Behind The Double Mirrors
We're Not What You See
Chapter Two: Connections
{6 hours later...}
{Toronto}
{Kimberley's P.o.V.}
I held Maxine's shaking hand, InuYasha holding her left, as we stood in the middle of Meg's once familiar living/dining room.
I was in shock, but Max...she was shaking so badly and breathing so heavy. I think InuYasha and I both thought that if we released her hands, she'd fall down and crumble.
I tossed my long, auburn-ish hair over my shoulder, tightening my grip on my "little sister's" hand, meeting her gaze. We were both so scared...
{flashback}
"Guys, this is great!" Meg said, collapsing on the new black leather couch. Max fell onto a black and white-skull and crossbone "mushroom" chair as I admired the space we'd decorated together. I flipped a switch and a neon light came on, hung above the breakfast bar window thing that connected this space to the kitchen, that proclaimed: 'Pirates Party Better' with a little blinking rum bottle. Max and me had pitched in and bought Meg and Jack new furniture, including sexy black sidetables and a coffee table that had red Japanese symbols carved into it. On the top of the coffee table, the Japanese kanjis for 'pirate', 'cat', and 'fox', were carved the largest and most elegant.
I smiled and collapsed with Meg,"Consider it an engagement present, hun...you two deserve the very best," I said, hugging her. Max joined us and added,"Plus, we get to enjoy it too, when we barge in when you least expect it and interrupt pirate sex." Meg laughed and rolled her eyes,"Deal," she said, hugging us both.
The surprise wasn't over...
"You didn't see OUR surprise, lasses!" Jack yelled from down the hall. The three of us jumped up. We'd been so busy with our 'project' that we hadn't taken notice to what our lover's had been up to.
The three of them ran out, tackling us. Jack covered Meg's eyes, Seto covered mine and InuYasha covered Max's...and they led us into the hallway.
They counted to three..."One," Seto said. "Two," InuYasha continued. "Three!" Jack shouted and they uncovered our eyes. What they'd done brought tears to all of our eyes...
They'd covered (literally COVERED) the hallway with pictures of all of us. Group pictures, professional pictures, vacation pictures...
The biggest one was in the center of the wall. It showed the six of us, at the beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, all lined up and standing in the waves, arms linked up. Smiles were captured on our faces and around the picture frame, it said,"I hope you had the time of your lives..."
Another picture that made Meg cry was one beside her's and Jack's bedroom door. It was the picture Max had taken of their 'engagement' kiss...they'd been dancing around and Jack had tucked a small rose in her hair, taking her hands and kneeling down...the picture was beautiful, the rose wrapped in Meg's hair, her ring-cladden hand on his shoulder and Jack looking particularly handsome, his face red (although you couldn't tell because the picture was black and white, save for the red rose). The words around it said,"It's like a kiss from a rose..."
The pictures that were framed had quotes around them but most of them were snapshots that were just pinned or taped up. There were millions...
{end of flashback}
Max and I stared at the beautiful black wooden coffee table now and it was in peices, 'our' kanjis seperated. The pictures in the hall were torn, cracked, burnt, or just plain mutilated. I wanted to cry and I clenched my sister's hand tighter as we stopped in front of the bedroom. Suddenly, nothing else mattered, but the evidence in front of us now...it wasn't the mutilation of the whole apartment it was the looks of the once pure-white bedroom...
Nothing else mattered but the fact that there was blood...on the wall, on the carpet, on the vanity mirror, on the white sheets. I stepped into the room, processing the bullet holes in the walls, the cracks in the mirror. "It's like a kiss from a rose on the grave..."I closed my eyes, standing in front of the vanity... "...the more I get of you the stranger it feels, yea...now that your rose is in bloom, the light hits the gloom on the grave..."
I heard myself whisper,"It's a nightmare..."
I stumbled as Maxine almost collapsed with me. Something had just happened and I couldn't explain what. I'd seen something else for a moment...I had been somebody else... and from the look Max gave me, she'd done the same. Her gaze fell on the blood spill in front of the vanity mirror, where a picture of Meg and Jack lay, soaked crimson.
"Excuse me, you're standing in a crime scene..." an oddly familiar, rough-ish voice said from behind us. The three of us turned and looked at the official looking dude that was now standing in the hall. He was wearing the type of suit that screamed...'I'm an investigator official dude'.
"We're standing in our friend's home. Why does it bother you?" InuYasha asked, all...rude-like-him. The investigator-ish official dude narrowed his eyes and snapped back,"Because your friend's house is a crime scene. Are you..." he glanced down at the papers he held,"Maxine ...can't pronounce that... Kimberley Kaiba and a Mr. InuYasha?" he asked.
"Yes, we are," I replied,"And you are?"
"Investigator Max Susagep," he replied curtly.
The name hit me like a bag of rocks in the head. It sounded so... "..familiar.." InuYasha whispered, meeting my gaze, perking a brow. Max released my hand and stepped towards the vanity, looking at her reflection in the cracked mirror, then closing her eyes as if remembering something.
"Meg's alive...isn't she?" she asked suddenly, her eyes snapping open as she turned to look at the investigator.
"...yes..." he mumbled, almost...regrettably,"She's at the Toronto Main Hospital."
"Can you take us to her?" Max, InuYasha, and me all said together. 'Max Susagep' sighed and nodded,"I'll take you in my vehicle."
We followed him back down the stairs as a crew of Canadian police walked up. Susagep taped off the door with a 'Police Line' and whispered something to a guy (apparently another cop?) who had a hat pulled low over his face.
As we all piled in the black Hummer, Susagep glancing at me intently every now and then in the rearview mirror.
My suspicion grew as we pulled into the hospital parking lot.
"Something's wrong Kim..." Max whispered as Max Susagep turned off the Hummer and stepped out before us. InuYasha took her hand as we watched Susagep answer his cell phone.
Something was very wrong.
And Susagep was the key to all that had gone wrong...I could feel it.
{{Meg: ...I hate you right now...
Me: Psh, you know you love me! I kept you alive!
Meg: For NOW!
Kim: ...Susagep is--
Me: Shush, Kim! You'll give it away for the readers! >.>
Meg and Kim: WE ARE THE READERS!
Me: Mwahaha...}}
{You know you love me! Even if this chapter was...vague-ish.}
