Chapter One: How Far to Disaster?

"Look Rachel. I understand that you're annoyed as all heck. But do you really have to hold me quite so tightly?" Tomas Starling squirmed in the head-lock his best friend had put him in. His black hair was messy and his green eyes were wide. A most undignified look for the son of Starling Enterprises' president.

Rachel Summers snorted and released him. "Fine," she sighed. "Have it your way, Tomas." She ran a hand through her mousy hair and winked one blue-green eye at a passing classmate. "I'll let that conniving, sneaky, egotistical bully live for the moment." She clenched a fist and gritted her teeth. "But if that jerk messes with me one more time, so help me I'll... I'll... I'll hit him in the mouth so hard, it'll wake up his dentist!"

Mizuno Takane rolled her grey eyes at Rachel. "Oh real nice, Rachie," she snickered. "Like Darian's gonna be scared of a threat like that! How pathetic..." She doubled over, laughing her head off. "Excuse me," she choked out between giggles. "Even I wouldn't be scared of something like that!"

Tomas hid a grin behind his hand and shook a finger at his half-sister. "Oh come on, Mizu. You haven't been chased around the school building twice by that bully. Give Rachel a break."

Rachel frowned and cracked her knuckles loudly. "You wanna see just why you should be scared, Mizu?" She grinned wickedly and advanced on her friend.

Tomas sweatdropped. "Uh, better start running," he said. "Rachel looks pretty pissed off right now." Mizuno started backing away from her friend at that point, a sheepish grin on her face.

The figure lurking in the shadows laughed softly to itself at the three's antics. "Soon," it hissed to itself. "Very soon they will have something more to deal with than their own petty affairs." It frowned and cocked an ear to the wind. "Now what are those idiots doing?" It swept away from the schoolyard of Shinan Private Academy and headed off east. Something gold flashed in a shaft of sunlight before the figure was gone. Unbeknownst to everyone in Domino City, an ill wind was about to start blowing; a wind that could destroy not only them, but the entire world.

To say that Mateo wasn't having a good day would have been the understatement of the century. He hit the floor again, feeling nothing but waves of pain traveling across his entire body. He bit his lower lip in an attempt to keep from screaming out, because that would only encourage his attackers to continue. He curled up in a ball and flung his hands over his head. He heard a whimper, as if from an injured animal. It took him several seconds to realize that it he was the one who was making that pitiful noise.

The thugs backed off thankfully. Mateo risked peeking out from under his arms and immediately wished he hadn't. A tall boy stood looking down at him, a sneer plastered on his face. Sandy blonde hair framed his tanned face. "Pick him up, you idiots," he hissed at the thugs.

Mateo was hauled roughly to his feet, being poked in the ribs a few times in the process. Pretty soon the 12-year old boy was eye to eye with the newcomer (a position Mateo was very nervous about). The boy narrowed his amethyst eyes at the frightened captive and sighed. "So what's your name, kid?"

Mateo was so surprised by the question that he couldn't stop his mouth from answering. "M-Mateo Conner. Who-who're you?" He averted his brown eyes and looked at the ground inches below his feet.

The boy only laughed unpleasantly and stepped away from the dangling Mateo. "That's not really important." The thugs seemed nervous somehow, shifting from one foot to the other. One cleared his throat and started inching out of the alleyway.

The other boy gave him a seething glare. "And just where are you going?" His voice was cold enough to freeze salt water at ten paces. Mateo stifled a shudder and started praying silently. Get me out of here, oh Hyne get me out of here...

The thug cleared his throat. "Uh, nowhere. I was just leaving, Malik. I-" He suddenly cut off and made a very strained gurgling noise in his throat. Mateo noticed his eyes were widened and fearful before they glazed over.

Malik gave the now zoned-out thug a smug nod before turning back to Mateo. The sight of it had jolted the boy out of his silent prayers to whoever might be listening in. "Now," he said sinisterly. "You are going to be very useful, Conner." Mateo noticed with some dread the pointy golden staff now hovering a millimeter from his neck. "So don't fight and this will go much easier."

Mateo was barely aware of the staff glowing before it began. The sheer force of someone trying to get into his head was enough to keep any sane thoughts from his mind. Even after Mateo was gone, his screams of agony echoed through the streets of Domino City.
