Chapter 20: The Papers

I sit in our little room and watch as you bring me the book and some tea. I was sick again and stuck in bed. With a smile I accept the tea and book and we begin to read…

Yumi fumbled with her keys and entered the house. She knew no one would be home today after school. Yami had something after school and her parents had a meeting with some friends. Ryou was working again today, Malik had said he was busy going somewhere (Yumi guessed it had something to do with Marik), and Yugi had something to do after school as well, a report if she remembered it correctly.

Yumi walked into her room and found a huge packet addressed to her. This one, however, had a State Seal on it. She'd seen it many times before at her friend's mom's work place. Meaning this seemed to be the adoption papers. She pried it open while collapsing onto her bed. She began reading the official papers but decided not to bother with them. Instead she found a smaller letter inside also addressed to her in Mrs. Vakwitch's handwriting.

Dear Yumi Sakura/Moto,

Hey Sweety. This letter is included to put into simple words what that huge packet of official papers says. So that you can continue your education here in the U.S.A. we had to find you a foster family if you remember that. If you also think back you chose for us to find you a foster family. I think you would like this arrangement, all the legal things or most of the legal things have been taken care of. Your new name would be, Yumi Sakura Vaskwitch. We had it all cleared out and it is on its way to some officials who will do the final touches. If you do not wish to come here please send us an e-mail alright. In case you do come, and we hear nothing from you prior to that the date of your departure will be March 15th.

Hope to see you soon,

Mrs. Vakwitch.

Yumi put the letter down and couldn't stop a grin from forming. She had wanted to live with her friend after her parent's death. Her grin faded as she thought of what she would leave behind. At first she had been devastated to leave America and now she couldn't help but feel a little sad at the idea of leaving Japan.

`But… I really want to go back home…and on the other hand… things here are nice…' Yumi contemplated and turned over in her bed with a groan.

An hour later at the school Yugi walked through the school scanning his report. It had been on their school's sport department. Yugi had almost refused the job when they had given it to him. He stuffed it in his backpack and began to walk to the gate. He was almost out when someone called his name. He turned around and saw Yami waving at him. Yami caught up to Yugi quickly seeing as Yugi was too surprised to move. Since when did Yami with “free will” talk to him.

“Hey Yugi,” Yami said as he caught up to him.

“Uh….hey?” Yugi replied unsure of the reason that he had been stopped.

“Yumi asked you to come over today. I'm just the messenger,” Yami replied as he glanced around to make sure no one saw this interaction.

“Since when do you do what Yumi tells you?” Yugi asked.

A brief silence filled the air before Yami replied, “Today is a one time thing.”

Yugi nodded while rolling his eyes. Yami had to have a hidden motive and he was going to find out what.

“Okay fine so Yumi didn't want you to come over, I did,” Yami admitted finally.

Yugi stared for a few moments, too shocked to speak. “Oh….why?”

Yami shifted his feet before answering, “I want a re-match.”

Yugi burst into laughter. Yami had stopped him because he wanted a re-match? He had never expected this but then again it wasn't his job to know what Yami did and why he thought.

“Alright but I left my deck at the Shop,” Yugi said still laughing slightly.

“This isn't funny, and I do have a car in case you forgot,” Yami shot at him, annoyed that the younger boy wasn't taking him seriously.

“Oh, but it's okay really. I usually walk home from school,” Yugi said hastily.

“Walk? Your house is 10 blocks away,” Yami said confused.

“I know but Grandpa doesn't have time to drop me off so I walk. Besides the busses that come anywhere near there come the moment school starts,” Yugi explained.

“…I'm still driving you, to save time,” Yami said as he grabbed Yugi's arm and began dragging him towards the parking lot.

“Wait…but…no...,” Yugi said as they reached Yami's car.

“Get in and stop whining, you're giving me a headache,” Yami said.
Without any more interruptions Yugi's deck had been retrieved and the pair was already inside the Moto house.

“Hey Yumi! We're home!” Yami announced as he threw his key on a desk.

They heard the sound of rushed footsteps and within minutes Yumi was standing at the top of the stairs, “We're?”

Yami stepped aside to reveal Yugi. Yumi's face split into a very wide grin.

“Oooh, hello Yugi,” Yumi said walking down the stairs, “why would you be here today?”

Yugi gave a small smile, “Yami wanted a re-match.”

`At this rate my plan will be fulfilled in no time,' Yumi thought as Yugi and Yami disappeared into his room.

I close the book and take one last sip of my tea. This complicates things doesn't it. I watch as you glance at your clock worried and jump up. You take the book and put it on my night stand before hurrying out the door yelling your mother will kill you.
