Bottle of Rum, Pills and Fate

Chapter 19: Escaping fates, running through the open door, the closed door and the chosen paths...

 

~Max's P.o.V.~

I had explained it to them, as best as I possibly could. And all of them had been horrifyed. It seemed like hours passed in silence. I drifted in and out of sleep as my head grew lighter and my ears pounded louder. My leg had grown numb and I couldn't even move it anymore. Much less wanted to feel pain. I knew I had to move but I had lost my own willpower to do so. Meg, Sarah and Kim were starting to whisper to each other and I just closed my eyes, blocking it out. "We have to get out of here..." Kim whispered to me, picking me up, Meg on my other side. Sarah was pushing herself through the mirror. "Let me go..." I said. "No, we won't leave you behind and you can't walk on that leg..." Meg replied, moving through sideways with me and Kim. "I saw it in my dream...Kim dies...then me...then you...then Sarah..." I whispered as we came back into the room with the white curtained doors,"This place...is a place of twisted death fates..." Kim looked at me,"Maxine Lisa...is this what you are going to go down to? After all we fought together...after standing up to everyone else and then it was just us, you are coming down like this?!" she yelled, tears in her eyes. I looked back at her,"It wasn't supposed to end this way..." I whispered so only she heard. "Then don't let it, don't give up..." she breathed, hugging me. I was a little girl again, her little sister,"I don't want anything to happen to you, Kim...I don't want anything bad to happen anymore...I don't want to hurt InuYasha because I love him and I don't want my friends to die...I don't want our fates to come true, not here..." I whispered. "Then let's escape these fates, let's escape this place," Meg said, kneeling down beside me and Kim. Sarah knelt down too, "...There's one door that's still open..." she said. "Then let's go," Meg said, putting her arm around me and propping me up on one side with Kim once again on my other side. Sarah opened the door and we all stepped through. We were in a room with what seemed to be televisions showing different things. Meg and Kim let me go and my gaze drifted to one of the T.V.'s...it was showing a home video from when I was at least 4 or 5. I was singing for my dad and smiling. A tear streaked down my face as I smiled slightly. "These are our fates..." Sarah whispered, stopping in front of four T.V.'s that were seperated from the others. Meg, Kim and me turned to look. They showed all of us in four seperate coffins being buried. Four headstones reading,'Loving mother, wife, child...and friend...no regrets, take nothing back...untill only a ghost remains...'

"Are those the fates you deserve...you...think you deserve?" a strange, but seemingly familiar voice said. All of us turned and looked at the face of all of our fears. For me it was Kagome, for Kim it was Serenity, for Meg it was Giselle and for Sarah it was Elizabeth. All in one person...but we all saw someone different. My breathing grew heavy and I spoke the question that was on all our minds,"Who are you..?" I whispered. The...thing in front of us smiled, a wicked smile, the kind that sent a shudder down spines and a young child cry. "I am...Fate..." the thing breathed, her voice changing...no her whole entire appearance changing for all of us. Her form shuddered as if she were a fuzzy television and she was suddenly a beautiful looking young woman with long hair that trailed down her back, reaching her ankles with her long white dress. When she opened her mouth however, her voice...which seemed like it would sing and be just as lovely as her appearance...was that of a horrid, wicked, evil person. It made us all cringe and flinch almost in fear. "You...have defeaten my rooms and now you must pay and change your fates or die...choose your paths wisely...what will you make your fates become?" she asked, smiling that smile at all of us as her gaze lingered on each of us momentarily. Immediately, my life seemed to flash in front of me. My wedding...with the three friends I was stuck here with as my bridesmaids and InuYasha...how he whispered to me at night and held me close when I cried over stupid things...

'Fate' looked at me and smirked,"You...are the reason all of you are here...because you had doubt...now your choice...will affect the others..." she breathed. I felt their gazes on me and looked at them. "I'll choose for them...and they'll go back...all three of them, back to their homes with their husbands...give them what they want..." I said. 'Fate' smiled and nodded,"It's done," she said and all of them disappeared, fading away. Another T.V. lit up and I looked at it. It showed Kim, Meg and Sarah just...appear, in the middle of an intersection. A car almost hit Meg and Kim and Sarah pulled her away to the sidewalk. "She will come near a lot of near deaths, that one...being a pirate...she'll sail the seas and come near a lot of dangers...but she'll pass away old and peacefully with lots of children and grand children...and a few great grand children..." 'Fate' said, smiling,"The other girl, Kim...she'll always be a rebel...and...she'll never lose you until...only a ghost remains I think...Sarah will be happy with her husband and she'll raise quite a few kids...none of them will swear..." she added with a slight grin. I looked at her,"And..?" I whispered. "And...you...have a choice to make..." she replied, crossing her arms,"Look at the screen..." she pointed towards a wall and I limped over, looking at the T.V. playing. It was InuYasha, sitting on Sarah's living room couch, his head in his hands. "He misses you...he actually loves you and...doesn't doubt," she said, walking up behind me,"So how about you?" I turned around and went past her, sliding down against a wall. "I choose him...I choose my friends and I choose the way it was before...without going back...just...renewing the past..." I whispered. She closed her eyes, smirking,"You were to die...in two years...lonely...and unhappy...and pretty fucked up..." she said bluntly, opening her eyes, smiling at me. I shuddered lightly, lowering my eyes,"Then...so be it...just don't hurt him...make him forget at least...don't let it hurt him or any of them..." I whispered. "Your fate is changed...don't come back again...or I promise you will die right away..." she whispered, walking to me and picking me up by the throat,"...goodbye..."

I woke up on a bus stop bench. I rubbed my neck and looked around as I opened my eyes. 'Fate'...wasn't as kind as I thought. At least I was still in Canada...I found that out only by looking at the week's old Victoria day party flyers in the over flowing trash bin next to the bench. Some homeless guy was rummaging around in it, completely ignoring me. I stood up and winced, looking down at my leg. My jeans were bloodstained. "Excuse me, are you alright ma'am? You look like you've been rolling about in a bad crowd, you probably need a ride eh?" a guy asked me. He was definately Canadian, he said 'aboot' and eh (Hah, I <3 Canadians!). "Um...no...I'll take the bus..." I said, sitting back down. He nodded and walked off. Then I thought better of it,"Or...wait! Do you have a cell phone I can borrow?" I asked. He smiled and nodded, walking back and handing over his cell phone. I dialed Sarah's house and Kim picked up. "Is InuYasha there?" I asked. "Where the hell are you, he's worried sick...Max, what happened to us?" she asked in reply. "I can't explain now...just give InuYasha the phone..." I said. "Maxine?" he said when he got the phone. "I'm sorry...I love you...heh, can you pick me up?" I asked. He laughed softly,"Sure...where are you..." he replied. I told him the street names and he promised to be there really soon. And he was. He stopped the car and ran to me, picking me up and twirling me like he used to, hugging me close, kissing me deeply. I kissed back this time. (cheesy? no...just...cue the:awwww...) "...ah, be careful...my leg..." I whispered. He helped me to the car and as much as I dis-liked it, we went to the hospital. We never left each other's sight. After a couple days, we went home, me with a cast to remind me for awhile of what happened. Meg went back to the Carribean and Kim went back home to Maine, Sarah stayed in Canada. It...was nearing the end of the summer...but we all realized...it wasn't completely back to normal.
