This is the side story to Hope for the Desert Flower; however it can be read alone without any problem whatsoever. Incidentally, someone challenged me to do the prequel of Yami and Bakura's past together with the side story I was thinking of doing so I'm going to do it but I'll also do a separate prequel for Yami and Bakura and this is a separate side-story, alright? You see, I could never pass up a challenge, not even an implied one.
Also here I'm trying to make Yugi more human and less the savior of the world, until this story is finished (no offence) the world can take care of itself.
This is the new version of this story, 1.1, alright? I redid it because I made some very amateurish mistakes. Fault's completely mine…I should get a beta….
A piece of advice to all yaoi writers, next time you get a flame because you are an yaoi writer just remind yourself that the person who flamed you probably thinks that you're an danger to het writers, its flattering really, how much they care.
So here's the story of Jou, Seto and Yugi -

We start this human drama in the upper story of a shop, more specifically the Kame Game Shop, which also doubled as a house for the Mutou family.
There lay on his bed in one of the rooms, a boy with tri-colored haired and violet eyes full of life. At this moment however the boy was trying to figure out the meaning of life “Very philosophical,” most people would say and be deeply impressed, and most people would be wrong. This is a stage most teens and preteens go through, the fact of the matter is that the boy on the bed, Yugi Mutou was crossed in love.
He was gay and confused, he felt that he was in love with two people at once, not to mention that one of the two was his best friend and the other his rival and I'm sure you'll agree with me that this is as serious as love problems get. Yes, Yugi certainly had a lot of love problems. It was ten o' clock in the night though, so he would escape to dreamland soon. Not that it would be much help because he was at not-so-sweet sixteen and, as anyone who has passed through that stage will tell you, there is no escaping desire even in dreamland.
In fact, it might just enhance all your feelings, physical ones included. And that was exactly what happened when Yugi fell asleep a few minutes later. We can't see his dreams I'm afraid, only the outcome, which was him waking up an hour or so later with a thin sheen of sweat on his brow and nearly crying from a common feeling, sexual frustration. After which he fell asleep only to wake up again at seven o' clock when his alarm went off, a sad fact of life being that even sexually frustrated teens must go to school or face the consequences.
He trudged to the bathroom, and spent a half-hour in there, most of it he spent waking up from the deep trance-like state between sleep and complete awareness (A strange fact of life is that some people can go through life completely in this state, in fact if they could have been bothered they could probably have fine-tuned it into an art) the rest ten minutes was all it took for him to bath and get ready. Unlike what some people thought Yugi never had to use either gel or coloring on his hair, it was just that way. He sat beside his other half who was trying to finish some homework, “Why didn't you do your homework last night, Yami?”
Yami finally finished whatever he was scribbling, “I was playing video games last night”
Yugi chuckled and tried to cover it up, but it didn't work, “What's so funny?” Yami inquired
“Well, its just that a few days ago you were calling the games a…what was it again...`a confounded contraption whose sole purpose is to irritate people' and a few things in Egyptian that would be worth translating I'm sure” Yugi teased
“Well, I changed my mind” Yami shrugged good-naturedly
“That's like you changed your mind about hating Bakura and are sleeping with him”
“Very funny” Yami rolled his eyes
“I never said it was a joke,” Yugi countered smiling
“Let's go or we'll be late”
The two finished their breakfast and in a leisurely way walked straight to school, usually on Wednesdays (like today) they didn't wait for the others. For various reasons all except Yami and Yugi had some job to do before going to school. They reached school in time and with time left before their class. They walked up till Yami's homeroom which was closer then Yugi said goodbye to him and started walking to his own.
He suddenly remembered that he had left the books for his second class in his locker. He checked his watch and realized he would have to be fast if he didn't want detention. He started running towards his locker, his eyes were on his books which was probably why he didn't notice the person in front of him and crashed into him. He lost his balance and nearly fell, but the other person grabbed him and steadied him. Yugi dared to peep up through his blonde bangs; it was Seto Kaiba he had crashed into. Oh God! Whichever one it was that he had angered. “Mutou?”
“Yes?” peeped Yugi
“Are you…I'm late!” Seto said, suddenly changing the sentence.
He let Yugi go. “You'd better get to class” he added carelessly
Yugi looked after him for a moment, wondering what Seto was about to say, “What am I thinking? He would never say that!” because Seto Kaiba was the rival that Yugi had fallen for.
Yugi checked his watch and ran for his life; he stepped into his class gasping and panting just a split second before the teacher. His best friend, yes his other crush, smiled at him sympathetically from a chair near the back. He went and sat beside him. As soon as the teacher's head was turned, Jou whispered, “What happened to you? You're never late!”
“I went to get a book and tripped on someone” Yugi whispered back
Jou looked at him disbelievingly, “That's why you nearly got into detention?”
“It may sound weird but that really is why I'm late”
Jou shrugged in a non-committal way. As soon as the teacher finished homeroom the two stood up and went together to their next class. That class passed thankfully without mishap. But when Yugi had sat down in his second class for the day, Chemistry, he remembered with a groan that after colliding with Seto he had forgotten to take his book out. He retreated to the darkest corner of the room in the hopes that his teacher wouldn't notice.
It was only later that he realized that since he shared this class with Seto and Seto usually sat in the darkest corners, they would probably be seatmates. With an inward half-groan, half-whoop he was proved right. Class started, he noticed Seto giving him some odd looks but he ignored it. The teacher, who had not noticed the absence of a book, suddenly called him. The teacher said, “Tell me, from your book, the answer of question two.”
`Uh Oh!' thought Yugi in a panicky way as he stood up, he kept on standing for a few more moments until the box on Seto's desk suddenly fell. Yugi, being the helpful person he was, bent down at the same time as Seto to help him retrieve everything. When he was down and their heads were hidden Seto quickly whispered, “The answer's magnesium” Yugi looked at him quickly, Seto muttered, “Just say it Mutou!”
The two got up, Yugi's teacher asked him again, “What's the answer of question two Mr. Mutou?”
Yugi replied, “Magnesium, sir.”
His teacher nodded, “That's correct. Sit down.”
Yugi leaned over and asked Seto, “Why did you help me?”
Seto shrugged, “I realized that it's probably my fault that you don't have your book in the first place.”
Yugi tried to hide his disappointment, “Oh”
Seto stared at him, “Were you expecting something else?”
“No no, no. It's just that I was surprised”
“Oh” Thankfully that was the end of the bad luck that seemed to have been following Yugi so the rest of the day was actually likeable. He met up with Yami and the rest of the gang in the cafeteria. Jou was there too. The minute Jou saw him; he bent down and gave him a hug. Yugi had to try very hard to stop himself from blushing and even so, he wasn't really sure he had done it. They walked to the table at the end of the room.
Yugi smiled, it was as if it was reserved for them, `The Warriors Gang' as they were now known. Oddly enough Seto as well was considered one of them and after a few days of everyone bugging him about why he “didn't sit with the rest of the Warriors, you guys are the coolest gang in school you know”, he started sitting with them, though he never really talked with them.
`What peer pressure cannot achieve' thought Yugi with an inward smirk as he saw Seto sitting at the far end of the table with his laptop and a cup of coffee. `Let's see how he'll react to being called by his name. It isn't like we've ever tried it before.' So Yugi moved to the other side of the table, he sat down beside Seto and happily chirped, “Hello, Seto-kun. How are you?” Seto slowly looked up from his laptop and just as slowly turned around to face Yugi. Everyone at their table, and quite a few others who had overheard, held their breath.
Seto carefully analyzed the look on Yugi's face but since Yugi had made sure to fix on a look of complete innocence, that was of little or no use. Seto simply nodded and went back to his work, Yugi mentally danced and the people holding their breath let it out with a whoosh.
Seto, meanwhile was putting his brain on overload, `Why did he call me Seto? It's almost like we're friends. I even helped him out in Physics class. Sure, it was my fault that he didn't have his book but I never cared about causing them trouble before.' Seto smirked, `It would probably do him a lot of good to get into trouble. The pleasure ride while doing it and not getting caught…it would probably drive him crazy. And I should get back to work' he thought with a rueful face in the inside.
All this time, on his physical face was an expression of complete indifference. It would be unnerving to anyone who could read minds exactly how different Seto was from what everyone thought he was. But it would give an inkling of the closeness between the two brothers that Mokuba knew.
Mokuba also knew that, apart from a few people who Seto had made sure he couldn't meet again, he was the only person who knew. Seto did care really, that was why he refused to open up to anyone. He needed to know that the other person cared too, but he didn't seem to believe in words. Endless waltz much? Tristan spoke up, “Anyone seen the new DDR place yet?” Seto glanced up, this sounded interesting.
“What new place?” Anzu asked, interested
“Beside that `Day Treat' café. It's really cool and everyone says that there is a girl who comes every night and can beat anybody, it's also said that she never shows her eyes and that she wears black clothes only”
“She sounds so odd,” said Anzu
Tristan got a dreamy look on his face, “Actually everyone who's ever seen her is drooling over her. She's so beautiful…”
Yami rolled his eyes, “Tristan, have you even seen her?”
“No, he hasn't,” Ryou sat down with his plate and his yami sat down beside him.
“How do you know?” Jou asked surprised
“We were there when the moron was discussing her with some other morons,” snapped Bakura
“Little ray of sunshine today, aren't you Bakura?” Malik remarked in an amused manner, he smiled at the others and asked, “Who were you all talking about?” he added curiously, taking his usual seat across from Yami.
“Some new girl Tristan's fallen for in the new DDR place,” Yami supplied. Yugi looked on, he was often silent, preferring to listen rather than talk.
Malik frowned slightly, “Oh! That girl! In fact, she's quite interesting. They say that she proclaimed on the first night she came, `Only one person can beat me, and until he comes I will not lose,' or something to that effect. Pretty melodramatic, but everyone says that she is beautiful and she's got some mean moves though she does seem a little psychotic,”
“Idiotic, more like,” muttered Bakura, and secretly Yugi agreed though he wouldn't admit it aloud.
“Wow. This I have to see. Let's go after school.” Jou remarked. Everyone nodded, “We can use my cell to phone up home,” suggested Malik
Jou said in his typically obnoxious way; by which Yugi knew that he was nervous; “Oi Kaiba?”
“Yes?” Seto replied in a detached manner
“Coming with us?”
Seto stopped working and considered the offer for a moment; he didn't bother trying to understand why he had been asked. The whole day seemed to be something out of his more delirious dreams. `Please say yes' Yugi pleaded to any god who might listen. Seto was thinking, `I have that contract to check up. I can do that tomorrow but I promised Mokuba that I would take him out today, I can't cancel that... or can I?' Seto opened his mouth to reply, “I….
