—Dude! The first chapter of Awakening! I'm keeping my fellow Yami/Yuugi fans happy with this one. Oh, this is going to be so cute! xD Okay…technically this isn't a Yami/Yuugi fanfic. It's an Atemu/Yuugi fanfic, but that's the same thing really. Although I like Yami with his oh-so sexy tan and “skirt” (It's called a shenti, people! Not a skirt.)
—DISCLAIMER: Don't own any Yuugiou characters. Want to own Atemu, but sadly I don't.
—I claim this fanfic in the name of DML. Steal any of my fanfic ideas and may God, Buddha, whoever crap on your head.
Chapter 1 - The Scroll
The desert sun roasted the archeological dig like a turkey for Thanksgiving. Archeologists and Egyptian guides poked and trudged through different tombs of treasure and discoveries, but their leader wasn't satisfied. He was looking for the tomb of the greatest Pharaoh in history.
“Mr. Mutou, it's impossible! We've been out here for almost a month.” said a young man. He was an archeologist, but he was new to the profession, having just graduated only a year or two ago.
“Nothing's impossible.” said another man with black, red and blonde spiked hair. His lightning shaped, golden bangs framed his boyish face and amethyst eyes perfectly. He was at least twenty-four, maybe a year younger, but at first glance, Yuugi Mutou looked like he was seventeen. He had never lost the boyish features of his childhood and his height didn't help matters. He was only an inch above five feet.
“But no one has ever found Pharaoh Atemu's tomb!” the young man complained. “We've found so many other fascinating tombs with enough artifacts to fill three museums!”
“I know. But I want to be the first to discover Pharaoh Atemu's tomb. Before he passed away, my grandfather told me that he hoped I would someday find it. My grandfather spent most of his archeological career looking for the Ancient Pharaoh's tomb. Now, I want to find that tomb for his sake.” Yuugi looked over his shoulder at the young man. “Besides, I heard that the legendary Restorative Scroll is in King Atemu's tomb.”
“Restorative Scroll? I thought that was just a stupid myth.” the young man replied.
Yuugi frowned a little. “It's not a stupid myth. Historians have proof that such a scroll was developed during Pharaoh Atemu's last years. Priests and mages under Atemu's supervision created a magic spell that was said to restore a soul to living flesh.”
“Are you going to use the Scroll to bring back your grandfather?” the young man asked.
Yuugi laughed. “What for? My grandfather died happily surrounded by his family and friends. He lived a long and good life and now he's at peace in Heaven. Why in the world would I want to bring him back to this world? Sure I miss him, but he's happy in Heaven.”
The young man shrugged and left Yuugi's tent. Yuugi rolled his eyes and returned to his maps. There were lots of red X's that had proven to be failures. He knew it was probably not a good idea to ravage the Valley of the Kings, but Yuugi was doing it for his grandfather's sake.
I promised Grandpa on his death bed that I'd find Pharaoh Atemu's tomb, thought Yuugi as he stepped outside in the scorching hot. And I never break a promise.
“Mr. Mutou!” shouted one of Yuugi's colleagues.
“What is it?”
“Come quickly! We've found something!” the man said.
Yuugi followed him to a large crevice in the rocks. Yuugi whipped out his pocket flashlight and shone it through the crevice. Just inside was a corridor that looked far too smooth and purposeful to be natural. Yuugi was small and thin enough to squeeze through. He ordered the others to stay put. Several of his loyal colleagues protested, but Yuugi promised that he'd come back if he found anything.
The stones that made the corridor were smooth, yet old and forlorn. It was definitely manmade. Yuugi stepped carefully, just in case there were any booby traps. He'd lost a few guides due to tomb traps and Yuugi wasn't about to become a trap casualty. So far, no traps and the corridor continued.
Ancient pictures of Egyptians bowing to a spiky haired man in royal robes, of Egyptians bringing gifts to the spiky haired man, and of the spiky haired man using magic were displayed on the walls. These pictures told of Pharaoh Atemu and what a fine magician he was as well as the respect the ancient Egyptians had for him. Mr. Mutou had often told Yuugi that he might be a reincarnation of King Atemu. Yuugi didn't really believe that, though.
He found one room full of gold and jewels beyond imagination. Yuugi stopped and looked around, awestruck at the golden statues of Horus, the protector of Egyptian pharaohs, and of Ma'at, the Egyptian goddess of justice. Yuugi was tempted to grab something, but he continued on. The Scroll was worth so much more than those golden statues.
Suddenly a stone loosened under his foot. Hundreds of darts flew from a hidden place in the walls and Yuugi dodged as quickly as he could. When he was clear, he turned around and used some tweezers to pick up one of the darts. It was tipped with acid. If Yuugi hadn't dodged when he did, he would've been in big trouble. Yuugi dropped the dart and turned back to his task, nearly tripping over a skull with an explorer's traveling hat.
Yuugi chuckled quietly. “I see you didn't make it very far, eh? Guess I'm gonna beat ya, you moron.” He gave the skull a smug smile and kicked it. The skull bounced off the wall and smacked Yuugi right in the head. “Ow! Shit…” Yuugi moved the skull out of his way—more carefully this time—and continued tirelessly down the corridor, which seemed to be endless.
But Yuugi finally reached the end. It was a door of some kind. Yuugi shone his flashlight and narrowed his eyes at the ancient scripture. “`Beyond this door lies a passport for the dead. Our great Pharaoh wanted this Scroll to be made, lest we ever needed him again.'” Yuugi chuckled again. “Hate to disappoint you guys, but I don't plan on bringing Pharaoh Atemu back to life.”
Suddenly, the door opened by itself. Yuugi stepped back, waiting to see if he had triggered another trap…or if another skull decided to bonk him on the head. Nothing happened, but Yuugi's eyes focused on a small golden box, which looked about the size of an ordinary shoebox. Yuugi grabbed it and suddenly, the rock that the box had been sitting on began to sink into the floor.
Yuugi looked around and the entire tomb started to quake. Yuugi tucked the box securely under his arm and ran back to the crevice. The ceiling was falling apart! In fact, the entire tomb was collapsing. Yuugi made it to the crevice and his colleagues frantically worked to make the crevice big enough for their beloved leader to crawl out. There was a huge rockslide and the crevice was covered again. Everyone managed to get out of the way just in time.
Yuugi sighed and held up the golden box. His colleagues ooh-ed and aww-ed over it. Yuugi smiled big. “This, gentlemen, is what we've been looked for!” He opened the box and there, lying in the bits of sand and dust, was a rolled up piece of papyrus.
“Let's see what it says!” shouted one of Yuugi's colleagues.
Yuugi nodded. He unrolled the scroll and…
“What the hell? There's nothing on it!”
“He's right. This is the mighty Restorative Scroll we've been breaking our fucking backs for?!” shouted the young man from before.
Yuugi sighed. “I guess the writing must've faded. Let's just get out of here…” His colleagues walked away in disgust and disappointment. Yuugi returned to his tent. “I was so sure that the Scroll was—” He stopped and stared in shock as writing became to appear on the Scroll. Yuugi was about to alert his colleagues, but he reluctantly decided against it. Instead he hesitantly put the Scroll into his briefcase and helped to take down his tent.
On the plane flight home, Yuugi took a quit peek at the Scroll while in the restroom. It was a chant. According to the Scroll this chant invoked the powers of the Egyptian god of death, Anubis, and transforming a human soul into mortal flesh. Yuugi was thrilled, even of it was a bunch of hooey. When he got home, he decided that it would be funny if he read the chant.
“Nothing will happen.” Yuugi said as he flushed the toilet and went back to his proper seat. “But hell, it sounds like fun.”
—Yes, I'm stopping there. This was just to show you how Yuugi found the magic scroll. Trust me; he'll use it in the next Chapter. Okay…so if you guys are having trouble with reviewing, I've enabled the anonymous reviews feature. Sorry about that. Let me know what ya'll think!
