyes that seemed deep and intense with hidden intelligence. The boy wore black shoes with silver chains for laces, fitting blue leather pants that hugged his hips deliciously, and a comparable black long-sleeve t-shirt. As for apparel, he adorned a thick, silver-studded leather black dog collar around his neck, a silver teardrop earring, and a matching belt with a silver buckle.

As soon as the boy saw his older brother, he jumped up from his desk chair and hugged the other, causing Isis to jump from Ryuzaki's arms. Surprisingly, L hugged him back warmly.

"Hi, Le-" The boy started to greet, but was cut off.

"Hikari…" L muttered. The smaller looked over to Light and blushed in embarrassment.

"S-sorry, L, I-I didn't realize you had company." His voice was soft and melodic.

"Hikari, this is, well, you know."

"P-pleased to finally meet you, L-Light-san. I-I see you and my brother are getting along well." He shot a glace at L, who pretended not to notice.

"I'm pleased to meet you as well, Hikari. I've heard a lot about you." Light made an attempt to shake hands with the small boy, but Hikari ignored it.

"Really?" His eyebrows shot up. "That's not right. From where?"

"Hikari, there's no need to be impolite. You know of your reputation amongst the enforcers of justice." L chided.

"S-sorry, I'm know I'm being rude. I'm simply not accustomed to anyone, other then L, recognizing my pseudonym like this." He folded his arms. "To virtually everyone, I'm just like my brother, someone without a face at all, just a name or letter on a computer."

"I'm aware of that, yet no one knows you are L's younger brother, right?" Light asked, knowing the answer.

"N-naturally. I'm L's aibou alias, Hikari." L smiled when he heard Hikari call himself L's aibou. It was a cute name many Japanese police officers began calling the small boy since he'd helped on so many investigations as a near equal to L himself. They saw him as L's little helper. Hikari hadn't seemed to appreciate it very much, but said nothing.

"That in itself is a great feat, Hikari. Many officers have little trust in L himself, let alone someone who calls himself L's partner." Light pointed out.

"That's true, Light, but the only basis they have for not trusting me is the fact I refuse to show myself to them. In the end, no one can argue with positive results." L added.

"In a sense, you can say that, but there are still many who would argue that point. Without much success, I might add." Light reminded him, then turned to Hikari, "Are you working on any cases now?"

"Yeah," The small boy muttered, "the case of my missing boyfriend. He's late again."

"This is the third time in a row he's done that, Hikari. Perhaps it is time to seek out a new lover." L pointed out, then he said to Light, "This teen has caused a lot of other problems, of which I will tell you about later." Light just nodded.

As if on cue, Hikari's computer began to beep repeatedly, indicating someone trying to contact him. The small boy motioned for the others to keep quiet, returned to his computer chair, and accepted the typed message:

-H,
I'm sorry, but I'm going to be late.
My father's having one of his
Dumbass fits again.
I'll meet you there in about
Half an hour.
Later,
-D

Hikari read the message as it appeared on his screen. L walked over to the boy when he noticed he wasn't typing a reply and read it over, but said nothing as the small boy began to answer back:
~D,
You're a Liar.
Don't bother meeting me today.
I won't be there.
"Later"
~ H

Hikari had the message all typed out, but didn't send it. Instead, the teen sighed and deleted what he wrote and tried again.

"Tell him Light and I are going to accompany you two in a double date." L instructed, having a bad premonition. Hikari nodded.

~D,
It's okay.
I can meet you then.
Is it okay if my brother and him boyfriend
come with us if they want?
~H

D replied distastefully.

- H,
I don't give a shit as long
As that nosey bro of yours stops prying into our
Fucking business.
And he'd better not be reading this or
I'll kick your ass.
Understand?
-D

Hikari flinched and looked up at his brother, who remained unreadable. Light, who couldn't read the screen from where he was standing, recognized the look, and walked over to his koi, placing a comforting arm around the other's shoulders,. The small boy hunched over in embarrassment and responded:
~D,
Yes.
See you at the restaurant.
Bye.
~H

H has signed off.
D has signed off.

Hikari sat back in his chair, expecting to be reprimanded in some small way. Light wanted to say something, but chose against it seeing as how he hadn't known Hikari very long.

"Hikari, does D know your real name?" L questioned. The small boy looked up in surprise, but quickly hid it.

"N-no."

"Just as I thought." L then turned to Light. "We best prepare ourselves for a double date in half an hour."

"Where are we going?" Light asked.

"The new American restaurant down town." Hikari answered keeping his voice quiet and head down. He knew L would not stand for the way D treated people. Something bad was surely going to happen. Light nodded and walked from the room. L started to follow, then stopped and turned towards him brother. He made sure they were alone.

"Yugi, why do you fight against it when you fully understand it is for the best?"

"…Lawliet…I'm sure you already know the answer to that." Yugi/Hikari answered with his head down.

~~ ^_^ ~~

Upon their arrival at the restaurants, Light, L, and Hikari all waited patently for Duke to arrive. When he didn't show, the three ordered their meals.
