sacrifice

They didn't know how they did it, but somehow they found the way back to Naffinni's world with Kari safely in tow. She was fading fast from them, and when they placed her gently of Naffinni's bed, it occured to them how little time was left. Naffinni quickly brought out the things she needed by for what Yugi didn't know. Yami however seemed to know and was fearing it.

Naffini placed onto the silk sheets three items; a knife with the simple of life embedded in the blade, an oil burner that was already light and burn a very strong a foul smelling liquid, and finally a spell book. With out being told to Yami flipped threw the pages until he found the spell he needed wail Naffinni prepared.

"Yami?" Yugi asked timidly, afraid to disturb the once Pharaoh's concentration.

"Um?"

"What are you doing?"

"We are going to cast a spell," Yami answered and then realized how stupid answer it was. "It will make Naffini and Kari one of the same,"

"Aren't they already?"

"In a way, Yugi," Naffini answered for her husband. "Kari's soul is shattered. I'm going to play the part as the extra pieces to mend her again,"

"But that means both of you will..." Yugi whispered.

"Yes, little one," Naffini quickly pulled him into an embrace. "In a way both Kari and I will die, but we will be born again as one. It is the only way of saving her at all,"

"But what about Yami?"

"I knew that this would be the result," Yami answered coldly. The truth was it hurt him. It would be the second time he would lose he love, but this time, she would not return in a form that would remember him completely. "Kari will relieve both this and Naffini's life together and she'll remember what happened here,"

"Yami, we don't have much time," Naffini replied. She gave Yami one last kiss and then stripped of all her clothing and removed the remaining ribbons in Kari's skin.

The spell was complicated, as Yami spoke in his native tongue which Yugi understood nothing of. Naffini lay before Yami as he rose the dagger high above his head as he finished the incantation. He then looked down at his love with eyes the begged for forgiveness before he drove the dagger into her. There was no blood, merely a sort of fog the drifted from Naffinni and into Kari's limp form. Slowly the wounds closed and vanished as if they never were there to begin with. Kari appearance changed as well, she grow in height, as did her hair in length. She body began to look more feminine like as her bust grew more noticeable, but an Egyptian grown had already appeared cover cover her modesty. A moment pasted and there was nothing that remained of Naffini. Yami allowed a signal tear free itself from his eye. Naffini had made the greatest sacrifice that anyone could give, her life.

"Come Yugi," Yami replied as he lightly brushed a stray hair from Kari's face. "It's time to go back,"

Doctors tried desperately to force a heart beat out of the limp girl's body but weren't gaining any. Finally one suggested that they were to inject a substance into her heart to make it beat again, when it returned on it's own. The eye lips of the girl opened slowly as she looked at her surroundings.

"Where am I?" She asked softly looking at the people around her. 'Am I dying?'

"You are at Hikaru Hospital, Ms. Motachi," A grizzly looking doctor informed her.

"Mo... Motachi?" She asked looked bewildered. "Is that my name?"

"Sweet heart," A woman on her right asked. She had blood on her cloth and face. "What do you remember? How far back?"

"I..." She started but stopped short. Everything seemed so far away, distant and blurry, like looking threw a window where a heavy rainstorm was constantly beating down on it. Other then the present, she could recall nothing. "I only remember waking up just now,"

"Hmmm," An other doctor rubbed his chin. She couldn't tell what he looked like, his face was in the way of a bright light. "Ms. Kyoshi? Please inform Mr. Seto Kaiba that his sister, Kari, has gained consciousness and is stabilizing,"

"Yes sir," A woman replied before Kari fell back into a peaceful painless slumber.

The next day seemed rather strange for everyone. Mokuba was told the next day what happened and that everyone was going to visit Kari before school. Kari however felt so uneasy and guilty as everyone joined her in small sterilized room. Doctor Doh Lee explained that she was suffering a lose of memory and it would most likely remain that way. He told them fermly that none of them were to force her to remember what had happened for it may be too painful or horrifying for her to remember. They spent most of the time reintroducing each other and explaining what their friendship was like. Kari smiled kindly when Yami and Yugi entered the room as well.

"Yami," She spoke before anyone could. It cause everyone to be surprised that she remembered him, including Kari.

"You remember me?" He asked.

"Not really," She started to blush softly. There was an image in her mind that appeared. She saw herself hold him hands with a ring on her finger. There were flower peddles falling from the sky and he kissed her. The only difference was that they were wearing strange clothes. "It just came to me. Maybe I'm remembering what happened,"

"Maybe, until then this is Yugi," Yami pushed his lighter self in front of him and introductions continued. He then watched as Kari was reintroduced to Duel Monsters.

'So she doesn't recall everything,' He thought and gave a soft laugh. 'It's all for the better I'm sure. Hopefully this time she'll have a better start. Away from the past and maybe the scares she carries will manage to heal a little more then before. Only time will tell,'

"Hey Yami!" Kari called from her bed holding her cards high. "I think I remember this! Wanna play against me?"

"Sure, but I must warn you," Yami grinned. "I'm awfully hard to defeat,"

"Then I'll just have to try won't I," Kari grinned happily. Yami felt his heart warm. It was a real smile, Kari's smile. A smile none of them had seen for over a month, and it was one of the most beautiful things they had seen in what felt like a long time.
