The sun burned brightly in the sky in the mid afternoon. Not much time had passed since the arrival of the two strange women. But, people worked and went on with their lives as if nothing was wrong and most had forgotten about it.
Life seemed to be going on, as always, except in the imperial palace. It was there that things appeared to be different. Kayla was to get cleaned up and orders were also given for her to be treated for her burn marks on her skin.
This process took several hours, as it always did. However, the pharaoh didn't like the wait. While he had it done, many things had run through his mind. The most frequent, however, was something along the lines of, :: Is she all right? :: He kept asking himself this over and over again. It made it hard for him to concentrate.
Somehow, he was drawn to her. But he didn't understand why. He didn't believe in love at first sight, but he was beginning to second-guess himself.
His advisers had thought he had gotten ill and insisted that he lie down and take a rest, but he ignored their advice and tried to finish out the day. ::What is it about this girl that makes her so special? I can't seem to get her out of my mind… I keep feeling like some form of magic connects us. :: he thought as he listened to someone rambling on about something going on in the country, not really paying it as much mind as he was supposed to.
Once he had a free moment he stopped in to check on her. His servants had finished up with her and she seemed to be lying comfortably in a warm bed, which she had been placed on. He walked to the head servant and asked, "Will she be alright?"
The noted servant bowed in respect and looked back replying, "Yes my lord… She appears to be worn out from her travels and is resting."
The pharaoh nodded and walked over to the snoozing Kayla and sat at her side. He looked her over while she slept, thinking the whole time :: What is so special about you, huh… well I aim to find out… until then I will make sure nothing happens to you… :: he thought to himself, gazing at her sleeping form.
He had to resist the temptation to pick her up and hold her close in his arms, because, for one, she might not like it, and another, it wasn't like he was free to do as he pleased as many people were led to believe. He sighed and stood, but something inside of him told him that leaving wasn't the smartest thing to do. He sighed quietly to himself and returned to his post by Kayla's side.
About an hour later, Kayla awoke with a groan. She rubbed her eyes and blinked them several times. She felt a soft hand on her shoulder and she moved to make a desperate attempt to look the person in the eye, knowing full well that wouldn't be as easy as it appeared to be. She yawned and didn't try to move as a soft, powerful , but at the same time, gentle voice reached her ears, telling her that it was ok to relax and asked her if she was all right.
Hearing this made Kayla remember how it used to be before she lost her parents and she wanted the feeling she got from him to stay. To his question, she nodded slowly, not really wishing to speak at the moment.
"That's good." He replied, helping her to lie back down again, knowing that was the best for her right now.
"Thank you…" Kayla whispered in a weak voice, cracking a smile once again.
"You're welcome, milady. Now, how about I get you something to eat? You must be starved after your travels, and it will do you some good to eat something." Yami suggested to Kayla, whom nodded.
"I am not a big eater normally… tho, you do have a point. I should attempt to eat something if I am going to get anywhere." She replied in agreement.
Yami smiled and called one of his servants to bring them a small meal. He smiled and waited at Kayla's side while the task was being performed. When the servant returned, Yami took the food from him and placed it in front of Kayla before helping her to sit up so as not to hurt her back any more then it already was. She smiled and slowly reached for it, thankful to get something down her for once in her life. For as long as she could remember, being that her eating was not the best in the world, she often refused food.
After Kayla had been fed and had something to drink, Yami smiled and helped her lie down again and made sure she wasn't stuck on her back. Learning early on that not only was it painful for her, but that she appeared to be having breathing problems the one time she ended up on it.
"Why not try and get some more sleep?" Yami suggested to her.
"Thanks again and I will." Kayla replied softly as she closed her eyes and snuggled deep with in the sheets and blankets. It didn't take her to long to fall asleep once again and she sure needed it.
Once again, while Yami watched over her, his mind drifted. He didn't know why, but he couldn't get her out of his mind.
:: Do I really believe in love at first sight, or am I starting to? :: he kept asking himself over and over again. He dismissed everyone in the room again, wanting time to himself with Kayla and also, of coarse, to sort his thoughts.
When he was alone, he smiled down at the sleeping girl in the bed. He hated the laws, even though he was the one to set them. He also right now disagreed with most of the beliefs. Slowly, he began to stroke her hair softly and smiled when she let out a content sigh.
Kayla felt the gentle touch of Yami's hand against her and smiled in her sleep. She missed those feelings terribly and sometimes it brought tears to her eyes. But this time, it didn't. She felt comforted by it, like someone knew just who to send her to get what she needed. She prayed it wasn't a dream and that she wouldn't wake up and discovered that it was a dream and would no longer feel the comforting touch. She felt at that very moment.
For several hours, Kayla slept on, not once bothered by her painful past. She smiled while she slept, feeling the touch against her skin. She smiled once more and turned over in her sleep so that her back was to him. He smiled and took a moment to massage it, knowing and hoping that she might enjoy it, in which she did.
A few times, his servants interrupted Yami. However, he didn't want to leave Kayla alone in fear she might wake up and not remember a thing. Or so that is what he told himself and anyone who chose to attempt to bother him.
However, Yami's mind was far from those thoughts. He didn't know what to think do or say.
:: Am I falling in love with someone I just met? :: He asked himself time and time again, unable to shake the feeling .
A while later, Kayla began to stir once more from her second nap. The sun had gone down and the coldness of the desert had set in. She pulled the blankets tightly around her in attempt to keep herself warm. Yami saw this and pulled another blanket around her.
"Sleep well? Want or need anything?" he asked once he saw her truly awake. The entire time he spoke, he kept the soft gentleness that Kayla had come to know and like.
"Nothing for me, thanks." She said quietly as she sat up more, pulling the blankets around her body tightly.
Yami smiled and nodded as he looked into her eyes. She had yet to tell him she was blind, but he didn't appear to care. He just wanted to watch over her and make sure she was safe and sound. In that moment, as he gazed into her eyes, which appeared to be moving around a lot, he knew he must have fallen in love. But at the same time, it hurt because he knew that his people wouldn't accept something like that.
Seto, on the other hand, was showing signs of having similar feelings as he watched Jenna sleep. He wanted her to recover and feel better. He had tons of work to do and for the first time in his life, he put it off . He looked over at Jenna, whom started to shiver shortly after sunset, due not only to the dramatic change in temperature, but her natural low blood pressure and poor circulation. Both did not help the other but to make Seto's task of getting her warm again a nearly impossible task.
:: I am smart, right? I can figure it out… but why am I trying so hard to make sure she is all right? :: he thought as he mixed some herbs in a container to try and help circulate her blood.
The insomnia that Jenna also suffered from made its presence known a few minutes after Seto had begun his task for finding a way to heat up her cold clammy skin and stop her constant shivering. She smiled as she stirred and sat up, looking around the room.
The past few hours had been a complete blur for her and she had difficulty recalling what had happened or where she was. Her cheeks turned a bright red when memory hit her and she saw Seto. But what made her blush was when she could see him, his deep blue eyes were looking directly in hers.
:: No way he is actually looking me in the eye… :: she thought as she turned away and tried to burry her face in her blankets. Seto smiled when he saw this.
"It's alright Jenna, don't worry about anything, okay?" he said in a reassuring manner.
"Sure?" Jenna asked in a soft tone, thinking thousands of things. The most present on her mind was that someone whom didn't even know her and it only been a few hours already hated her
since they met. But yet, she recalled he had saved her life. However, she had tons of doubt in her still due to her past, one she couldn't easily forget.
"You have no reason to question me, I am not going to hurt you. I am not that kind of person, I swear it." Seto promised, making sure his tone didn't change and it remained soothing as he helped her drink one more of his special mixtures.
"Thank you for saving my life and taking care of me like this." Jenna replied once she had nothing in the cup she was given to drink out of. "And I promise not to question you again, I am sorry." She added looking at the empty cup in her hands.
"It's alright, everything will be fine. I will take care of everything." Kaiba reassured when it appeared that Jenna still showed signs of doubt.
"Okay, if you say so." Jenna said with a depressed tone in her voice, one that she used quite often.
Seto simply shook his head back and forth and sighed, not knowing what to do but wait for her to trust him. He guessed from Jenna's actions that he might be waiting a long time and that she didn't trust anyone. But for some odd reason, this didn't bother him and he felt he could wait forever for her if needed.
:: I can't be in love… :: he thought to himself. But it was true. He had fallen in love with her, or so it seemed, because, except for his brother or his lord, he wouldn't be this patient. He was only like that because he risked losing his head was he patient around the pharaoh.
Jenna smiled when he appeared to be kind to her like her best friend Kayla was, but she still had to wonder how long it had to last. There were times when she thought Kayla was going to crack. However, she proved herself time and time again to be a loyal friend and the first loyal friend Jenna had ever had. Other people Jenna had a reason not to trust, and she felt especially indifferent towards boys, only because of the fact they had hurt her so much.
However, this one was different. She had a crush on him and knew his persona to be that of a cold-hearted jerk to everyone except his brother, but she was seeing a side of him she really hadn't seen before.
:: Was he really like this in the past and I am making a big deal over nothing? :: she thought, yawning and smiling.
"You look like you will recover nicely. Some more rest and a good meal should do it for you." Seto said, looking at Jenna, whom had appeared to be recovering nicely and had gotten some color back in her skin. He checked her pulse and it appeared to have slowed down quite a bit, which meant it was getting back to normal.
"Thanks to you, I feel much better as well. Thank you, Seto." Jenna said, sounding much happier and a whole lot stronger then she did when she first arrived.
When the cold night air hit her skin, she shivered slightly and covered her up with a blanket. Seto offered her another one with a smile and suggested she sleep for the rest of the night. Jenna lay down, agreeing with him, but at the same time, she kept thinking, :: If I can that is… ::
Once Jenna had fallen asleep again, Seto smiled. He watched over her for several hours, slowly stroking her back and hair. It shocked her to feel it, but like Kayla, Jenna longed for that feeling. She let out a content sigh as a thought entered her mind, :: Please don't let this be a dream, and if it is, please, don't let me wake up … ::
"You're safe and sound here…" Seto whispered softly with a smile as if he could read Jenna's worried-filled mind.
Hearing this, Jenna smiled, knowing that she was in fact safe once more.
