Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Don't Fall Away ❯ Demons Within ( Chapter 1 )
Alright peoples, it's another Yami angst with Yami/Anzu romance in it. If you don't like the couples then leave. And about my other stories
---
Disclaimer: I do not own Yugioh. If I did, Yami would the same height as Seto Kaiba, the English dub would be a direct translation of the Japanese series with no cuts, Yami would have kissed Tea a long time ago, in the Egyptian Memories Arc Yami would've been shirtless and wearing the red cape instead of the purple one and when Yami left Anzu would've confessed her love to Atem!
*sigh* A girl can dream right?
---
After a duel that nearly costs him his life, Yami falls into a deep depression to go along with the one he already has. He seems unreachable, but there's one person who won't let him slip away.
---
The dark clouds had dampened the mood on an otherwise pleasant day. Fortunately, it was the beginning of Summer break, and for the group of friends enjoying a pizza, few things could dampen their mood.
"Shit, Jou, the pizza's not goin' anywhere so you can stop hoggin' it" Honda stared in disbelief as his friend inhaled six slices of pizza.
"Leave me alone...I live to eat..."
Everyone else in the room just chuckled. They had all stopped eating half an hour before and where just enjoying each other's company. Yugi and Mai where sitting at the coffee table discussing strategies, Anzu. Shizuka and Ryou where watching T.V., and Bakura was stealing pizza slices when Jou wasn't looking. Had he noticed, Bakura would probably be in the bathroom nursing a broken nose. That just left Yami to think about.
He was there; leaning against the far corner of the wall in his usual defensive posture with his arms crossed. Having a body gave the former Pharaoh independence and a sense of solitude that sometimes scared him. He no longer shared a link with Yugi, and was now free to have his own thoughts without interruption or worry that someone might criticize him for it. Adjustment to the modern-day world had come rather easily, and he found he had more time to think. With the past now in the past, Yami focused on things that we would take advantage of or take for granted. The color of emotions or the sounds of everyday life fascinated him. Joy couldn't even begin to describe his new fascination for this would. Despite this, his quiet demeanor and emotionless expression hid the turmoil of emotions that quaked his inner being. It was two above them all that when joined together would rob him of sleep and deprive him of his composure: Death and loneliness.
He often cursed himself for such thoughts. Someone with all the friends someone could want and had overcome death twice wouldn't possibly think such things. Right?...The truth was, these where things that haunted Yami. He had cheated death twice. Once by sealing himself in the puzzle and twice when the items where destroyed and his body was separated from Yugi's. He overcame death, but for some reason, it wouldn't leave him alone. He felt as he shouldn't be here; alive. He felt as if his true purpose was to die.
And what of his friends?
He had heard Yugi talk about college and "going separate ways." Where was his way? He certainly couldn't follow Yugi all his life. The boy had his own future and dreams. His "friends" where the only people he new in this world and the only ones he trusted. Without them he often times felt lost. At Yugi's school, he had made his share of allies but what would happen when they left? Where was his place? What would happen when the time came to leave? What would he do?
So, it was there in his quiet corner that Yami Mouto ran these thoughts through his brain, until a gentle voice broke him out of his mind.
"Yami? You ok?"
Yami looked over in the direction of the voice. It was Anzu.
"I'm ok."
"You still thinkin' about Aaron?" Jou's voice rang through the room.
Ah yes, Aaron. Yami had refused to think about him after the incident the last day of school.
"Who's Aaron?"
"Well, unless you've been livin' in a hole Ryou..." Jou turned to his friend. "Aaron's---"
"An asshole." Interrupted Honda,
"That wasn't what I was gonna say but thanks for fillin' in for me."
"No Aaron's this hotshot guy who's been tryin' to kick Yami's tail at duelin' ever since the Battle City Finals. Yami wiped the floor with him the first time they met up. Second time he got a little better but Yami still beat him."
"What's the big deal? Yami's beat guys before, how's this one any different."
"He picks on little amateur duelists and takes their cards after a duel. And, he hates gettin' beat. It's rumored that he paid Kaiba to give him is rarest cards just so he could beat Yami. They say Kaiba's trainin' him to be a better duelist."
"It'll never work. Guy's a dickhead." Honda laughed at his own comment"
"Anyway's things got heated up when He tried to challenge Yami to a duel in the last day of school, but Yami turned him down."
"You what?!" Ryou turned around to look at Yami. Yami's face remained emotionless.
"Dude, it was the day that Yami got laryngitis and the flu at the same time remember? He felt like shit. Threw up a couple of times and fainted. I think he went home early that day didn't you?" Jou directed the question at Yami who simply nodded.
"Point is Aaron got so pissed, went up to Yami and wanted to beat the shit outta him. He even threatened him sayin' that he'll pay for makin' him look like a fool."
"All because he wouldn't duel him?"
`Yup."
Anzu entered the conversation. "Then the day after, Aaron got into a fight with Yami as payback for the day before."
"Wait a minute. If you were sick, how did you two get in a fight?"
"Were on the way home from the doctor's office; Aaron was waiting on our door-step." Yugi turned his attention towards the ongoing conversation.
"I happened to be stopping by to see if Sogoroku need help. I also happened to see the fight. You fight pretty well for a guy who's sick." Anzu looked at Yami with a blush. He gave her a soft look and turned back to look at Jou.
"True dat. Yami kicked his ass." Yami chuckled inwardly looking down at his still-bruised knuckles. It felt good to his someone. Not that he was always looking for fights, but to feel his fist collide with the face of the person he despised the most gave him a sense of pride and power he hadn't felt before. He could duel and fight. Who knew?
"Have you heard from him Yami? Ryou asked Yami.
Yami just nodded his head no.
Having been broken out of his thoughts, Yami broke from his corner and headed to his room. Anzu followed him with her eyes. She was one of the only people besides Yugi, who noticed the change in his behavior. Questions would be answered with a nod, or dismissed with a simple yes or no. Smiles where rare and replaced with vacant looks and blank expressions; expressions that meant he was lost in his thoughts. It would take minutes to break him out of his trances, and they would struggle to get him to say something even if it was one word. He was indeed lost, but it also seemed as if he didn't want to be found.
----
Determined to help, Anzu quietly made her way up the stairs to Yami's room. A quiet knock was responded by a barely audible "come in."
"Hey Yami."
He looked up at her with the same blank look as before. His voice was the only thing that dictated his mood.
"Hey Anzu." He motioned for her to sit down. She accepted and sat in the desk chair across from him. She noticed his head slumped looking down at his hands in his lap.
"Penny for your thoughts?"
Yami looked up at her. "I'm ok."
Anzu was getting tired. "No you're not." Yami's head slowly raised and his eyes met hers.
"Why are you so depressed Yami this isn't like you...if it's about Aaron don't worry about him he's-" She was interrupted by Yami.
"It's not him" His tone was harsh; defensive.
"Then why are---" She was interrupted again.
"It's nothing...just---I'm tired, but it's nothing. Just leave me alone." Yami got up from the bed and walked over to the window crossing his arms. He had assumed the defensive posture again.
"Yami...." Anzu wasn't giving up that easily.
"Just...leave me alone! You can't do anything to help me so leave!...you wouldn't understand..." His last words were barely a whisper but she heard them loud and clear. She walked over to him and searched for his face, his eyes, something.
"What wouldn't I understand?" She felt her eyes sting. She hated seeing him like this. He turned violently towards her and she noticed something in his eyes she hadn't seen before: rage.
"YOU JUST CAN'T!! SO LEAVE ME ALONE!"
Anzu stopped breathing and let out a slight whimper. The rage in Yami's eyes left as soon as he realized what he did.
"Anzu, I'm..." It was too late. She had run out of his room in tears.
