Blind Love

The soft, sweet notes of his flute floated through the light spring air as Yami sat against the trunk of a tree at the side of a main road, playing for any travellers who would happen to pass by. Yami would play at the side of roads from the warm sunshine of the morning to the light chill of dusk. A vast array of tunes and melodies that Yami could create with his simple instrument always earned him a few coins for a good meal. Ever so often, when he felt the need to be somewhere else, Yami would pack up his belongings and go where the roads would take him. It was a free life, a hard life, the life of a travelling musician.
From across the road, hidden by the foliage of the forest a young centaur watched the young human play his music. He had been coming here to listen to the gentle songs that Yami would spawn everyday after he had first heard the musician while he was hunting a few days. Seto wanted to meet him up close, wanted to know how he learned to play such beautiful things. He had no coins to offer him, though Yami deserved all the money in the world, Seto was a centaur and had no use for human currency. In fact, he had no use for humans.
Humans and centaurs were never on even ground. Both kinds fought constantly over land and were almost always at a war of some sort. Humans hated them and they hated humans, therefore it would have been dangerous for Seto to go and speak with the exotic musician.
Seto sighed when he heard heavy hoof beats far down the road, they were to light to be centaurs or heins[1], which meant it was a group of humans. Quickly turning, giving one last glance at his music maker, Seto trotted off into the forest deciding he would come back after his hunt.
Yami continued to play even as he heard the horses stop and their riders descend from the beasts and come closer to him. He stopped playing and cocked his head, dark red eyes staring blankly at nothing when he heard a voice,
"Well well.. lookie at what we have 'ere fellas. A lil' music rat." That was the last thing Yami heard before he blacked out.

Seto frowned as he made his way back to the main road, confused as to why he couldn't hear the flute notes anymore. Had the human decided to move on? He pushed through the line of trees at the road's edge and frowned deeply when he found Yami slumped at the base of the tree. Quickly he made his way over to Yami's prone form, gasping when he noticed all the wounds on the small human. Yami had been attacked by bandits and left for dead. That was quite obvious. There was a lump at the back of Yami's head, indicating a blunt object had hit him. Hastily, Seto looked the boy over, scowling when he discovered bruises all over his slight body. He decided to take Yami back to his den, easily forgetting all of the risks that would produce. Galloping with Yami held in his strong arms, Seto made his way through the forests paths and past a small meadow into a slightly green terrain. Finally he stopped and took the human into a cave with its entrance hidden by two bushes growing along side the walls of rock.
Inside his small-centaur-wise home, Seto lay Yami down on a mat as centaurs didn't sleep on beds. Carefully, he removed Yami's shirt, trying not to jar any of his injuries as he cleaned the human and bandaged him. Seto hissed softly as he ran his fingers over Yami's cracked ribs, cursing the humans for the damage they had done to this innocent of their own kind. Patiently, Seto cleaned Yami and set up a small makeshift bed for him in the corner of his home. Satisfied with his little patient, Seto left his den to skin and prepare his hunt and dinner.
When all his daily chores were well and done, the centaur watched his human charge sleep from his bed side, absently admiring the exotic looking boy. The bangs which hung around his sharp face resembled gold-spun silk, the crown of red and black hair wild and free, or at least trying to be as locks of it hung out at odd angles from under the head wrapping. Seto watched, seemingly in a trance as the boy slept, the rise and fall of his chest, the soft parting of those rose petal lips hypnotised the young hunter. It was like watching an angel rest and yet, this boy was a human. Seto sighed as at that moment the consequences of helping the musician sunk into his mind.
Why did he bring this human here? He knew very well that he would be punished if the elders if they found he was caring for a human. Why *was* he even helping this boy? Humans were dangerous, all centaurs had been taught that at a young age. Did he believe this one wasn't because of his beautiful music? Or was he just charmed by the boy's beauty? Seto shook his head and ran his hand through his sandy hair as he glanced back at Yami, eyes caressing the strong tones in his face, millions of why's running through his thoughts.

Nutmeg and vanilla.. Yami twitched his nose, never before had he smelt that combination. He groaned as he tried to sit up, holding still as a wave of dizziness hit him. He was surprised to find himself on a bed made of hay and cloth with bandages on his chest and head. Yami jumped when he heard a smooth voice speak startling him,
"How are you feeling, human?" The voice was cautious and guarded but Yami could sense a hint of concern in the words spoken.
"I..I'm fine.. where.. am I? What happened?"
"You were attacked by bandits and left for dead. I brought you someplace safe and cared for your injuries."
"Bandits... Th-thank you for saving me.... my flute!" Seto blinked as Yami felt around frantically, searching for something that was obviously not there. "Where's my flute?" The centaur cocked his head, staring at the human strangely.
"It is not here... you'd see it if..." Seto's cobalt eyes widened in realisation. "You're.. blind."
Yami turned his head in the direction of Seto's voice, his blank crimson eyes staring lifelessly at where Seto was. "Yes... and now... I have nothing.. my flute was all that I had." Yami's slender hands balled into fists, "They.. took it.."
"What was so special about that flute?"
"My mother.. she gave that flute to me before she passed on.. it's from Avalon.. forged by Faerie fire. I've nothing now.. I can't earn enough to--"
"Can't you work?"
"No one will hire a blind boy and I refuse to sell myself to a wizard." Yami sighed and tried to get off the odd bed he was lying on, only managing to trip over some pot and stumble to the ground, jolting his ribs, "Ah!"
Seto carefully picked Yami up and lay the human back down on the hay, "Don't move. Rest. You're still injured. You are not allowed off this bed, understand?" Yami nodded and lay back against the airy pillow, sighing as he closed his eyes.
"Yes, thank you." As he slowly drifted off into a hazy slumber, Yami could swear he heard hoofs scuffling on the dirt ground as Seto left the room.

A few days later Yami was able to move a little more freely around Seto's home, he found himself more and more curious about his saviour. He could tell that the other was still young, probably not much older than him by the sound of his voice but the other always spoke to Yami from a distance, rarely going near the boy unless he had hurt himself or needed to be led back to the bed. Even then, he wondered why his host refused to allow himself to be touched. Yami didn't even know his name. What also puzzled him were the noises he would hear, he believed his host had a pet horse or deer as Yami constantly head hoofbeats in the cave.
Yami was sitting at a table one evening when he heard the hoofbeats then Seto's voice soon afterwards. He lifted his head in the direction of Seto's voice,
"Yes?" He blinked as he felt some sort of wooden stick pressed quickly into his hand and the sounds of hooves shuffling, "What's this?" Yami slowly ran his fingers along the object, feeling the painstakingly carved holes and engraved design. It was a flute. He smiled, lifting the flute to his lips and playing a soft melody, amazed by the sharp clarity of this handmade piece. "Th-thank you.. this.. it's wonderful.. please.. may I know your name so I may thank you properly?"
Seto paused, giving your name to anyone for gratitude was dangerous if you were a centaur. It meant you were friends, if he were friends with this human..
"Seto. My name is Seto." Damn.
Yami smiled, setting the flute down on the table, not noticing it roll to the ground as he stood and took a step forward, tripping on the round pipe and falling forward. "AH!" He braced himself for the impact but found himself in warm arms and soft fur brushing his cheek. Yami blinked as the fur shifted under his face, it was warm, alive, not animal skin clothing. Curiously, he ran his hands along that softness, discovering it was silky horsehair.
Yami held a gasp as his hands suddenly found themselves touching the smooth skin of a flat stomach and up against the expanse of a toned chest. Lowering his hands again, he found the border of skin and hair, he circled his arms around the waist, finding another addition to the body he was touching.
Seto held his breath as Yami began to feel him, completely frozen in place as Yami's gently hands caressed his body. His ice blue eyes were locked on Yami's face, absorbed by the curious innocence on the human's features. He felt himself tense as Yami's blind eyes looked up at him, a small smile, playing on the boy's lips.
"Seto... you're.. you're a centaur..." Yami had just doomed himself by his people.

[1] I'm not sure if these actually exist in mythology. They have the upper body of a female human and the lower quarters of a doe.

Well… that was boring… Second Chapter will definitely be more interesting. If not.. at least Yami and Seto go riding?
