Author's Note: This is my first songfic that I actually like. Please review! I really love this song. It's one of the greatest I've ever heard. Very sad though. The person in here is sort of a mystery, you can let it be whoever you want it to be.


I hear the ticking of the clock

Anzu was lying on her bed, staring up at the dark ceiling as the night bore on. The room was lit up every few seconds by the fireworks filling the sky outside, celebrating the coming of the new year. The year 2004 was just misery, with 2004 miserable things waiting to happen.


I wonder where you are tonight
No answer on the telephone


She rolled over on the bed and reached for the telephone. She picked it up and dialed the first six parts of his phone number. Her finger froze over the last one.
"He's not going to answer. Why bother?"
She clunked the phone back to its holder and closed her eyes.


And the night goes by so very slow
Oh I hope that it won't end though

"I wonder where he is tonight. Probably with Mai, or Serenity. Or both. I just know… he's not with me. The closest he'll probably ever get to me is in my heart."

Ever since the day she had heard his voice, she had been in love. His sweet smile melted her every time she saw it. Anzu smiled to herself as she pictured him in her mind.


And now it chills me to the bone

She had hoped that one day he would be hers. That maybe, just maybe, at the chime of midnight, she would be sharing a wonderful kiss with him. He had complimented her once on her perfume…just once. Three empty bottles of it were now lying around her room. She had worn it every day for him, but he had yet to notice again.

A small tear trickled down her cheek as she thought of all the futile times she had tried to get his attention. No matter what she did anymore, it was no use. She just….wasn't for him.

It was too late now. He had shattered her heart more than anyone could imagine. The Shikon No Tama could not compare to the shatters Anzu's heart was in. A thousand broken mirrors still could not compare.


But the secret is still my own
and my love for you is still unknown

Alone Anzu had been born. Alone she had grown up. And alone was her heart now, aching. What was there to live for? What cruelity had set her destiny to be so….alone? Why was she even alive?!
