The day seemed to drag by, and Cassie was glad when she was back at Ryou's house. My house, she reminded herself. I live here too now.
She pulled a small black tin out of her almost-empty bag, which lay discarded in the corner of her new bedroom. Opening it, she pulled out her deck, which was secured with a rubber band. Doing so, her fingers brushed against the one other item she had brought for no reason. It was a necklace Cassie's mother had given her when she was very young, she couldn't remember receiving it.
Cassie carried both her deck and the necklace over to the small bed and flopped onto it. Crossing her legs beneath her, she studied the necklace. It wasn't overly ornate or fancy, just a few small charms on a thin silver chain. There were four smaller stones- pearl, smoky topaz, (Cassie's birthstone) jade, and moonstone. The fifth stone was slightly larger, and set in the middle of the necklace, with two of the smaller stones on each side. It was an onyx, carved into the shape of a bird. Although it was small, it was beautiful.
Cassie traced the jewels absentmindedly, furrowing her brow in thought. She had certainly never worn the necklace- being a tomboy, she had never worn jewelry in her life- yet something inside told her she had to hold onto it. But what reason could she have for keeping something she knew she'd never use?
Because my mother gave it to me, she instinctively answered herself. That's why. Deep down, though, Cassie felt like there was another reason.
Suddenly she was gripped by a desire to put it on. Just once, just to see what would happen.
You're crazy, she told herself, fingering the delicate chain. The stress of the duel has gotten to you. You've flipped.
Put it on, something within her whispered.
No! Why should I?
But her body had a different idea. Almost on their own, Cassie's hands lifted and fastened the necklace around her neck. She lowered her hands and waited.
Nothing. The tiny stones felt cold against Cassie's bare throat. This is stupid, she thought. Why am I doing this? I should be reviewing my deck, getting ready for tomorrow.
"Not that I need to," Cassie muttered, reaching up to her neck to remove the jewelry. "What's the use? I know I'm gonna get stomped."
Her hands were almost there when it happened. Her fingertips brushed the clasp-
<She is coming>
Cassie jerked back her hands in shock. That voice- she had just heard a voice in her head!
She looked around wildly, searching for the source of the voice. It had seemed to come from all around her- velvety and harsh all at once.
Suddenly everything went black. Cassie felt herself spinning into an abyss. Darkness swirled around her, consuming her-
Then she saw them.
Two bright, shining golden eyes, locked onto hers, beaming like headlights of a car, staring-
"No!"
Cassie wasn't sure whether it was she who screamed or not. Her eyes snapped open, and her hands flew to her throat. The necklace burned under her fingers.
As if she had suddenly awoken from a nightmare, Cassie came to her senses. She ripped the necklace from her throat and hurled it onto the pillow. It lay there, looking perfectly harmless against the off-white of the pillowcase.
Cassie scooted to the other edge of the bed and stared at the necklace. She felt her blood pounding in her ears. What the hell had just happened? She ran a hand nervously through her silky textured hair, tugging unaware at a tangle. That voice- and then the darkness- and those eyes-
"Stop it!" Cassie said firmly to the empty room. Damn, she had to get a grip. No way she needed to be this stressed out about a stupid card game. If she lost, she lost. That's all there was to it.
"Way to go, Cassie," she muttered sarcastically to herself. "You just had to pick a duel with a world champion, didn't you? Maybe next you can cover yourself in steak sauce and walk up to a pit bull."
She slid off the bed and walked over to the other end. The necklace seemed to be looking up at her. Cassie reached out tentatively, grasping it with two fingers. She hurriedly stuffed it under the pillow, grabbed her deck, and sunk back onto the bed with it.
As much as Cassie wanted to believe what had happened was just a hallucination, she couldn't. Yes, she was different. In a big way. But did that mean now that whenever she got stressed she would start seeing illusions and hearing voices in her head?
She concentrated hard on her cards, not aware of the tears blurring her vision until they spilled over and ran down her cheeks. She threw the deck to the ground and watched the cards hit the floor and scatter. She didn't care. Frustrated, she punched her pillow angrily before burying her tear-streaked face in it. Her shoulders shook as the salty liquid seeped into the sheets.
Damn you, God, she cursed silently. Why does everything have to happen to me?
