Reflections of the Past

Chapter 2

Yugi smiled sadly. Mitsurugi was just as his mother said he would be. "What's wrong?" Yami asked, peeking in on Yugi.

"Why do you have to barge in on everybody?!" Yugi yelled, upset.

"Get used to it, I'm here to stay. Even if you want me to leave, I've been to loyal to Mitsurugi-sama to abandon hi son.."

"Gee, thanks for the warning. I'll keep that in mind when I dump you off in a lake or summin' somewhere..." Yugi said sarcastically.

Yami laughed, the first time Yugi had seen him do so. "You're weird... Can you tell me more about what this Shadow Realm is like?"

"I would show you, but you'd be assaulted by it's magick the instant you set foot there. Demons and hanyous are especially influenced by the evil call of Shadow Magick. Humans have the most resistance, but still, there are few who can completely resist it. While I do realize why the elder priests did not want to have anything to do with Shadow Magick, that was no reason for them to excommuincate me... They knew I had the strength to..." Yami stopped talking when he heard Yugi snoring loudly.

Yugi had falledn asleep while Yami was talking. "I guess I talk too much..." he said to himself, chuckling. After Yami left, Yugi opened his eyes and looked up. "He talks way too much..."

Yami went to see Mitsurugi. "Yami, I never thought before this poison too hold of me that I would die of something so trivial. Yugi is a wonderful child, take care of him," Mitsurugi said, closing his eyes for the last time.

"Ano, Yami, where's Otousan?"

"Gomen nasai, Yugi, but..."

Yugi became silent. "Yugi-sama?" Yami asked, slightly worried.

"Please don't call me that."

"Gomen..."

Yugi helped Yami to burn Mitsurugi's body and make a small shrine. "Yami, take this to my mother. I'll stay here and look over the things that were left to me."

"Hai, Yugi-sama."

"I told you, don't call me that. Anything but sama..."

"... Hai, Yugi-kun," Yami smiled as he packed up the small shrine and left.

After Yami left, Yugi walked through what was left of the garden, kicking the blood-red ash that still mingled with the bleak gray ash of the grass and weeds burned along with the poison flowers. A few hours later, Yugi drew his sword, sensing that something was nearby. "Who's there?" he called, turning to face the forest.

A demon stepped out, his long black hair tied up and his fur clothing nearly hid the armor he wore underneath. "So, you're the new Demon Lord... I think it's ironic that the new Lord of the Northern Lands is a hanyou, don't you?"

Yugi was indifferent to the demon's taunting. However, when he moved to attack, Yugi surprised him by whirling around, a fireball surrounded by black lightning in his hands. "I don't think you like fire all that much, am I right?" Yugi said, hurling the electric fireball at his attacker.

The demon barely managed to leap aside in time, but the black lightning burned erratic scars on his arm. "What the hell kind of hanyou are you?!"

"I don't know, you tell me..." Yugi said, being quite honest while sounding sarcastic at the same time.

'Damn, that lightning-fire could kill someone... Namely me!' the demon thought. He was about to run when a white-haired figure grabbed ahold of him and a young monk came out of the forest. "So, Kouga, bothering innocent humans again, are you?" the monk said.

"Miroku, if that kid over there is a human, then so am I!" said the figure holding the demon.

"Idiots! Don't you know that this palace belongs to the Demon Lord of the Norhtern Lands? That kid is the former Lord's son!" Kouga informed the two.

"Demon Lord? Him? he'd hardly be a match even for you!" the figure, Inu-Yasha, laughed at Kouga's remark.

Inu-Yasha didn't even notice Yugi's lightning-fire until it was too late. Fortunately, Inu-Yasha's robes and the fact that Yugi held back the effort he put into the attack saved the white-haired hanyou's life. "What the hell was that for?!"

"You see those scars on his arm?" Yugi said, motioning towards Kouga, "My lightning-fire didn't even have to hit him to do that..."

It was, of course, at this point in time that Yami chose to come back. He blinked, then spotted Miroku. A glaring match between the two then followed. "So, Yami, still insisting on using Shadow magick?" Miroku asked in a none too friendly voice.

"Miroku, long time no see. Still as much of a lecher as when we last met, I suppose..." Yami replied in the same tone of voice.

"You didn't object when you found out I'd sleep with a man, given he was willing..." Miroku countered.

At that, Inu-Yasha turned pale. "That's disgusting! I always knew you were a pervert, but that's just wrong!"

Miroku and Yami were oblivious to Inu-Yasha's ranting. "And you never objected to playing a Shadow Game with me..." Yami countered back.

While this was going on, Yugi looke at Inu-Yasha, who was still holding Kouga. "Let him go, he's no threat to me. If my lightning-fire had hit him, he'd be dead right now..." Yugi said calmly.

"See ya later, then, wolf-boy..." Inu-Yasha said, throwing Kouga to the forest, and unintentionally hitting Yami.

Yami got knocked down, but was also knocked out in the process. "Inu-Yasha, I may not like Yami but that is no reason to knock him out..." Miroku said in a more-or-less indifferent tone of voice.

Yami looked around, his surroundings seeming vaguely familiar. "Welcome, Game King. I ask of you, join our council..." said a young man with spiky, snowy white hair and emerald green eyes, stepping out of the shadows.

Then it hit him! Yami was in the Shadow Realm! But what did the young man mean by 'council'? "Come now, Game King, three on a council is too few, and myself and my fellows are curious as to your thoughts. Our status is just below that of a god's. Join us and share that power. You've never lost a Shadow Game, and that has shown that you have the potential to be the leader of our coincil."

"I do not wish for power. I wish only to stay by Yugi, as I am obliged to do."

"You wish to bed with him, do you not?" said another man, stepping out of the shadows. Like the first, this one also had shockingly white hair. Though he was older, he retained a look of youth. "My, you are subborn, aren't you? Resisting our call to join us... Not many can resist the call out current leader puts forth through the Magick of the Shadows," the older man said nonchalantly.

Yami narrowed his eyes, suddenly realizing why their hair was so white: for the same reason his hair had been streaked with gold! Their true natures had been changed, and they were probably under the control of their 'leader'...

The older man laughed suddenly. "My dear boy, though your thoughts are on the right track, you have led yourself to a wrong conclusion. Myself and Bakura here are free to do as we wish, we are not under our leader's control, though he does have that power... In fact, the only reason he is currently the leader of our council is because he is the one who discovered the magick before either of us did. Hmm..." the man looked thoughtful for a moment. "We'll see you some other time, a pretty girl and your hanyou master are trying to wake your body up..."

~~~~~
Yami blinked. "Nani?! What hapened?"
"Inu-Yasha threw Kouga at you..." said a girl in odd clothing. "Oh, my name's Kagome, technically, I'm from a different time," the girl smiled brightly at Yami.
Another young woman was reading a book with surprisingly lifelike pictures in it. Yami's eyes widened when he saw a picture of the older man he met in the Shadow Realm. Yami grabbed the book and showed it to Kagome, figuring that it was from her time. "Who is this man?" he demanded.
"Nani? That's Pegasus J. Crawford, head of Industrial Illusions. Why do you ask?"
"This man is one of the 'Powers' of the Shadow Realm..." Yami stated simply.
MR: well, what do you guys think of that plot twist? ^^ I've got more surprises in store for you people! Wait for chapter 3 to come out soon!
