Yami Bakura sneered with such intensity that he seemed to outshine the blinding white hospital room itself.

He stalked snake-like over to Bakura's bed and snorted in discust at his hikari, clearly not amused.

" so, what did you three losers do today? I see some one has tried to improve you looks Ryou." He smirked, crossing his arms.

Bakura's revealed eye welled with tears. He rolled over and buried his head as far under the crisp hospital sheets would let him, trying to drown out the voice of his tormentor.

Joey glared at the Yami, amber eyes burning with flames of hatred and loathing.

" oh, and I suppose you think that it's the right thing to do, going crazy and killing all of your classmates?" he snarled, lundging forward, grabbing the sneering Yami by the front of his shirt.

Yami Bakura swatted away his hand effortlessly, and then raised an eyebrow at the quivering lump that was trying to suffocate itself with its pillow.

" oh for the love of Ra. Stop trying to swallow your damned pillow and pull your head out from under that bloody sheet they call a blanket." He grumbled, shoving Joey away. Grumbleing profanities to himself, he grabbed at the blanket, yanking it free, briefly tussling with the hospital corners of the sheets, which wouldn't pull free from under the mattress.

Bakura sobbed pitifully into the pillow, shoulders shaking as if a small earthquake was going on in his heart. He hugged the pillow protectively, holding onto it for dear life when his Yami yanked it away, scowling bitterly.

He crossed his arms, a frown forming on his face when Bakura began to sob meekly into the mattress, ignoring him. He turned slightly to Joey, casting a quiet glance around the small cramped room, catching a quick glimpse of Kaiba lying under another sheet-like blanket, looking pale compared to the overhead lights.

" What exactly happened?" he asked, suddenly taking interest in the situation.

Joey sneered at him, crossing his arms as rigidly as he could, and then gave up, the stress of having to relive the shattered memories being too much to hold in.

" Tristan and a few other kids… went trigger happy, and… killed our entire class… and probably most of the school…" he mumbled, looking down at his feet, ashamed once more.

Yami Bakura looked shocked.

" You're kidding… Tristan Taylor, that little yellow-bellied dipstick actually went crazy and killed someone? There's no way your telling the truth." He chuckled, shaking his head, tossing his hair.

When he saw the look in Joey's eyes, the deep depressed lost at sea look, he changed his opinion. He took a longing glance at Bakura, who was shivering and trembling, and then sat leisurely on the corner of the bed, limbs collected casually on his lap.

Bakura turned around, tears streaking down his face in rapids, and suddenly, he found himself in Yami Bakura's arms. The Yami patiently patted him on the back, rubbing slow circles, a sigh escaping him with exasperated implications.

" Alright. I'll find him and kill him. If that's what you want Ryou." He said loudly, releasing the boy, who stared at him, looking emboldened.

Joey's eyes narrowed into slits.

" What?"

Yami Bakura smirked dangerously.

" No one hurts my hikari and gets away from it…" he frowned suddenly, then paled a little. " not that I care a damn anyway."

*************************************************************** *********

Seto Kaiba woke up to hear the peaceful, yet jarring sounds of machinery beeping light marches.

The sheets were stiff, as if having been either left in a freezer too long, or having been starched, much like his side; which burned with a painless fire. The bandages wrapped around his waist told him that it would be soon when the pain returned, flashing and burning like an inferno of demons. He rolled over, eyes taking in a full scene of white, varying ranges of white to be precise, the kind of white that reminded him of one of those old horror movies where the victim was left in an insanity ward after it was finished.

Soon, he was forced to squeeze his eyes shut, unable to take in the intensity of the white, and soon found that the white was now accompanied by flashes of red, little gnawing flashes that he wished wasn't there. It reminded him of all the blood he'd seen that day… all the mists of red…

He grimaced and then took a deep breath, exhaling slowly as he saw Joey sleeping with a peaceful look painfully etched on his features. It was beautiful, his hair seemed almost golden in hue under the blaring hospital lights, his every feature seemed sharper…

Kaiba looked around and then saw that the bed beside him was empty, the blankets wrinkled and creased, the hospital corners horribly mangled.

He caught sight of Yami Bakura snoozing in a small patch of sunlight that had poured quiet and peaceful through the window in the corner, its beam warming the coldness and gloom that seemed to radiate from the very floor.

He couldn't help but smile to himself when Joey rolled over in his chair, falling face first to the floor, not even waking up from the shock of the fall.

He must have taken a lot of abuse to be able to sleep like this after what happened… he thought, noticing that Yami Bakura had moved a little more, as if subconsciously chasing the beam of sunlight.

He sighed, head sinking back into the pillowy softness of the rock hard pillow lying beneath his head.

He had always hated hospitals, ever since the day of the day of the accident; the accident that had claimed his parent's lives. Everything had stunk of disinfectant and blood… it had felt like he was lying in the very bowels of hell itself.

The blanket began to itch as it hugged his chest, making him shift it a little with his arm, sending a twinge down his side. Apparently the painkillers were running out… he grumbled to himself.

He frowned, closing his eyes, feeling the lights bleach his skin an even paler colour, noticing the increasingly amplifying sound of wailing and crying coming from overcrowded hallway. He noticed a nurse slip in to adjust the covers on the second bed, pulling it open, and suddenly a gurney came squeaking and rolling in, the wheels wobbling, making it seem more like a drunken metal monster then a gurney. Someone lying sleeping on its top wrapped in a thin blanket shivered as the wheels hit a bump in the floor, nearly spilling the sleeper to the floor.

He watched for a few moments, and then recognized the mane of white hair.

So it was Bakura lying in that pile… he thought, eyeing the nurse.

He cleared his throat as loudly as he could, and instantly to his amusement she was at his side.

" Mr. Kaiba! We're sorry, but the hospital didn't' have any private rooms left, please don't' be upset… we'll try to find someplace for you that's up to your standards soon. I assure you sir." She bowed her head, sounding childish and mousy, and perhaps a little strained.

He nodded business-like at her. " Don't worry about that. Have there been any messages sent to the hospital concerning my brother Mokuba's safety?" he asked.

The nurse nodded, plucking the clipboard that was hanging from the edge of the bed free, casually flipping through it, eyes downcast.

" Well?" He growled, impatience blasting apart her well-built shield. She shook her head, and then responded in halting words.

" Your brother is at home Mr. Kaiba. We suggested that he not come to visit, due to the magnitude of people in the hospital. I believe I was told that he skipped out of school to sneak in here, but security took him back to you home." Her voice sounded hollow, strangely empty.

Kaiba guessed that she must have had either a son or daughter who had been at Domino high school… possibly she was even the mother of a murdered child, or to one of the murderers.

Kaiba nodded in understanding, then asked another question.

" And what about Bakura, over there? Why did you move him, he came in at - "

He broke off as the nurse bowed her head.

" Mr. Kaiba, Mr. Bakura has just returned from an eye operation. We are very understaffed at the moment, and it's taken us a while to get him to an eye specialist. I suggest that you ask your friends about this later sir, besides, you should rest now, you've had a long day." She swept out of the room, vanishing into the pandemonium and noise of the hall.

This really is hell~ Kaiba thought dryly, once more looking to Joey for support.

Once more, he saw that the boy was sprawled out angelically on the cold floor, and he was shivering ever so slightly, as if remembering something.

Kaiba smiled. The boy looked absolutely delightful and undignified lying there on the floor. He wished he could sweep the boy up off the floor and lay him, sleeping, across his lap, to hug and hold for at least a few seconds, but a his mind told him to let it got for now.

Perhaps later…

He closed his eyes, sinking back into a half dream sponsored state, waking when Joey brushed back his hair, his warm hand a startling contrast to his cold brow.

His eyelids fluttered open, and a pink blush powdered his cheeks, cerulean blue eyes locking on Joey's honey-amber eyes.

Joey smiled down at him, pulling a chair over to the bedside with one foot, nearly toppling over when it caught on Yami Bakura's foot, causing the spirit to swat at him with one hand.

Embarrassedly, he nodded to Yami Bakura, who had woken up looking a tad disgruntled, but no more then usual. Joey dropped marionette like into the chair, arms hanging jauntily at his sides, his one hand still touching Kaiba's forehead, his fingers unconsciously caressing the smooth skin.

Kaiba reached up and took Joey's hand in his own, feeling the slender fingers of the youth delicately brush his palm. He turned his head, hair falling around his face in whisps.

" Are you alright?"

Joey nodded, scratching his head; turning to look at Bakura's chemically induced sleeping form, a deep dread building in his eyes, which Kaiba could read like a computer instruction manual. He squeezed Joey's hand lightly, but firmly.

" it's not your fault… none of us moved to stop him… not even me… we couldn't do anything… but hope not to die." He whispered softly.

Joey turned back and locked eyes with Kaiba shaking his head.

" I didn't' even speak to him, I didn't even try… only .. I only spoke to save my own life… not even to save my friends… all I did was try to save my own worthless hide… I don't deserve to live… to have escaped without a scratch to my name…" He bowed his head in shame, head in his hands.

Kaiba chuckled, causing Joey to frown, confused.

" I don't get what's so funny Kaiba - " he growled, and was cuffed lightly on the hand by the young C.E.O.

" Wheeler, you were lucky. We all were. It was the luck of the draw, that's all. We could have all died out there, screaming and cursing, but we got out. All that matters now is that we find where they are, where those stinking murderers are, and we put them to justice." Kaiba said, eyes half closing

Joey snorted bitterly.

" you really think it's going to be that easy, don't you… but then again, you never heard that they've already gone on a spree of murder… and they're absolutely impossible to kill… they've already killed the police. All we can do is wait to die."

Kaiba frowned.

" well then, we'll just have to find them ourselves… and with luck we'll get them before they get us. They won't dare to try and break into my mansion. They won't make it past security. I've programmed it myself… and they'll never guess the pass code." He smirked to himself and squeezed Joey's hand.

" Besides, " Yami Bakura said, rising up from his chair, clenching and unclenching his fists. " they haven't got me on their side. And with the help of the millennium puzzle, I'll be undefeated-"

Joey chuckled. " I don't think so crazy boy. I'm not handing the millennium over to you, you psychopath. You'll probably kill us all - " he rolled his eyes, crossing his legs.

Yami Bakura smiled delicately at him, cracking his knuckles with menacing ease, His chocolate brown eyes gleaming with amusement.

" And what, may I ask, will stop me from taking it from you?" He drawled, voice slippery like oil.

Joey jabbed his chest with one finger, proudly puffing out his chest. "Me, that's who!"

Yami Bakura snorted; looking ready to start laughing so hard his ribs would crack.

He reached out, flicking Joey in the nose, making the teen's eyes water.

" What makes you think I'll even have a challenge, beating you?" he asked, crossing his arms.

Joey snarled and moved forward, grabbing Yami Bakura by the shirt once more, and was yet again swatted away. Kaiba sighed and closed his eyes, trying to block out the banter, head throbbing with misery.

" Would you two cut it out already! I've got a headache and Bakura over there just came back from his operation." He grumbled.

At that, both teenagers fell silent and looked at their feet, embarrassment clouding their eyes. Yami Bakura sighed and scratched his head, looking at Bakura, who lay still sleeping on his bed.

" I suppose this can wait… but you do know the best way to get rid of those idiots all at once is to use the shadow magic locked in the millennium items. If I can unlock the powers - " he broke off when Bakura rolled over, nearly falling off the bed.

Before anyone could say anything, Yami Bakura was at his side, propping the sleeper up, pulling a chair from the sidewall so that he could sit beside his Hikari.

Joey sighed, shoulders slumping in defeat.

" I dunno. I don't think I like the idea of letting some shadow magic stuff run loose…"

" Well, you won't have to worry about it for now Wheeler. It takes seven millennium items to unlock the door, and all I have is the eye and the ring. Of course, if someone could get me the other items, I could make those idiots pay for their disrespect to my Hikari." Yami Bakura said quietly.

" I see you never let anything let you get your mind off the millennium items, do you?" Joey snarled, shaking his fist in Yami Bakura's direction.

Yami Bakura chuckled, resting his head on his hands. " you would like to think so, wouldn't you, Wheeler, but despite my best efforts to think that way, I still have human emotions, you mortal yam."

Bakura moaned in his sleep, slipping the blanket off; and Yami Bakura promptly rearranged the sheets, tucking them in. The light that dove through the window pearled across the floor, like an angel falling from heaven.

It was a full three days before they were released from the hospital. Due to the enormous amount of casualties and incoming victims from the massacre, many of the nurses had encouraged the departure of people with small injuries, and since Kaiba's side was pretty much healing well already, they had dismissed them.

Much to Kaiba's immense relief, Mokuba was allowed to come for a few visits, accompanied by some of Kaiba's special security guards.

There was a mingling feeling of upset in the air as Yami Bakura helped Bakura walk out of the hospital doors, holding his hand at arms length, trying to help guide him without actually touching him.

Of course Bakura could see right through the entire act, and was smiling, despite the sadness in his heart. Even Joey was helping Kaiba walk out of the hospital, but once they all reached the first corner, they realized that they would be separated, perhaps permanently.

Luckily, Kaiba helped solve the problem with one single statement.

" why don't you all come and… must say this before I regret it… live with me and Mokuba."

Yami Bakura nodded once in agreement, unable to come up with anything better then a gesture. ( it was either that or a grunt, and he didn't really didn't feel annoyed enough to grunt.)

Bakura on the other hand looked practically ecstatic, considering the situation.

He clapped his, accidentally banging Yami Bakura's hand into his own. He smiled apologetically at the overbearing disgruntled Yami, who sighed and rolled his eyes, trying to cover his face with his hand.

Due to the operation Bakura had received, the doctors had told him he wouldn't be able to remove the bandages for another two days, and thus, he would have to have someone walking around with him to make sure that the didn't run into anyone or anything. This had resulted in much dismay on Yami Bakura's part; but secretly, Bakura knew that it wasn't so much dismay, as secret amusement.

*************************************************************** *********

What will happen when they get to Kaiba's mansion? Will things work out all right? Will Yami Bakura try to steal the millennium puzzle, or will they find another way to stop Tristan before its too late? And what will happen with Bakura's new eye? What might it encompass?
