Dueling Love
Shy Mystery Part 1
After school ended, Annaara walked straight home. Her family had moved into a one story house not far from the high school. It was only two miles away. When she walked in the door Annaara went to her room. After completing all her homework, including the report on Scotland, she finished unpacking her stuff. She placed different scrolls on her book shelf and set her pottery in various spots around the room. When the room was arranged to her liking, she walked to the kitchen to help her mother cook.
Her mother had long dark brown hair and her face was slightly weathered from the desert sands. She turned her brown eyes to Annaara. Annaara quickly bowed her head and set to work.
"How was your day at school, Annaara?" her mother asked. The girl looked up from her vegetable to look at her mother.
"It wasn't that bad. The work was more difficult than I thought," she replied in a flat tone.
"Did you meet any new people?"
"Not really," she said. "I just collided with some guy and muttered sorry. Then he walked off." Mrs. Neferti sighed and at looked at her daughter. Before she could say another word, her husband came in.
"Hello, Antra," he said in a pleasant voice. Both Annaara and Antra bowed their heads while Mr. Neferti walked over to his wife and kissed her on the cheek. He then turned to his daughter and smiled. "And how was your day, my daughter?"
"It was went well," replied Annaara respectively. She set the table while her mother brought out the food. They ate dinner in perfect silence.
The next week was the same for Annaara. She went to school, came home and did her homework, helped with cooking, and cleaned up after dinner. On one faithful day, however, Mr. Wagashi assigned the class partner projects for their Egypt unit. Annaara was paired up with the boy who sat by her: Yugi Mutou. The project consisted of a 3D model and an oral presentation for the class. On her way to lunch she came across Yugi who was accompanied by his friends.
"Annaara, wanna sit with us today at lunch?" asked Tea. Annaara stopped in her tracks. She wasn't sure what she just heard. Turning to Tea and the others she said, "I guess."
"Great! Come on," exclaimed Tea, as she grabbed Annaara's hand and pulled her along. Annaara was visibly uneasy but her subtle mask returned. Once the got to their usual spots the gang introduced themselves.
"By the way, this is Joey, Tristan, and you know Yugi, and I am Tea," introduced Tea.
"Hi, I'm Annaara," said the girl not looking at them.
"Nice to meet you," Joey said. "Hope you're enjoying school."
"It's not that bad," replied Annaara softly. "I did have a run in with another boy. He was colder than any others I've seen."
"You mean Kaiba?" asked Tristan bitterly, pointing to Seto who was across the room. The Egyptian girl nodded. Tea rolled her eyes and commented, "He isn't that greatest of people. Anytime we've helped him he just brushed us off like nothing."
"I am with Tea this on this," agreed Joey. "I think he makes a stone look hot." While everyone went on about Kaiba, Annaara remained ever silent.
After school Yugi hurried over to Annaara before she started home.
"Hey, Annaara," he called as he walked up to her. He tapped her shoulder. When he did he noticed the she stiffed. She turned around to see him. "I was wondering when you want to get together after school to work on the project." Never meeting his gaze, Annaara remained silent for a moment then answered in a hushed tone, "Whenever you want to. I'm open any day."
"How about tomorrow after school?"
"That works with me," Annaara said quietly. With out another word she turned and walked off, leaving Yugi thinking. Turning to his friends, who were waiting for him, he jogged over to where they waited.
"You guys," Yugi began, "it is just me or does Annaara seem…too quiet? I personally have yet to see her talk much and look directly at others." The others were silent, absorbing this observation.
Tea finally broke the silence, "You're not the only one, now that I think about it. She seems too…too…'respectful' if that can describe anything. Do you think she is like that naturally, or that it has something to do with family problems?"
Yugi thought about that. "I don't know, but I think it may have something to do with her life back in Egypt. That is just my guess though. I did notice how she seemed anxious when we touch her or something. I just tapped her on the shoulder and she reacted like I was going to do something to her."
"Really?" Tea said. "I never really took note of that."
"Why do you think she would think we would hit her or something?" Tristan asked.
"I'm not sure," Yugi replied. "Maybe if we spent some time with her she might open up and relax around us."
"Ya know, Yuge," Joey said smugly with a mischievous grin, "we could take her around the city and show her what we do in our daily lives."
"If she was to spend too much time with you, she might shy back into her shell further, Joey," Tea commented teasingly. Everyone laughed and started for Yugi's place.
