Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Absence of Color ❯ Familiarization ( Chapter 8 )
[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
Sorry for the long delay everyone. I've been busy with summer homework and lessons and stuff. Well here's the next chapter. This one will focus mostly on Yami getting to know his new friends.
---
"Luke is my younger brother. Damn little genius who graduated along with me." Blaine wrapped his arm around Luke's neck ruffling his hair.
"Hey! Let me go!"
Everyone laughed at their little play fight.
"How did he?" Yami asked
"I...I skipped 2 grades catching up to my bro." Luke was still trying to break out of his brother's grip.
"We all graduated together. We've known each other quite a long while actually." Saij walked beside Yami.
"Hey man, you seem like a cool guy, wanna hang out with us? I mean, you don't have to we've just met you."
Yami, pondered the question but for some reason he liked this new "group."
"Sure I'll go with you guys. I'm new here and don't know anyone yet."
"Great! We'll split a pizza and you can tell us more about yourself."
"A'ight"
In his mind, Yami felt a certain singe of fear. He was in a foreign country, didn't know anyone, left his whole past behind, and was alone. Or rather, with these new people, he wasn't alone anymore. Now that he met them, they could become his new friends. He could make a new life for himself.
---
They reached a pizza parlor which was in a park next to a bay. Across, you could see the New York Skyline. Yami looked in awe at the view. It was amazing.
He leaned against a railing looking at the water, and the ships passing by. Next to him was Luke.
"So, where you from?"
"Japan."
"WOW!"
Yami was startled by his outburst.
"That's so cool man! I've always wanted to go to Japan! I think it's awesome."
"Maybe you'll go someday."
Everyone else joined them and they sat down at a table to eat. They introduced themselves in more depth. --- Luke was 16 and Blaine's younger brother. He was pretty smart, and also looked like a free spirit. His long hair probably accounted for it. Blaine was 19 and had been caring for his brother ever since their dad died. Their mom held two jobs and was pretty good at it.He had short hair no longer than an inch.
Saij was 19 also and was the spitting image of Jounouchi which scared Yami when he saw him. The only difference was that Saij was more serious, taller, and his voice was deeper. Other than that, the clothes, the hair and the face were the same.
Finally, there was Eli. He was 19 also but seemed older than everyone else. He was quiet, and looked older than everyone else. He didn't talk much about himself.
Luke started talking to Yami.
"So, Yami what's your story?"
"I just came here from Japan. I...left."
"That's it? No family?"
"Well...I got a younger brother. Lie...ah what's it gonna hurt? Some, ex-friends. "
Yami remembered he had a picture in his wallet. It was taken right after he split his body from Yugi.
"Ex? Ouch. What happened?"
Yami passed the picture around.
"I don't know. I Yugi got tired of me 'taking over' his life as he called it. Everyone else just followed along."
"Yugi? That's the kid with hair like yours right?" Blaine examined the photo.
"Yea, here... " Yami leaned in with them as he pointed out people on the picture.
"That's Jounouchi, and his sister Shizuka. Next to him is Honda, who likes Shizuka. Then that's Marik and his brother Malik, Bakura and his brother Ryou. That's Isis Marik's and Malik's brother. Otogi, who also likes Shizuka. Mai, who's Joey's girlfriend, then that's Tea..."
"Whoa! Is that Seto Kaiba the CEO of Kaiba Corp?" Luke pointed at Seto on the picture.
"Yea, he's dating Shizuka."
"Man, I can't believe you where friends with Seto Kaiba."
Yami thought about the statement. "Friend" probably wasn't the word Kaiba was calling him at that point. Maybe something around "idiot," "asshole," or the other 20 plus insults that Kaiba hurled at him in the past years that he knew him.
"Well if you left them just like that, things must have gotten bad." For the first time, Luke's voice was quiet.
Yami touched his cuff with his hand. He could feel the wound in his wrist.
"You could say that. I just wanted to leave."
"Ah well...We all make our choices and then we deal with the consequences." Eli sounded like he had experience in the topic.
"Well, I don't know about you guys but I'm tired."
Luke put his head down on the table and yawned. Blaine smacked him upside the head.
"What was that for?"
"You always tired to stop and try to think about others who aren't."
Luke scoffed and laid his head back down.
"I got an idea." Saij looked over at Yami.
"Why not we go to the park and chill. Some of us can sit around and chat, or walk around, and Luke can sleep under a tree."
"And when he wakes up it I'll be thirty years later." Blaine laughed at his own remark.
"In case you haven't noticed, my name aint Rip Van Winkle." Luke spoke into the table but loud enough so that everyone heard him.
"And 'aint' isn't a word" Blaine corrected his brother.
"Shut up..." He continued to talk into the table, and Blaine smacked him again.
"That's fine with me. Maybe you guys could familiarize me on the surroundings." Yami looked over towards Saij.
"Cool man."
Blaine picked up his brother by the shoulders and forced him to stand up. They pushed eachother around and Blaine continued to annoy Luke by ruffling his hair. Yami chuckled in at the sight. Ruffling Luke's hair seemed to be Blaine's gesture of affection towards his brother. Those two could be just like Kaiba and Mokuba. The only difference was that Blaine was actually affectionate towards his brother and not cold-hearted like Seto. Sometimes he wondered if Kaiba ever told his brother that he loved him or sat down to play with him. He was always with his machines and duel monsters cards.
Yami shook his thoughts out of his head and followed the others towards the park area. There where people there looking at the water, some sleeping under the afternoon sun, or playing games. They picked a spot and sat down. Luke immediately fell backwards and closed his eyes.
"No one talk to me."
Blaine chuckled and ruffled Luke's hair.
Saij and Eli walked over by the water leaving Blaine and Yami alone to talk.
"So Yami, how long have you been dueling?"
"A while. Don't remember when I started."
"I've been dueling since 9th grade. I taught Luke when he was in 8th. When I was in 10th I met Saij and Eli and we sorta formed our little clan, training each other and going to competitions together. We've become pretty tight. Almost like brothers.
"Have you guys ever won?"
"Eh...Saij, Luke and I aren't that good. Eli's the best one of all of us. He loved dueling...it was his passion. In fact, last year he made it to the finals against Samano."
"He did?"
"Yea...it was a hard duel for him..." Blaine trailed off.
"What happened?"
"Well, the platforms for dueling were...medieval you could say. They were raised up high off the ground. The duel was about to end. Both had 200 life points. Eli was sort of in a bind because he needed a strong monster to win. Also, both had three cards in his hand. Samano had Luster Dragon on the Field and no trap cards while Eli had 4 trap cards and two monsters in defense mode. He desperately needed a high level monster to sacrifice and win the duel. The card he drew was Card Destruction. He figured that he could get Buster Blader and win the duel. He played it, but got no cards to help him. He ended his turn...which would be his last. In his attempt to get his favorite card, he unknowingly helped Samano win the duel...he drew Heavy Storm and Raigeki and Dragon Treasure. It was all over. Eli stood there motionless and accepted his defeat...he hadn't lost up until that point and it didn't help that Samano was just standing there gloating over his victory and preaching that he had won...Eli was so lost that he didn't hear when Samano declared the attack – it caught him off guard and he fell backwards hitting his head on the ground. At the hospital, when he was handed back his deck and looked through it, and it was still in the same order as when he left it...the next card he would have drawn if he had waited one more turn...would've been Buster Blader."
Yami was stunned by the anecdote.
"That's so sad."
"He hasn't been the same since then. He's...quieter, not that he's never been that way because he's always been serious. Even we don't know that much about his life...he won't tell us. But ever since that accident...it's hard to get through to him."
"Does he still duel?"
"No...he...how can I say it...it's like with some people who get in car accidents. They're afraid of driving for a while because they don't want to get in another accident. I think that's the way with Eli. He's scared."
“Why does he carry a duel disk?”
“I don’t know. I think it’s dumb. Fashion statement...You know how some people carry a cane when they don’t need one. Or...maybe it’s like a security blanket.”
Yami looked over at Eli standing next to Saij. He certainly didn't look like the person who was afraid of anything or needed anything for security; he was so stern and focused. But like him, there are many things that one can hide and not reveal to anyone; whether it is for the sake of friendship or sanity. Maybe Eli didn't want his friends to worry about him, or burden them with his problems. So, he just made like had had none.
Yami thought about when he used to duel back home. Like Eli, dueling was his passion. He was unstoppable defeating any opponent that stood in his way. And, by way of dueling he had even made some new friends. Who knew that it could make someone hate you for it? It wasn't his fault he won all those duels. He didn't even know what the big deal was. Everyone knew that "Yugi Mouto" was the "Duelist Kingdom" and "Battle City" Champion. If Yugi really wanted to feel like he won those duels then he should have dueled in place of Yami. And after all he went through for him with the Doom Organization.
"Selfish bastard."
Maybe that would be one of the perks to leaving: making a name for himself in dueling.
"Yami Mouto: the United States Duel Monsters Champion."
It had a nice ring to it. He would be a champion by his own two shoes and his own strategies. And, if "Yugi Mouto: The Battle City Champion" ever wanted to beat him and claim his title for himself, then he would have to come and find him himself.
