Summary: Yugi's got a secret desire for something Yami can no longer give him, so he seeks out the one person who can: Seto Kaiba.
Notes: Damn it, I never intended to write this fic. Let me explain. (Or skip the notes and get right into the prologue, if you prefer. I wouldn't blame you.) When I was writing "Kaiba's VRPG" and "Room of the Soul," I realized that some readers were looking for a story of sadistic Kaiba and Yugi-torture. I can't do Yugi-torture, and the Kaiba in those stories couldn't either. The emotional-romantic ending of "Room" was foreshadowed back in the first story, but I was too subtle about it for my own good, and some people were disappointed by the way the story turned out. I hate to disappoint my readers, especially the really enthusiastic ones, even though I know one story can't please everyone. So I dragged out this old plot bunny for a YamiBakura/Yugi story that I'd rejected and stuck Kaiba in Bakura's place. As soon as I put Kaiba in there, he took over and would not shut up. Insistent, insensitive creep. But that's the way some people like him, I guess. Including Yugi -- at least in this story.
Enjoy. And give me feedback, please!!! As I said above, I wrote this in less than two hours, so maybe it sucks. Let me know if it does. Thanks.

Brand New Lover, part one (prologue)
Your sweet nature, darling,
was too hard to swallow;
I've got the solution,
I'm leaving tomorrow...
Now as I stand and stare into your eyes
I see safety there -
I want surprises.
- Brand New Lover by Dead or Alive
Late in the afternoon, Kaiba set aside business and schoolwork long enough to make a phone call.
"Hello, Kame Game Shop, Yugi speaking!"
"Yugi. Come tonight."
There was a brief pause, a soft intake of breath that made Kaiba's lips twist up in a smile.
"It will have to be late. There's a local tournament starting here at six, and they tend to drag on till midnight..."
"I know all about it. Be here by 12:30 or don't come at all."
Another short silence; this time he could hear Yugi swallow hard.
"Yes. I'll be there." His voice was softer.
Kaiba hung up. He was practically hard already. It was going to be a long evening.
---
He knew Yugi would be on time. Not early, and not a minute late. He'd been twenty minutes late once. He'd run the whole way, arriving so frantic and out of breath that he couldn't even speak. Kaiba had sent him home. He was never late again, no matter what he had to do to get here.
As he waited by the door of his private entrance at the back of the mansion at a quarter past midnight, Kaiba wished he'd set an earlier time. He only hoped Yugi was as ready as he was. He stepped outside to wait, smiling into the dark. Yugi would be ready. He always was.
At the beginning, Kaiba thought the novelty would wear off and Yugi would quit coming, but that hadn't happened yet. Kaiba's inventiveness was only part of the reason. The depth of Yugi's need was greater than he'd realized. Sometimes he even worried that he might not be able to fulfill that need sufficiently. At other times, it was his own dark depths that he worried about.
It had been that way ever since Yugi first came to him. He remembered with startling clarity the look on Yugi's face, how it had puzzled him beyond his irritation just enough to make him listen. Yugi's assertiveness at the start certainly didn't give a clue of what was to come.
"Kaiba, I need to ask you something." Yugi had managed to corner Kaiba alone after school one day, and Kaiba could tell he wouldn't go away until he'd gotten the answer to his question. He was all too familiar with Yugi's tenacity by now.
"Make it quick, then. I'm busy."
Yugi refused to be intimidated, as usual - which was ironic considering what was to follow.
"I've been wondering if you ever think about the way it used to be. The way you used to be, back when we first met. Before I - or rather, the Other Me, Atemu - defeated you with Exodia."
Kaiba glared at him. Of course, he thought of that horrible defeat often, even after all this time. That other side of Yugi was now living his own life as a master Duelist known by his ancient name of Atemu. Even though Kaiba had met Atemu on several occasions and knew who he was and how he had once been a part of Yugi, he still thought of it as Yugi who had defeated him that time.
Hardly a day went by that Kaiba didn't think of that duel that had changed his life. But of the time before that, they way he'd been when he was driven to design the deadly Death-T games.... that only returned to him in nightmares.
"What about it?" he snapped to hide his discomfort at the reminder.
"Well... I know you've changed. So has Atemu, you know. He used to be like that too, in a way. I mean..."
"What do you mean? Why are you bringing all this up now?"
Yugi took the deep breath of someone about to make a plunge into icy water, or into a raging inferno.
"When he first came to me, when I first knew he was someone real and not just a part of me, he was forceful. Demanding. Even cruel sometimes." Yugi's eyes glazed over a little then, remembering things Kaiba didn't care to imagine. "It was only in my mind because he was only a spirit, but it felt real. It scared me. But it was also exciting."
He paused. Kaiba waited a few seconds for him to continue, baffled and distinctly uncomfortable to be hearing this.
"Are you talking about sex?" he asked.
Yugi looked up at him quickly and nodded. "Yes. I am."
"So? Why on earth are you telling me about your sex life?"
"Because it's different now. We're still together..."
"So I've heard," Kaiba said flatly. Rumors about Atemu's love life were traded about like Duel Monsters cards among the fans of the game.
"And he loves me, and I love him too," Yugi rushed on. "But he's not like that anymore. He's still ruthless when he duels, of course. But to me he's always completely kind and considerate. He's a wonderful lover. But it's not exciting anymore. I know he could never be like he used to be." His voice dropped almost to a whisper. "I miss it."
"So you're bored with your love life. Why come to me?"
Even as he asked the question, Kaiba guessed the answer. Before Yugi raised his eyes, summoning his courage to speak, Kaiba knew what he was going to say.
"You've changed too, I know. But I thought, maybe, you haven't changed as much."
Kaiba stared down at Yugi's upturned face. Tendrils of old emotions seemed to reach out from his nightmares. That old darkness was never truly gone. He battled with it every day, even using it when he had to. But he tried not to remember how seductive it had been when he had been deep in its grip, feeling its full power.
Before the Other Yugi had shattered those shadows, he'd reveled in the feeling of holding the power of life and death in his hands. He'd managed to convince himself he didn't need that excitement any more, that he didn't miss the thrill of having all that power. He certainly never considered the possibility that someone else might need it in another way.
Had he changed so much? Maybe not. Maybe Yugi was right. His lip curled up into a smile, and Yugi's eyes got a little bigger.
He let the impulse take him, just to see where it would go. He leaned down quickly and grabbed Yugi's leather collar, pulling his face up so their lips almost touched.
"Is this what you mean, Yugi?" he said in a low voice. He yanked Yugi up on tiptoe and kissed him, devouring his mouth, biting his lip and thrusting his tongue in deep. The sound of surprise that came from Yugi made his blood heat up. With his hand on Yugi's throat he could feel his pulse start to race. Yugi's hands clutched at his shirt, but he didn't pull away.
He ravaged Yugi's mouth, surprised by how good it tasted and felt. He'd never kissed anyone like this, but it felt so right he didn't want to stop. Finally he did, though. He let Yugi down, but he didn't let go of the collar.
Yugi was breathless and flushed, his lips swollen and wet. Kaiba felt a flush of old power swell through him at the sight. Strangest of all, in Yugi's eyes there was a glimmer of hope and joy.
"You want more of this," Kaiba said, a statement rather than a question. "You want it so badly you'll take it from me, if that's the only place you can get it."
He felt Yugi swallow. He ran his thumb over the pulse throbbing in Yugi's neck. Yugi's fists curled against his chest. He peered up at Kaiba from behind the golden tendril of hair that always fell across his forehead.
"Yes," he said. Kaiba had never heard Yugi's voice sound so husky. "Please, Kaiba."
Kaiba let him go and took a step back, so Yugi's hands fell from his chest. But Kaiba could see the sensual tension in his body as he waited for Kaiba's answer.
"I'll think about it," he said. Letting his lips curl into that smile again, he turned abruptly and walked away. "I'll let you know," he tossed back over his shoulder.
Yugi looked so desperate, standing there watching him walk away, that he almost laughed. Didn't he know they'd already begun?
When he found Yugi alone three days later, he had one question to ask.
"Does Atemu know about this?"
Yugi lowered his eyes and shook his head. "No. I can't tell him. He wouldn't understand. No one else knows."
"Good." Kaiba smiled as Yugi's head snapped up. "Come to the mansion tomorrow evening at nine. Go around to the back, there's a private entrance to my rooms there. The door will be open."
He walked away without waiting for Yugi to answer.
The next day Yugi had showed up at this door for the first time. Without a word, Kaiba had led him to the room he'd prepared in the basement of the mansion. He'd done a lot of research in three days, and a lot of rush deliveries had arrived at his private entrance. He'd worked at his old fever pitch of efficiency to get everything ready. He kept flashing back on his preparations for Death-T, but this was different. This was so much better.
Yugi walked into the room and stopped, staring wide-eyed at all the equipment. His gaze wandered from the leather sling in one corner of the room, to the X-shaped rack with its leather cuffs and chains in another. Then his eyes skimmed over the silk-sheeted bed with bolts at all four corners, and caught on the array of whips, canes, and paddles on the wall.
Kaiba stood close behind him, letting him take it all in before he spoke.
"If this isn't what you had in mind, you can leave now. Otherwise, start taking off your clothes."
"By the gods, Kaiba," Yugi said. He sounded breathless. He turned and looked up at Kaiba, meeting his eyes directly for what would be the last time for several hours. "Thank you."
He turned around again and fixed his gaze on the floor as he started to pull off his clothes with trembling hands.
--- the present ---
Now Kaiba waited for him to arrive again, coming at Kaiba's command as he had done regularly for the last six months. Kaiba was sometimes afraid the delicious feeling of anticipation would diminish, but it was as strong as a drug tonight. When Yugi came into sight, walking slowly down the path that led to this nearly hidden door, Kaiba felt a surge of lust so strong he almost groaned. Yugi met his gaze and smiled, but by the time he got to the door, his head was bowed.
"Go in," Kaiba said.
Yugi went without a word. Kaiba followed him in and locked the door behind them.
