Chapter Four: Reunite, for a moment.
After leaving InuYasha to enjoy his Doritos (way too much), I walked to the lobby and rode up to the fourth floor. Once I arrived on the first floor, a crowd of people..well they crowded in. Among them, I noticed the three official type guys, glancing my way...which was awkward. But my mind was set on Meg.
Once on the fourth floor, the crowd had emptied, except the officials. I walked, remembering the room number, 405, down the hall. The officials followed close behind, which made me..even more nervous. I arrived at the door, ran inside, and slammed the door behind me while a tall, brown-haired girl glomped me,"Kim!"
I stumbled back, slightly shocked, before I realized who it was,"S-Sarah..?" I asked, then,"Sarah!" and hugged her back lightly,"It's so good to see you. How is the baby and how're you and Mayank?" Sarah smiled brightly, pulling me a bit into the room, where she simply gestured to where her boy, Mayank, sat with their toddler, Om, in his lap. I smiled and gave a small wave to the shy, handsome faced Hindu man before asking about Meg.
"She's fine," Sarah said, before I could ask, pointing to the curtains that separated the room. I saw the outline of a male's frame standing next to the bed, both whomever it was and Meg talking in hushed voices. I perked a brow at Sarah, but she simply smiled and nodded her head towards the curtain as she sat down next to Mayank. I opened the curtains and took in the scene.
Meg laid in the bed, looking better than I thought she would, a bandage wrapped on her head. She had a few deep cuts and bruises on her arms, but at least she was alive. She held the hand of none other than..Jack, who was asleep on a chair, his head fallen forward. He had cuts and bruises on his arms and face, one eye black and swollen. He looked like hell and between the two of them, they could've won some type of award for being so awesome that they survived.
But the one standing and who had been talking to Meg peaked my interest. It was Seto.
"Hello, Kimberley," he said softly. His blue eyes sparkled as he looked at me. I tore my gaze away,"Hi," I whispered, smiling at Meg,"And hello to you, ye bloody pirate."
"Hi, Kim," she replied giving me a one-armed hug back as I leaned down and embraced my friend lightly,"Where's Max?"
"She'll be here, InuYasha too," I replied.
"Can we talk?" Seto asked,"If I can steal her, Meg."
"Of course, Kaiba..and thanks again," Meg replied as he gestured for me to go first.
I walked back into the main part of the room, where the officials from earlier had also arrived. I glanced back at Seto and perked a brow, but he simply smirked and nodded to the men. We walked out into the hall and I waited for him to say something.
"So..how've you been?" he asked softly.
"..well it's been kinda..awkward having to answer friends when they ask why you left..." I muttered, looking up at him.
"We had to do what we had to do, Kim..." he replied, a bit bitterly, before his tone changed to kindness,"...but I am sorry."
"Hm. Well, it's over and done with," I mumbled.
We stood there awkwardly as some orderlies rushed past, along with a doctor. I heard snatches of what they said,"It's a bloody mess up there.. ..He says it wasn't him but no one else had been in there with them.. ..the poor girl.."
I turned quickly as a nurse rushed down with a stretcher. Seto and I exchanged glances as he walked in front of me, down the hall. "Mr. Kaiba, I think it's one of your acquaintances!" A doctor shouted. I looked past Seto and saw the bloody mess of the elevator.
"Maxine..." I whispered, rushing forth. InuYasha sat in the elevator, hunched over Max's body. She was breathing, her face pale, clutching her impaled stomach. She looked so confused...but thank goddess, she was alive. Her breathing was coarse and she clung to InuYasha until she caught my eyes. I rushed forward, but someone put an arm out to stop me as she was lifted onto the stretcher. Her eyes followed me, but seemed to fade as she fell unconcious. "..we're losing her.." someone muttered.
InuYasha sat there, shaking and staring at his hands as if Maxine was still laying there. I gasped for air, like I couldn't breathe, trying not to cry. My voice shook with sobs as I spoke softly and slowly,"InuYasha..what..what happened?"
He looked up at me and I now realized he had tears in his eyes. It took me by surprise. InuYasha...the most of the time asshole I thought Maxine could dump and do better...was crying,"I tried..Kim, I really did...I tried to keep her safe.. if not for me, for you..." he whispered.
"..InuYasha.." I whispered,"..I know..I know.."
The orderlies guided him away to clean up his wounds but he spoke again before leaving,"..watch her for me..please.."
I nodded slightly, turning back to Seto. He looked at me grimly, hanging up a cell phone,"Sixth floor," he said. I nodded again, looking at the elevator. The metal panes were dented and blood hadn't yet stained the cheap carpet flooring.
I looked at him again helplessly and he looked intently in my eyes,"I'll tell Meg where you are and what happened. I'll make sure everything goes alright with Maxine.." he whispered. I nodded once more, speechless before I found my voice,"What are you doing here?"
"I could ask you the same question, really," he replied,"But I'm here, you're here, and that's what matters."
He pulled me into an affectionate embrace and whispered,"...I missed you..."
Startled, I hugged back lightly,"..I..I missed you too, Seto..." I said, speaking his name for the first time since arrival.
He stepped back and looked at the elevator, which some janitors were now cleaning up, and said,"I'll walk you up..we'll..we'll take the stairs."
He held my hand, in a protective way, as we walked to the sixth floor and arrived in front of Maxine's surgery room. They had me wait outside, but Seto commanded that they call him with updates and step out to tell me everything. I sat in the hallway as he spoke with the doctors, still shaky, picturing in my head Maxine. I remembered when we ate at IHOP for the first time together...we were so silly and young. That was not even two years ago...
I remembered how Maxine had promised to come to ENMU for me..she wanted to be closer to me.
So many things flashed through my head during the two hours I sat there, I didn't realize the time went by before a nurse said nervously,"..ma'am..ma'am, are you alright?"
I looked up. She'd been asking for awhile.
"Yes." I simply replied.
"Your friend is alright, she got through surgery. But she's still in a critical condition. The doctor said if she makes it through the night with her inner injuries, she will be fine," she said.
"What room?" I asked, standing.
"406," she replied and I practically flew down the stairs. Seto met me in the corridor and walked with me the rest of the way.
"You arranged it so the rooms would be next to each other," I said. Not a question, a statement. He nodded.
"...thank you..." I whispered, entering the room where Maxine was. InuYasha was already there. He sat on the window sill, street lights shining on his silvery hair. He turned to look at me, speaking hoarsely,"...she hasn't woken up..."
"They think she'll be okay..." I said softly, walking towards the bed, looking at the small girl laying there. She looked so tiny. Her face was a ghostly pale and she had more tubes in her than it seemed her body could handle. A machine beeped steadily and a respirator hissed, making known she was on the edge of life, hanging on.
"...I told her I loved her, promised you'd come soon..." InuYasha said from the window sill, turning to look back out,"She worries about you, you know, Kim."
"What do you mean, InuYasha?" I asked with a sigh as I wrapped my hand around Maxine's. It felt so cold.
"She always has you on her mind, worrying about what you're doing, where you are...not in an over protective way..but in a good way. She cares alot."
"She cares for you, too, InuYasha."
"But there's still something between you two that makes her think of you over me, Kim." His voice was saddened, but steady.
"She loves you...don't doubt that..." I whispered, looking up. He nodded slightly,"I'd die for her, I live for her, breathe for her...I love her, Kim.." he whispered, lowering his eyes. Tears fell down his cheeks.
"...I know..." I whispered, looking back to Maxine, the respirator hissing. Her life hung in the air...
Meh...crappy. Another one soon, I promise.
