Two in the morning and Ryou was alone. Well not alone. He had his yami after all but he had wished for better company. Night was always the hardest time of the day. Sleep eluded him for reasons unknown and he found himself pondering the mysteries of the world. Such as the ever popular 'Why does Yugi's hair stand straight up?' Followed closely by 'Why does everyone have an obsession with calling Jou a dog?'
Tonight's train of thoughts were different. For tonight's thoughts were memories. It was oddly fitting that the one who had started this all was the one he had the least contact with now.
~flashback~
"Why?"
"Why do you always ask that? You know why."
"But I thought..."
"What? That it mattered in the grand scheme of life? Even you can't be that naive."
"It hurts."
"It's meant to hurt Ryou. It's supposed to. Pain is the only way of knowing that you're really alive."
"I don't want it to."
"That's life love. You'll get over it."
"I..."
"Hush now."
Gentle fingers were placed over his mouth. Dark brown eyes shut as he felt the blade trace a path along his palm following his heart line. It would hurt. It always did but in the end it was worth it. Even if it hadn't been he would of continued going to the other. It was an addiction he had to feed. The need to feel the other touch him. To feel the hot dash of blood before the warm tongue was there licking in away as if apologizing for hurting him. The bite of the blade alone was beginning to be worth it.The fingers moved from his mouth to his hair when a whimper forced it's way out of his throat.
"It'll be over soon love" the voice whispered.
Ryou tilted his head back. The room was lit only by candles but if he tried hard enough he could make out the details. A light kiss on his arm alerted him to the fact that the boy was still there. "Done?"
The other nodded. "Do you ever regret it?"
He wiped the blood away with the sleeve of his shirt. Another scar. Another drawing. "Why would I?"
A hesitation on the others part. A breath and then another. "I just want to make you feel it."
"Feel what?" The confusion had set in again.
"The way I love you."
It made sense. In a strange demented way it made sense. After all it was the only way the other was shown love. It was only natural that it would be the way he returned it. The pain was exquisite. "I know."
"What do you know?" A warm weight snuggled against his chest.
"Everything" he replied wrapping his arms around his broken love. "Everything but what I need to."
~end of flashback~
He still didn't know what he needed to know. His blue eyed lover had been left behind when his father had decided that it was time for another change. Another move.
A shadow moved behind him, shifting and taking shape. "Ryou?"
"Hmm?"
"Why are you still awake?"
"Dunno."
"Well then go to bed baka" Bakura hissed cuffing the back of his lights head in an effort to knock him over.
Ryou took the blow with the calmness of one who had been hit often. He knew the rules. You didn't let them hurt you too bad but you didn't ask for more than they already had planned. It was a lesson Bakura had taught him well. "Yes Yami."
Moonlight played across his pale features as he climbed onto the bed curling up on top of the blankets. One finger moved restlessly over the scar on his leg as he drifted off. His dreams that night were filled with images of the picture on his leg and the one who had carved it there.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~~*~
"Ryou where are you?"
He sat silently head downcast as he let his friend call to him. White bang hid troubled brown eyes.
"Ryou?" A slight edge of worry had crept into the voice.
"I'm over here."
Yugi turned the corner and ran right into Ryou. Hands caught him as he feel and he couldn't help but cry out in surprise.
"Are you okay?" Ryou brushed blonde bangs out of the violet eyes that always held so much emotion.
"I'm fine." He didn't even attempt to move away from Ryou's grasp. Surprisingly it felt right in away to be held so carefully by someone who wasn't Yami. "I'm just clumsy."
"I'm sorry. I'm just clumsy I guess."
His grip tightened involuntarily causing him to pull Yugi closer. He had heard those words before.
A gentle squirming made his thoughts crash back to earth. "Sorry" he mumbled releasing his hold on the smaller boy.
"It's okay. Hey Ryou we need to talk about something."
Ryou pulled his shirt sleeves over his hands in a desperate attempt to keep from grabbing Yugi again and crushing his mouth onto those pouting lips. "So talk."
"Not here. Grandpa has someone coming over tonight and well you know. Can we go to your house?"
'Shit' Tempting ideas began to form in his mind. He shook his head, causing all the marching hormones to quit for a moment so he could answer. "Sure. My dad's not home yet so it'll be quiet."
