Chapter 6
A Pirate's Life
"So you want to know how we became pirates." Yami said, stroking his lip, thoughtfully. "Well, I guess that it's always best to begin at the beginning. I was born nineteen years ago-"
"Nineteen?!?" Malik gasped. "You're nineteen?!"
"We all are." Yami said, gesturing to Marik and Bakura. "How old are you three?"
"Seventeen." Malik said. "All of us." Yami nodded.
"Anyway, I was born in Portugal, but my family moved to Wales. I grew up there, and returned to Portugal myself at fourteen, to learn to sail. I was Apprenticed to an old sea captain, and learned quickly, becoming the captain of my own ship at sixteen. At this time there were wild rumors going around of a pirate stealing the gold and what not from cargo ships. It wasn't long before my ship fell under attack. And what do you know, they were part of the Portugese Armada, hired by the King to steal back money, so he wouldn't have to give up so much. I escaped, and revealed the conspiracy. But the King was ready for something like that. And he blamed me. My trial was fixed, and I was convicted of piracy, and thrown in prison.
"There, I met Marik and Bakura, and the three of us.... bonded, and found that we had the same execution date. We planned our escape. When we were taken out for our executions, we escaped. We caused a diversion, spooking horses and causing chaos, and escaped on my ship, that had been seized. We were now outcasts from society, and we soon became wanted all over the known world, so we were not safe anywhere. It was then that we decided that only way to live was as what we had been branded as; pirates. We established an island stronghold, and gathered a crew. We were attacked by a pirate ship, and fended off their attack. After a long sea battle, we called a truce, and joined forces.
"The ship, the Shadow Ghoul, was captained by a man our age named Ahmose, and his lover, Mikado. They joined us, and they are in charge of our island base. You will meet them upon our arrival. They still captain the Shadow Ghoul, patrolling the waters around our base and destroying any and all trespassers. Over half of our men reside at the island to protect it, under the command of Mikado and Ahmose. We return to our stronghold at least every three weeks, to drop off our captured goods, and the necessary supplies for our small colony."
"Is that where you keep prisoners that refuse to join you?" Malik snapped.
"No. Any prisoner who refuses to join, is eventually killed." Bakura said, with a smirk.
"How reassuring...." Malik muttered, and Bakura chuckled.
"So, what about the others?" Yugi asked, staring up at Yami in fascination.
"Marik, and Bakura? I'll let them tell their own stories. Marik?"
"Of course." Marik said, nodding. "I am from Egypt. I lived in a small village on the Nile. When I was younger, at least. But my people were peaceful, and I was not. I liked bloodshed, I liked to fight, and I was disowned and thrown out. I became a pirate. A desert pirate. I led a band of raiders, attacking caravans crossing the Sahara, and slaughtered the men and stole their goods, and their beasts. A dangerous life, yes, but very enjoyable. At least until they put together a band of bounty hunters. Slowly, my band was picked off, one by one, until I was the only one left. They hounded me relentlessly. I never stood a chance. They chased me to the point of exhaustion. Literally. When they came upon me, I could not lift a finger to fight them. They were paid the bounty on my head, and were allowed to do what they wished to me."
"W-what did they do?" Malik asked, sounding very concerned.
"They tortured me." Marik said, grimly, and Bakura glared at a random point on the wall, upset just by hearing of his friend's torment. "I was starved, beaten, mutilated and raped."
"Show them." Bakura snarled, suddenly. Marik looked at him then stood, showing his back to those present, and slowly let his shirt slide from his body. Yugi's hands flew to his mouth when he saw Marik's back, and Malik uttered a shocked cry. Ryou's mouth fell open, and his eyes softened in pity towards the angsty young man. His back was covered in markings, hieroglyphics, that had literally been carved into his back with a knife, and filled with black dye. Malik slowly stood, and reached out. Marik sucked in his breath at the gentle touches that suddenly caressed his skin, and slowly turned to look at Malik. Malik bit his lower lip upon seeing the depression in Marik's eyes, and wrapped his arms around his shoulders in a comforting embrace. Marik blinked, startled, then slowly his expression softened, and he let his hands fall to Malik's waist, and his head to Malik's shoulder.
"I'm sorry...." Malik whispered, and Marik smiled.
"It's not your fault." MArik said, and sat down again, Malik by his side.
"What happened then?" Malik asked.
"They had broken me. I had no spirit left. And they sold me as a slave to a sea captain. I was fifteen, then. I was his slave for a year and a half. And slowly, that fire in me rekindled, and one night, not unlike many, he raped me. But that night, I lost it. I threw him off of me, and stabbed him to death. I took control of the ship. They were all afraid of me. For two glorious months, I commanded that ship, and brutally slaughtered those on other ships I attacked. But I was captured, and thrown into prison. I had lost all sanity by that point. But in the prison, I met a very angry boy named Bakura." Here, he grinned at his friend, who grunted and smirked. "We became very close friends, and he helped me to regain most of my sanity."
"..... Most of?" Ryou asked. Bakura chuckled.
"Still working on the rest." He said, and Marik and Yami snickered at that.
"Without much progress, I might add." Yami chided. "And it's not a good idea for one psycho to offer therapy to another." Both boys stuck their tongues out at Yami, who grinned.
"Anyway, we had been in there for about a year, when Yami was thrown in. We became friends, and orchestrated out escape. And here we are now. And now, I believe it's Bakura's turn."
"My story is slightly similar to Marik's." Bakura said. "I am from a land called Mongolia. I was part of a nomadic village, who traveled our lands. But we were attacked by Chinese warriors, and I was taken prisoner. I was four. I was sold into a nobleman's home as a slave. I was more a show slave. I was basically there because everyone thought I was beautiful, and it made my master's rival's jealous that he had such a prize and they did not. I grew in his house, hardly ever seeing the master himself, but I became friends with his nephew, who lived there. He taught me many things. How to read and write, and how to speak English, and later, he taught me to fight. Kung Fu was the style. But then came the revolution. My master and everyone in his house was killed, and the house was burned. I was one of few who escaped. I was ten then, and I ran. I was taken in by an old man from Korea. He saw how well I had learned Kung Fu, and taught me a fighting style from his land, Tai Kwan Do. But he died when I was thirteen, and I had to leave again. I was captured from the streets, and sold as a slave, this time to a man who took me to Japan.
"I was obsessed with fighting by then, and in Japan I studied Karate, under the tuteledge of other servants who knew the arts. But when I was nearly fifteen, the master suddenly noticed how.... APPEALING I was... And he raped me. He took me in my sleep, and tied me down so I could not fight. The experience devastated me. I was made his bed slave, and the shock of the first time killed my spirit. I studied the martial arts more intensely. It became an escape. I worked my body to the point of pain, trying to drown out the mental pain. But I was too afraid to fight my master when he took me. Then, my master decided to travel west, and of course, took me with him. He lost all of his wealth gambling in India, and had to sell me to pay them off. I was passed from one master to another for the next year, steadily being sent to the west. And like Marik, my spirit was slowly returning. I was bought by a man in Italy. He was a young man, and very intelligent and educated. And I was his bed slave. On a trip to Portugal, I, like Marik, lost it, and murdered him. As soon as we arrived in Portugal, I was cast into prison. I was there for about a month, and then, Marik appeared. And you know the rest." The three boys stared at the three pirates, as if they had never seen them before. Yami sighed.
"Is that what you wanted to know?" Slowly, the trio nodded.
"You, you all began as victims..." Yugi said, quietly.
"And we changed it." Yami said. "Now, we are the predators."
"Are you proud of what you are doing?" Ryou asked.
"Hmm..." Yami said. "An interesting question... I don't know if I am proud. Let me put it this way. I am happy. Happier than I have ever been in my life." At that moment, there was a knock on the door. Yami sighed. "ENTER!" The door swung open, and Otogi entered.
"Sir, we have storm clouds on the horizon." The pirate said. Yami's eyes widened, and he stood, swiftly.
"Marik. Bakura." He said, and the pair stood as well. "Ryou, Yugi, Malik. Stay here. We'll return shortly." The four men left the room, shutting the door behind them.
