Chapter 1
I could feel the vibrations from the crowd on my back, and did my best to ignore them, because I had bigger things to worry about. I, Takuya Natsume, was fighting one of the most important duels of my life. I would be named regional champion if I won this duel. Yeah, right… this duel had SO not been going well. I was at 1800 life points because my opponent, a guy two years older than me with red hair, had pulled out Maju Garzett. He had sacked off Despair from the Dark and Ryo Kokki, who had a total attack power of 5000, for it. He'd blasted away my Dark Paladin, ripping away 2200 of my life points and it was my turn. Across the Coliseum, I heard him taunt me over the loudspeaker through his headset.
“What have you got that could possibly defeat my monster? You're doomed!”
He was right. At 2100 life points, he held the advantage. Right in my face, at that. Right, that is, until I top decked, and drew the exact card I needed. I couldn't suppress the grin that rose to my face, no matter how hard I might've tried.
“You want to know what I've got to destroy you? I'll tell you. Just the card. Say hello to Book of Moon!” Most assuredly knowing what it did, my opponent got wide-eyed. But he didn't know the half of it. “I'll also play Nobleman of Crossout! It will destroy and remove from play your monster! So, there's now nothing to stand between me and your life points! Well, nothing, that is, besides my lack of a monster. And I'm gonna remedy that right now! I summon Skilled Dark Magician! (1900/1700) Plus, with Yami on the field, he has enough attack points to destroy you! (2100/1900) Now, I attack your life points with Skilled Dark Magician!”

From the stands, I heard my friends cheering. I looked over to them and smiled at Lily, Levi and Zane. Lily was almost as tall as I was, and was a blonde-brunette and a duelist.
She ran an Amazoness Deck that I admired, it was powerful. Levi was a duelist too; he was a good half-foot shorter than me, had red hair and for a thirteen-year old, he had a great deck. One he fondly referred to as `Second Degree Burn' and it was true. He had almost beaten me in a duel one day, in fact it was the same day he started hanging out with us. Zane…well, he was different. Black-haired and only a few inches shorter than Lily, Zane wasn't a duelist, at least, not a serious one.
Anyway, as I listened to the crowd, I heard something else, my brother's voice. I was wearing the ring he gave me before going off to war and I could almost hear him say:
Good job, bro. You made me proud.
“Jess?” Luckily, my microphone had been turned off, so no one heard me. Well, that I'm not quite sure of…
A few days later, I was sitting at home, watching TV when the phone rang. No one else was home, so I was the one to answer it.
“Hello?”
“Are you interested in seeing your brother again?”
“Huh, Who are you?!”
“Meet me on the top of the Enterprise building downtown. Bring your deck…”
“What?”
“5 o'clock. Don't be late…Goodbye…”
“Wait!” No answer, but no click either. “How do you know who I am?”
“If you win the duel…you'll get all the answers you need.” The other end clicked away. Who the heck could he be? Think, Takuya…Hmm…maybe he was at regionals and saw my win? But if that's true, I still can't account for how he knows me or my phone number…might as well start calling myself Cat, cause curiosity's gonna kill me…
I checked my watch. An hour. I would take me at least 45 minutes to get downtown. In the end, I grabbed my Deck Box out of my room before making my way to the front door. I locked the door before heading to my car and pulling out of my driveway. I hit the highway downtown, and it wasn't long before I saw the top of the Enterprise building. As I drove, the sun caught the sapphire in my ring and drew my attention to it.
Oh…big bro…be with me…keep me safe…
Looking back, I could have worded it differently and probably should have. It made no difference on my arrival at the top of the building some 30 minutes later. I checked my watch again. 4:51. Once again, my mind raced with questions. But, they went unanswered, because a man in black showed up. He was wearing a black dress hat that kept his eyes hidden, a black shirt that tucked into his black gloves, and black pants that tucked into black boots.
“That's some outfit,” I heard myself say.
“Yes, I quite like it. In case you're wondering, I am the man who called you out.” Even though I couldn't see most of his face, I could tell he was smiling, though I doubted it was from true happiness. Before he said another word, he tossed me an old gray Duel Disk. He wore a new, black one. I put on the device and we both slid our decks into the deck slots and fired off the projectors, which pulled the disks into active mode.
“Are you ready to duel, Takuya?”
“Who are you?!” I just can't stand `mysterious' people.
“All in due time, child.” A growl from me only encouraged him. “But for now, it's time to duel!”
“Good! No meaningless jabber, just a duel! You're going down, pal, whoever you may be!”

We drew our hands and he held out an open hand towards me.
“I'll let you go first, child. It will make little difference on the final outcome of this duel!”
“Fine with me!” I drew my first card of the game and looked my hand over. I had seen duels with these things on TV before, so I knew where the cards were supposed to go. I placed one card facedown in each a monster and spell/trap zone. “Your turn!”
“Okay, first I'll play Mystic Tomato in attack mode! (1400/1000) Then send him to attack your facedown monster!” A rotten tomato with a face appeared in front of him, then went flying at my facedown monster. As my card flipped, a purple robed magician with a staff similar to the Dark Magician's appeared, kneeling, in front of me, before shattering.
“You destroyed Apprentice Magician! (400/800) His effect lets me summon another monster from my deck facedown!” Another brown backed card appeared to defend me.
“End turn, after setting two facedown cards!”
“I draw!” I did so and summoned. “I summon Breaker the Magical Warrior! (1600/800) (1900/800) He comes into play with a Spell Counter on him, which I can tribute to destroy one card on your side of the field!” (1600/800) A black stone in a special place on Breaker's sword hilt shattered as my opponent's leftmost facedown card shattered. “Now I flip summon Apprentice Magician! (400/800) His effect lets me place a Spell Counter on one of my cards! And you can guess that I'm gonna choose Breaker! (1900/800) Now, I tribute it again, to destroy your other facedown card!” (1600/800)
His other facedown card shattered, but his smirk didn't fade.
“Now I'll send Breaker to attack Mystic Tomato!”
O-3800
“You activated Mystic Tomato's ability! When he is destroyed, another Dark monster takes his place! And I choose Witch of the Black Forest!” (1100/1200)
“I'll end my move.”
“Good. My turn again.” He slid his top card into his left hand and made his next move. “I'll summon Sangan to the field! (1000/600) And then play Dark Hole from my hand!”
And it hit me. As the field temporarily turned to a black hole, I realized it. The best Exodia Deck I'd ever seen. And it was only the start of the duel. Two pieces. Two pieces of Exodia now waited for me in his hand. I knew I was in for it. The field was left empty.
“I've got nothing left to play but this one facedown card! Your move!”
Crud…Now I get his smile. He knew I couldn't have foreseen an Exodia deck. His facedown card could be anything, most likely defensive. I'll have to be quick. Don't let him get Exodia. No time to be fancy, just hit his life points.
There wasn't anything in my hand that guaranteed me a victory, but I had to try something.
“I'll summon my Skilled Dark Magician! (1900/1700) Now, I play Terraforming! It will both add my field spell, Yami, to my hand, but add a Spell Counter to my Skilled Dark Magician!” I pulled my deck out of it's slot and looked through it for Yami. I added it to my hand, then shuffled and replaced the deck. “Now I'll activate Yami! It will add another Spell Counter to my Skilled Dark Magician as well as add 200 attack points to his total! (2100/1900) Now my tall, purple robed magician, had two black stones on his green staff. “Now I play the last card in my hand, Mystical Space Typhoon! It destroys your card, and any hopes you had of winning!” At least, it would have. Had he not activated it.
“Threatening Roar! You may not declare an attack on me this turn at all! So forget ending this duel prematurely!” I growled, simply out of exasperation, but he laughed. “What's the matter, child? Don't want to play the game now that you're losing?!”
“Shut up! I'm here for one reason and one reason only! And it's not to play!”
“That's what you say child. Anyway, it my turn again!” He drew. “I'll set these cards facedown and that will end my turn!” One horizontal card and one vertical card, both facedown, appeared to defend him.
“What's the matter, child? Don't want to play the game now that you're losing?!”
“Shut up! I'm here for one reason and one reason only! And it's not to play!”
“That's what you say child. Anyway, it my turn again!” He drew. “I'll set these cards facedown and that will end my turn!” One horizontal card and one vertical card, both facedowns, appeared to defend him.
My purplexedness must have shown, because he smirked wider now.
What in the world could he have facedown? Well, I'd better take it out fast! I noticed my magician now had three Spell Counters now. Of course! I had forgotten about the one Mystical Space Typhoon had earned me because of his taunting. This guy knew more than just the cards. He was an expert-level duelist. Crud…
I placed my index and middle fingers on my top card and slid it into my hand. Two cards. Skilled White Magician and Nobleman of Crossout. Well, it's worth a shot.
“I'll summon my Skilled White Magician! (1900/2100) Now, I'll play Nobleman of Crossout on your facedown card!” It was revealed as Battle Footballer (1000/2100) before shattering. “Now I flip my facedown card, Pitch Black Power Stone! It's activation earns it three Spell Counters, which I can then dole out as I see fit, once per turn! So, I'll play one on Skilled White Magician, giving him two Spell Counters!” The white-robe's green staff now held two black stones. “Now, both my monsters, attack his life points and win this duel for me!”
“Ah, ah, ah. Not so fast, child. I activate Scapegoat!” Instead of destroying him, my two magicians destroyed two of his sheep tokens, leaving him two. “My turn?”
I sighed. “Yes.”
“Good. I draw. Hm. That's nice, isn't it? Well, it's your turn, again.”
“Without anything to do? Well, that's fine with me. I draw!” I nearly fell over. Scapegoat!? Oh the humanity! Oh, well, I still have my cards on the field… “I'll again transfer a Spell Counter to my Skilled White Magician, giving him three, too! Now, say hello to their older brothers! I'll sacrifice them both to Special Summon Dark Magician and Buster Blader!” (2700/2300) (2600/2000) The purple and white robed magicians turned to light, grew and then turned back into holograms while I slid the two cards out of my Duel Disk and placed them in the graveyard, then searching my deck for the Dark Magician and Buster Blader, then placed them each in the zones previously occupied by the smaller counterparts. “Now, each of them will destroy a sheep token!” Both rushed forward and swung their weapons down on a sheep token, tearing them to shreds, and then shattering. “And with that, I'll end my turn, now that your defenses are gone!” I clenched a fist out in front of me out of triumph.
“I draw.” His expression had not changed throughout this transaction. I had come to expect it. “And now I'll end my turn.”
Aw, man. Four pieces. I can tell by his demeanor. “I draw!” I couldn't believe my eyes. “And now I activate Polymerization! Go, my monsters, fuse into the Ultimate Magical Swordsman, Dark Paladin!” As a portal opened between my two monsters, sucking them in, I couldn't help but smirk. Big brother had come through for me. The portal closed behind my massive monster. (2900/2400) “Now, Dark Paladin, destroy more than half his life points!”
O-900
“It matters not, child! I have four pieces of Exodia in my hand now, and I have a hunch that the next card will be your last!”
“Go ahead and draw it,” I returned. My words were packed with a false confidence I hoped he couldn't see.
“Very well. I draw!” He stayed quiet for a minute then said, “Your turn.”
“What's wrong, dark man? Didn't draw what you needed? Well, not that it matters. I draw!” Hm…Royal Magical Library…not useful, not that it matters. Then I looked at the other card in my hand, for whatever reason. Huh?! This was Scapegoat a minute ago! I can't possibly be Exchange! How-? And it dawned on me. Jesse had made good on his promise. He was with me, without a doubt. Well, no reason to let it go to waste… “Now I'll play Exchange!”
He said nothing, not that he needed to. Instead, he began walking towards me, as I started walking towards him. “It means that we give each other a card from our hand! You can have my Royal Magical Library. I'm getting a piece of Exodia!” We returned to our positions before I spoke again. “Now, I'll end my turn, without attacking you.”
He finally broke. “How dare you not attack me?! I'll make you regret it!”
“Sure, just get on with it. I have my brother to see.”
“Alright, but you're not going to like this! I play Card Destruction!”
“What's not to like? You still won't be able to use Exodia and I'll get to draw a card.” I tossed his Exodia piece back to him and caught my Royal Magical Library.
“Oh, it's coming, child. It's coming.” I slid a card off my deck. He put all his cards into the graveyard and drew an entirely new hand. “Now, I'll activate Contract with Exodia! By tributing a level four monster, like Mystic Tomato, (1400/1000) I can Special Summon Exodia Necross (1800/1000) from my hand!” I lost all my confidence. There was no way on earth I was beating that thing. For one, it didn't get affected by spells, traps, or monster effects, didn't get destroyed as a result of battle, and gained a thousand attack points every turn. I know all this because he spent all of ten minutes taunting me with it.
“Now, I'll end my turn. Realize your defeat, boy!”
I didn't bother drawing a card. What was the use? I was doomed anyway. Even though he hadn't depleted any of my life points, I was no closer to winning the duel than I was at the start. Or so I thought…until I realized he'd left that gargantuan shadow in attack mode. I don't think he even noticed, but I was gonna take full advantage of it.
“You say I'm done for? Wrong!”
“What?”
“Wrong. You would be undefeatable, had you left your monster in defense mode! Now you'll pay! Dark Paladin, show him what I mean! Attack Exodia Necross!”
The large swordsman in blue armor ran forward and cut across Exodia Necross's left shoulder, the blade sinking into the monster of complete shadow. Dark Paladin managed to finish the cut, bringing the blade out of the right side of Exodia Necross's torso, leaving not a mark on the monster, but depleting the shadow master's life points nonetheless.

“Well, child, you passed the test.”
“What test?”
“We'll keep in contact with you, child,” he said running for the edge of the building.
“Wait!” He halted on the ledge itself. “What test?”
“We'll keep in contact with you, child,” he said running for the edge of the building.
“Wait!” He halted on the ledge itself. “You never told me about my brother!”
“Stupid child. You really don't see it, do you? Child, how do you think you even got Exchange? Hm? It wasn't in your deck, was it now? So how did it get into your hand?”
For the first time in my life, I was speechless. When I found my voice, I asked, “How did you know?”
“Child, let me give you a word of advice. Beware of what you do and where you do it. We have ways of knowing things about you. And with that, I bid you Goodbye!” He jumped off the ledge, and I rushed over to see if he lived, but I could see nothing of him.
