Chapter #1: New Student

The next day Yugi and his friends gathered for their classes. Joey was sitting at his desk for once, going through his duel monsters deck, trying to once again put a new trick into it. Yugi was looking out the window, deep in thought about one thing or another. Tea was sitting behind him scribbling something into a notebook, sighing in frustration occasionally.

"Guys, what's going on?" Tristan wondered.

"What do you mean Tristan?" Tea looked up from her furious scribbling.

"I mean that ever since Joey saw that girl yesterday, he's been furiously trying to make his deck better, and Yugi is deep in thought," Tristan elaborated.

"What! I just want to make sure my deck will totally annihilate that girl when we duel!" Joey barked at his best friend.

"I'm just deep in thought, I didn't know that was a crime," Yugi put in, he however didn't tell them that he was also in a conversation with Yami. No one really understood the mysteries of his puzzle, and he didn't want the whole class thinking he was a lunatic talking to himself in his mind; he was getting teased enough as it is.

"I couldn't help but overhear Joey, but who is this duelist you are so intent on beating?" Bakura cut in as he sat down in his seat, having just arrived.

"The Black Dragon Empress!" Joey replied harshly.

Bakura sweatdropped, "Joey, no one knows who she is."

"We know who she is, she visited the game shop yeste'day," Joey shot back, "I saw the three Red Eyes Black Dragon in her deck myself! Yug even held them!" he added.

"Oh…" Bakura began, "Well that's different, but how do you intend to find her?" he added in an afterthought.

"Good point…" Joey quieted down.

"Nice deducting Sherlock," Tristan muttered, shaking his head.

The bell rang and Joey hastily put his deck away, not wanting the teacher to see it. The teacher walked in but unlike most days, she didn't fully close the door behind her, "Settle down now," she spoke, placing her book and a small blinder on the teacher's table. "Oh and class, today we will be having a new student, she just moved here from America, Ms. Mayfield, please come in and introduce yourself," the teacher added.

There was a wave of whispers in the classroom, as a girl walked in, dressed in school uniform, she had long black hair that was tied behind her head in a high ponytail, and as she looked up her blue eyes became evident.

"Hello… I am Riley Mayfield, it's a pleasure," she spoke quietly, holding her hands before her, in her hand hung her small backpack, undoubtedly just the bare necessities for the first day of her new studies.

"Riley you can sit at the back there," the teacher motioned to the empty seat beside Tristan. The girl nodded and walked to the seat, carefully placing her pack by the desk and sitting down, immediately taking out a small notebook and a pen.

Joey turned around and watched the girl, she was familiar for some strange reason, "Hey… haven't I seen you before somewhere?" he asked.

The girl looked up at him, and immediately looked down, "No… I don't think so," she replied timidly.

[Aibou, I think it's the same girl from the game shop yesterday,] Yami spoke in a slightly hushed tone, as to not make Yugi jump.

{So you think so too? She does look like her,} Yugi replied, but then refocused on the class instead of the seemingly overly shy girl sitting two seats over.

[I'm positive it's her,] Yami continued. But Yugi didn't reply.

Riley meanwhile watched the four of them, she recognized them, 'this cant be good,' she thought. 'That guy already suspects something,' he muse continued to stray. 'Oh well, I can probably beat them all in a duel, they wouldn't be able to withstand the power of my dragons,' turning back to the lecture she began taking notes, occasionally answering a question the rest of the class didn't quite catch unto. Soon enough the bell rang for the lunch period.

"Yug, that was her, I'm positive this Riley girl is the black dragon empress," Joey said just as soon as the five of them, being Yugi, Himself, Tea, Tristan, and Bakura left the classroom.

"It is her, at least that's what Yami thinks," Yugi replied.

"I don't see why you are so obsessed with beating her," Bakura added.

"It's a pride thing! She uses the same dragon as I do, and I want to see who uses it better," Joey shot back.

"Last I heard she doesn't just have one Red Eyes, she had three, and a whole assortment of other dragons, you're in for a tough duel Joey," Bakura countered.

"And Let's not forget she brought two thunder dragons, and a twin-headed thunder dragon from Yugi's Grandpa yesterday, those are as nearly as powerful as a blue eyes white dragon!" Tea pointed out.

"You just have to point out that my chances are becoming slim to none fast, don't you?" Joey sounded offended by his friends. The others just shrugged.

Having walked into the cafeteria, the crowd hovering over one of the tables was unmistakable, "Hey what's going on there?" Tea wondered.

The five moved to take a closer look, they saw two of the younger students were dueling, and surprisingly, Riley was hovering over one of them, watching intently. The teens playing were matched equally, and Yugi could see why Riley was favoring the girl, she had a few dragons on the field, while her opponent had none.

"You know, if you played that creature here with this equip card, it'll be just about enough to knock his Flower Wolf in for a loop, and win this duel for you," Riley suggested to the girl, pointing out two cards in the girl's hand.

The girl looked up at Riley, and then at her hand and nodded, "I got it… alright… I play my Gemini Elf in attack mode, and I also power them up with my horn of the unicorn! And I attack!" the girl announced proudly. The boy groaned, "Damn it! Why is she getting help from the older students?" he asked, gathering his cards to shuffle them back in his deck.

"Those who use dragons, will always get my help," Riley replied, and turned around, leaving.

"Hey wait a second!" Joey called after her.

Riley turned around; "Yes?" she seemed to be glaring at him slightly, because her blue eyes deepened in color.

"You have a deck here? You seem to know a lot about duel monsters," Joey spoke.

"Oh I don't think so… I'm not really that good, it's basic math really…" Riley replied, trying to shy away.

"Don't think I'm a moron! I know who you are! You're the Black Dragon Empress!" Joey called back after her, rather loudly.

Heads turned immediately, Riley turned around sharply, her timid side vanished in an instant, "So you're on to me… and for that, I'm afraid I'm going to have to destroy you!" she replied coldly. "I know who you are too Joey, second best duelist in the world from the last Duelist Kingdom tournament, but can you Red Eyes Black dragon put up a fight against three of mine?" her evil smirk didn't go unnoticed by everyone.

"That was dumb Joey, maybe she wanted to keep her identity a secret," Yugi warned.

Reaching into her backpack Riley pulled out a little plastic case, opening it she took out her deck, "Prepare for defeat Joey Wheeler!" she hissed, her blue eyes were now Prussian, and her timid side was all but gone.

Author Notes: So Joey got himself in trouble? Can he really beat Riley on her own turf? Or did he just dig himself an early grave?

Oh on another note, I just have to ask, how many of you would be offended if Riley beat Joey?
