Dreizhen: And so it continues. Ch. 1 and 2 are the farthest I got on this fanfic before I stopped. But I'm gonna try and get back on track soon.

Why do those who choose to do everything that seems right end up being the ones in pain the most?

“Man, this night air is so cool! Much different from a hot apartment room, don't ya think?” Ryou said sweetly, stretching his arms up in the air, smiling. The others looked at him and laughed a little, faking it. Ryou ran ahead, dancing around under the street lights like a flightless bird that could only hope to go as high before its' wings were clipped away.

“He's been...mumbling things since he came to our house. Like he's wailing inside almost.” Malik whispered. Yami looked away sadly and down at Yugi, who only looked at his feet. “Bakura has been harming him drastically lately, from what I can tell.”

“Well a wound can tell a thousand words, especially in this case. What has gotten into him?” Marik grumbled, cuddling Malik under his shoulder.

“The tomb robber's lost his mind. Who would even think of harming someone like Ryou, who has never done anything but to please you because he loves you? It's so...despicable.” Yami said, clenching his teeth.

“Especially when some people go to such...extreme measures. Like giving everything they hold dear and still not being enough for that person?” Yugi said, looking up to Ryou. Yami bit his lip and squeezed Yugi's hand tightly, letting one tear escape.

“Oh, we're here! Guys, come on! This place is great!” Ryou said, waving to the four. Yugi looked at him and faked a smile.

“Wait up, Ryou! Don't start the fun without us!” he said, running up to catch up with Ryou, losing his grip with Yami, who watched him run, saddened. Malik nodded to Marik who replied.

“Wait for me you two!” Malik yelled and ran with the two into the place. Marik and Yami watched them go and stood outside the place for awhile, looking up at the moonless sky.

“Pharaoh, you should know first hand what will happen if Bakura keeps this up, don't you?” Marik mumbled. Yami did not look at him and nodded solemnly, “Do you think that we might have to…?”

“Yes, we just might. But right now, I just want to give those three some peace in their minds, so let's just keep the thought to ourselves, shall we?” Yami said, glancing at him. Marik nodded and walked in, Yami following, turning for a moment and gazing at the sky, then walking in.

“Hey Yami! Marik! We're over here!” Ryou called, ushering them over. Yami made a weak smile and walked over. Yugi sat there, trying to seem happy and excited, but Yami could see right through it-he was sad and scared-something Yami had seen many times before.

“So what do you want to do now, Ryou?” Malik asked, perking up the conversation. Ryou thought for a moment then pointed over to the karaoke machine.

“Let's do that! Bakura used to love it...when I...” Ryou suddenly became quiet and looked down at the table. Yugi noticed a small drop slosh on the table and looked to see Ryou, about to cry. Then he wiped them away and took Yugi by the hand, “Well, come on!”

“Oh, okay then. I'll go over there with Ryou. Be back in a minute.” Yugi said to Yami, who nodded.

“I'll go with you two. I'm gonna get something to drink while you two sign up. That okay?” Malik asked. Marik nodded and so he walked off with the two. Marik and Yami sat down, watching them. Then Yami noticed a familiar face over by the bar.

“It's Mai...” he mumbled. Marik heard him and looked over. Although her back was turned, her clothes and hair made her stick out as always. “I'm going to go speak with her. Watch the three of them.” Marik nodded and Yami got up and walked over. “Hello Mai.” Mai perked up and turned to face Yami.

“Hey there. Didn't think I'd see you around a place like this. Want something to drink?” she asked, while drying some wine glasses. Yami shook his head and sat down at the bar. “Something the matter, love?”

“It's...well, there's been a lot going on right now. With Yugi and Ryou and Bakura. It all seems like just too much. I just don't know what to do right now. Tell me, you see him more than me. How is Jou these days?” he asked. Mai looked at him, puzzled, then turned away still drying a glass.

“That's something to hear about coming from you. I'd think you would be the last person who would want to hear about him. I know he's tried to call Yugi many times before. Why do you never let him talk to him and yet, wonder about him?” Mai asked.

Yami turned away , guilty, “Because, I want to know if he's gotten better or worse. That's all.”

“Well he's doing much better. With Shizuka and I around him of course. He's not having those problems anymore, but I don't think that he can truly be healed until he can be forgiven by the one whom he hurt most, dontcha think?” she turned to Yami. He nodded and glanced to see Yugi, Ryou, and Malik on stage singing with Marik watching. “I didn't see those three. I can tell Yugi's still having a hard time. But Ryou...he looks different too.”

“It's Bakura. He's been abusing Ryou, but Ryou won't do anything about it. I just don't know what I should do. It's so painful.” Yami said, burying his head between his shoulders. Mai sighed and managed a smile.

“There's a lot you can do. It was you who saved Yugi of course. So I'm sure you can save Ryou too. So just do the best you can and follow your heart.” she said. Yami nodded and waved good-bye as he made his way back to the table where the three had returned.

“That was so much fun! We should go back up later and do it again!” Ryou smiled as he drank his soda. Yugi nodded and turned to see Yami returning.

“Where were you? I was looking for you while we were up there.” Yugi said, puzzled and out of breath.

“I saw Mai over at the bar counter so I decided to go chat with her. She said everything was going well with-well you know who.” Yami said, sitting down next to him. Yugi nodded solemnly and drank his drink as well.

Later on the group decided it was time to go and the group went their separate ways. “Bye Yugi and you too, Yami!” Ryou waved as he walked off with Marik and Malik back towards their apartment. Yugi waved and Yami managed a small wave. As the three were walking away, Marik turned and gave an odd glance at Yami, who nodded then took Yugi's hand and headed back to their house at the game shop.

“What was that all about? Something I shouldn't know about?” Yugi asked as they got to the door. Yami didn't reply but walked inside with him following. He went up the steps and sat down on the couch, deep in thought, “Yami, what is it?” Yugi sat down next to him and went to clasp his hand. But before he could, Yami put his arms around him and pulled him into his arms.

“Yugi, I think it's time that you faced Jou and got this all over with. Mai says it's the only way that he can truly be healed.” Yami said bluntly. Yugi shot up a glance of fear and shock at him then turned away.

“No I can't. I can't do that. I can't forgive him for what...” Yugi began to curl up into a ball, “for what he did to me. No, never.” Yami watched him and sighed, patting him softly and uncurling him into his arms. Yugi cried and Yami cooed him to soothe him. Soon, Yugi fell into sleep from the stress and Yami carried him to bed. Afterwards Yami sat and pondered.

“Will we really have to go that far? Agh, I just don't know.” Yami sighed as he laid back on the couch looking to the roof. “I just don't know.”
