"Sire, a large army of commoners is forming out front! I told you we needed to leave!" Khay called, running into the throne room.

The fake leader looked up at Khay. "Don't worry. They can do nothing..."

"The bastard that claims to be Pharaoh killed ten of my men with a look, sire! They can do plenty!" Khay cried.

"He will wear himself out quickly. He won't make it this far..."

"Is that so?" The Pharaoh, or Yii, walk into the throne room, the other three with Items behind him. Pakhet and other commoners filed in behind these four as they walked up to the throne.

"Get out of my palace!!" The fake leader shouted.

"Shut up!" The Rod in Seto's hand flashed. "Now, get off that throne." He added, his blue eyes cold.

The man got down and kneeled before Yii. He didn't have any other choice. Seto was controlling him with his Rod. Yii nodded to his friend and walked up to the throne.

Suddenly, something hit him square in the back, blood sprouting from the wound. Yii didn't cry out, just turned around and pointed to Khay. Bakura's hand flew up with the Ring and the man disappeared. Yii closed his eyes painfully and sat in his throne.

"Yii!" Pakhet ran up to him. "I-I can find a healer if you want..."

Yii smiled and held up a hand. "Pakhet, I told you. Baba, or Ay, is now Pharaoh! Treat him with the same respect and kindness as you would myself, and I'm sure he'll do the same to you!" Yii shouted to his people, then nodded to his friends before looking back at Pakhet. "Give these things to Baba. He'll know what to do with them." He told her kindly.

Yii, Bakura, Seto, and Malik all began to glow. The Puzzle around Yii's neck, the Ring in Bakura's hand, and the Rod in Seto's hand all started glowing. As soon as the glow engulfed the room, it was gone.

The Pharaoh, the High Priest, a lowly thief, and the palace spy were dead.

The kingdom wept.

~~^*About Five Thousand Years Later*^~~

A young boy finished placing his new Puzzle together. The Sennen Puzzle started to glow and a spirit that looked like Yii appeared, blinking. He looked at the frightened boy kindly. "Little one, what is your name?" He asked calmly.

"Yuugi..." The boy whispered.

"Well, hello there, Yuugi. You can call me Yami." The man smiled.

"H-hello, Yami-sama..." Yuugi whispered, clearly terrified.

Yami knelt before the boy. "What are you afraid of, Yuugi?" Then he caught sight of the Puzzle, laying on the floor next to them. He picked it up with a frown. ~I wonder if the others have found their ways out yet...~ He thought sadly.

"Why are you sad, Yami-san?" Yuugi asked, coming over to look at the Puzzle the man held.

Yami forced himself to smile for the innocent boy. "No reason, Yuugi. No reason at all." He glanced back at the Puzzle.

Yuugi hugged Yami carefully, to comfort him. "Yami-san, do you want to be my friend?" Yuugi asked.

Yami looked at Yuugi with a little surprise. "Sure."

"Yeah! I have a friend!" Yuugi cheered.

Yami's eyes widened in surprise. "Are you saying I'm your only friend?" He asked the boy.

Yuugi nodded sadly. "Yeah... I mean, there's always Anzu, but I don't want her to get hurt for my sake..."

"What do you mean by that?"

"I get beat up at school, and sometimes by my dad, when he's drunk." Yuugi mumbled.

Yami's eyes flashed. "Your father beats on you?"

"Yeah, but only when he's drunk!" Yuugi tried to amend what he'd said. "He's really great the rest of the time!"

Yami shook his head. "Getting drunk is no excuse for anything, Yuugi. No one should ever beat up on anyone else."

"You're not going to hurt him, are you?" Yuugi asked desperately as Yami stood.

"Where is he?" Yami asked coldly.

"Yuugi!" A man's voice shouted from downstairs as the door slammed shut behind him. Yuugi flinched.

~Damnit, otosan's drunk again!~ Yuugi thought.

"He's drunk." Yami pointed out the obvious.

Yuugi blinked up at Yami, surprised. "How do you know?"

"I used to hang out in pubs, Yuugi. I know what a drunk man sounds like."

"Yuugi! Get down here!" Yuugi's dad shouted.

Yuugi moved towards the door, but Yami placed a hand on his shoulder, stilling him. "Yuugi, let me come down with you." Yami pleaded.

Yuugi, surprised, nodded. ~Not even Anzu would ever stand up for me...~ Yuugi thought. Then he noticed the muscles rippling under Yami's shirt. ~Then again, Anzu is a girl who sucks in gym, so how would she ever take on otosan.~

The two walked into the living room, where Yuugi's father stood. "What have I told you about bringing friends home?" Yuugi's father asked his son coldly, closing in on the two. His hand came up to meet Yuugi's face, but was stopped by Yami's.

Yami's red eyes were cold. "Don't touch him." He hissed.

"How do you plan to stop me, boy?" The man asked, pulling his hand away as Yuugi ran to hide behind his new protector.

"Well, I could knock you flat on your ass, but I think I should leave you concious long enough for you to learn your lesson." Yami said calmly.

The man's hand flew towards Yami's stomach, but Yami was quicker and sent the man flying backwards into the wall. "Yami-san, please don't hurt him." Yuugi begged.

Yami smiled down at the boy. "Yuugi, I can promise not to kill him, but not hurting him is a bit of a stretch. I can promise to not do any serious damage." Yuugi nodded, accepting the other's terms. Then Yami turned back to Yuugi's father, who still stood against the wall, breathing heavy. Yami moved towards the man, leaving Yuugi unguarded.

Yuugi's father tossed a plate at Yuugi and Yuugi cried out as it hit his arm, leaving a couple cuts when it shattered. "Take that!" The man shouted, picking up a new plate.

The new plate exploded in his hands as the Puzzle that was around Yami's neck started to glow. A third eye in the center of the ancient Pharaoh's forehead also started to glow. "Pick up another plate and I'll make sure every shard cuts your skin." Yami hissed, his red eyes blazing with hatred for the man.

Tha man stood rooted to his spot, totally terrified. "My God..." He whispered. ~I must be drinking too much, but I feel totally sober all of a sudden. That new friend of Yuugi-chan's... He's no normal human... He has some sort of power, and he knows how to use it... It must have something to do with that Puzzle otosan got for Yuugi-chan... He said it would protect it's holder. This must be what it meant...~ The man fell to his knees, bowing his head. "I plea defeat." He whispered.

The third eye disappeared and the Puzzle stopped glowing. Yuugi immeadiately rushed to his father's side, the cuts on his own arm forgotten. "Otosan, are you alright?" Yuugi asked.

The man smiled at his son, then drew him into a hug. "I'm fine, Yuugi-chan. I'm fine." He looked up at Yami. "I'm Asa. What do they call you, Protector?"

Yami nodded his head. "I am Yami."

"Darkness..." Asa nodded. "So be it." He looked at the cuts on Yuugi's arm. "Let's get these cleaned up, eh, Yuugi-chan?"

"Okay!" Yuugi let his father pick him up and carry him to the bathroom, Yami following closely behind. "Otosan?" Yuugi asked suddenly.

"Hum?" Asa pulled out the things he'd need.

"I thought you were drunk. How'd you get sober all of a sudden?" Yuugi asked innocently.

Asa paused and pursed his lips. "I guess, I wasn't as drunk as I thought I'd been..." He glanced up at Yami, who nodded. "It must have worn off in my anger." He put some peroxide on a bit of clean cloth and dabbed it on Yuugi's wounds. ~I guess Yami doesn't want Yuugi-chan to know of his powers yet...~ He thought. ~How strange...~

"Ow!" Yuugi cried suddenly as Asa's cloth dabbed a deep cut.

Asa frowned and looked at the cut closely. A shine in the skin caught his eye and he let out a hiss. "What is it?" Yami asked from the doorway.

"A sliver of glass got in one of the cuts." Asa growled, reaching for the tweezers.

Yami's hand landed softly on his shoulder. "Let me see." Yuugi looked at Yami questioningly. "In my past, some people knew some magic. I know a little bit of healing magic, and I might be able to get that out without further hurting you." Yami explained. "Do you want me to try?"

Yuugi blinked a few times, then nodded. Asa moved to the side so Yami had a little more room. Yami put his hand over the wound and closed his eyes. After a moment, he stood and moved to the side. He let the glass in his hand fall into the trash, and Asa was surprised to see how many pieces fell from the man's hand. "Okay..."

Yami leaned against the doorframe again. "Yami-san, what were in your past?" Yuugi asked as Asa went back to work on his arm.

Yami thought for a moment before answering. "A commoner in Egypt. I worked for the Pharaoh, as one of the only two palace spies. The other spy and I didn't get along as well as one might have hoped, but we knew how to work together. When the Pharaoh was murdered, I worked in the pub and inn of one of my friends in town."

"Oh. You said you used to hang out in pubs..." Yuugi sighed. "Was it nice back in Egypt?"

Yami sighed. "It was nice, but dangerous. You can't imagine what it's like to be a spy and have to keep your identity from some of your closest friends, then have to hide from the man who killed your Pharaoh, because you were a wanted criminal." He smiled suddenly. "But, Egypt was my home, and, yes, I loved it for it's beauty. It was much hotter than here, of course..." He thought for a moment. "Where are we, anyway?"

"Domino City, Japan."Asa replied as he placed a couple bandages over Yuugi's wounds.

Yami frowned, deep in thought. ~Japan... A lot has changed, I guess. I wonder how long it's been... Oh, it doesn't matter! I'll go to school with Yuugi tomorrow, help him with those bullies... Uhg, I miss home...~ He sighed and rubbed his forehead. "I'm going back into the Puzzle, okay?" He met Yuugi's eyes.

"Okay... Come out later?" Yuugi asked sadly. He was worried about his new friend.

Yami flashed the boy a genuine smile. "I promise. I just need to do some thinking. I'll be back out in an hour or a little more." He was gone.

The Puzzle floated over to Yuugi, who took it and held it close to his chest. "Hey, otosan, do you like Yami-san?" He asked his father.

Asa sighed, helping his son to stand while he thought about the question. "I think... Things will be getting very interesting around here..."

Yuugi smiled. "Yup!"

"And I don't think I'll be getting drunk any time soon, either." Asa added.

Yuugi's eyes brightened. "Yeah!" Then he skipped from the room, purple eyes happy.

Asa sighed. "It's good to see him happy, but, I..." He sighed again and shook his head. "Very interesting indeed!" He rolled his eyes, then went to make them some dinner, something he almost never did. Being sober when one got home made a big difference in what one did during the day.

~~^*About Two Hours Later*^~~

Yami popped out of the Puzzle in Yuugi's room. The boy and his father were sitting at Yuugi's desk, bent over something. Yami walked over to see, not disturbing them.

"No, no..." Asa groaned. "It was Kyoto! Yuugi, get it right!"

Yuugi flinched, then hurried to fix something on the piece of paper. "Kyoto, then." He grumbled, looking up. He saw Yami and smiled. "Yami-san, you finally came out! Are you hungry? We saved you some food!"

Yami smiled at the boy. "What are you doing, Yuugi?"

Yuugi made a face. "Homework. I have to do it. At least I get it done, unlike some of the boys in my class!" He smiled suddenly. "Katsuya never turns in his homework!"

"Yami, if you'd like, I'll get you something to eat while Yuugi-chan gets back to work. I need a break, and we're distracting him." Asa suggested.

"But..." Yuugi started to whine.

Yami placed a hand on his shoulder. "Get back to work. The sooner you're done, the sooner you can play. Work should always come first." He ruffled the boy's hair, then followed Asa from the room and into the kitchen.

Asa pulled something from the refridgerator and placed it in the microwave. Yami's eyes widened as he watched the food cook. Asa smiled widely. "It's a microwave. It cooks our food for us."

"Amazing..." Yami looked at the man. "What magic runs this?"

Asa bit back his laughter. "It's not magic, Yami. It's science." He shook his head. "You really aren't from around here, are you?"

Yami sighed. "By my calculations, I've been trapped in the Puzzle for a few thousand years. I could be wrong..."

Asa was gaping at the man, but snapped out of his stupor when the microwave beeped that it was done. Then he got another quiet laugh out of Yami's reaction to the sudden sound. "It's the microwave, Yami. No one's gonna hurt us." He mumbled, pulling the thing out of the microwave and placing it on a plate he'd had out. He motioned towards the table. "Have a seat."

Yami sat and accepted his plate quietly. He nibbled a little of the food at first, then started eating a little quicker, until it was all gone. He looked at the empty plate, then up at Asa, who sat across from him. "What was that?" Yami asked suddenly.

Asa grinned widely. "Macaroni & Cheese. I'm not a good cook, so I just threw something together. I take it you like it?"

Yami sighed. "Yes. I shall have to remember this 'Macaroni & Cheese'. It may be useful..."

Asa frowned as he thought of something. "How'd you get stuck in the Puzzle?"

Yami choked on nothing, his eyes showing his surprise at this question. "Ah... I placed myself in there?" He phrased it like a question.

"It was a Pharaoh who placed souls in the Sennen Items, Yami. What aren't you telling me?" Asa returned.

~Moron! Ra, I should have done that quietly! Argh!~ Yami groaned. "Fine. You win." He rubbed his forehead. "I was Pharaoh back in Egypt."

"You said the Pharaoh was killed." Asa pointed out.

"I lied." Yami replied sharply, then he stood coldly. "I'm going to go see if I can help Yuugi." He turned to go.

"Why don't you want Yuugi-chan to know of your past, Yami?" Asa asked kindly.

Yami's shoulders slumped. "Let it be, Asa. I will tell Yuugi when I think he's ready." He hurried from the man's sight.

Asa frowned at where Yami had disappeared. "And so the mystery continues to unfold." He mumbled before moving to clean up Yami's plate.

~~^*Yuugi's Room, An Hour Later*^~~

"Sleep well, aibou." Yami mumbled, tucking in the covers around Yuugi, then sitting on the edge of his bed.

"Hey, Yami-san?" Yuugi mumbled.

"What is it?"

"Can you tell me a story about Egypt?" Yuugi pleaded.

Yami smiled. "How can I turn you down?" He sighed and leaned back on the bed. "Let's see... How about the story of how the Pharaoh retook his thrown, with the help of some of his friends?"

"Okay..." Yuugi snuggled against Yami's side.

"Well, a long time ago, there was a Pharaoh, his High Priest, an annoying thief, and a palace spy. These four were best friends, but they had been hiding from a man who had stolen the Pharaoh's throne a few years ago. Now, they worked as commoners, hiding in the capital city with the High Priest's nephew. One day, while the High Priest was getting the annoying thief, the nephew ran into one of the imposter ruler's guards. The only problem was that this guard knew the nephew and said that he was taking him to be arrested. The Pharaoh and the spy ran to the scene. When the nephew tried to get away, the guard broke the nephew's arm.

"To save the nephew, the Pharaoh revealed his true self and killed all of this guard's men, then sent the guard to warn the imposter that he would attack soon. A friend of the Pharaoh who had lived in the city for a long time as a commoner asked a friend to heal the nephew's arm, then they returned to where the Pharaoh and his friends were lodging, to wait for the High Priest and the annoying thief. When these two arrived, the High Priest said good-bye to his nephew, then the four friends and many commoners swarmed to the palace.

"The imposter didn't heed his guard's warning and remained in the palace. When the Pharaoh and his friends and people walked into the throne room, the imposter ordered them out, but the High Priest used his powers to force the imposter from the throne and the Pharaoh walked back up to his proper seat. The guard the Pharaoh had spared had been in the room, though, and he shot an arrow into the Pharaoh's back. The Pharaoh didn't cry out, since everyone could see the blood, but turned and pointed to the guard. The annoying thief killed the man and the Pharaoh sat on his throne for the last time."

"Then, the Pharaoh died?" Yuugi asked sadly.

"In a way, yes. He died to that time, but my people have always believed in reincarnation, and the Pharaoh had been told in his dreams that, when he died on that day, he must use his magic to make sure he and his three faithful friends would come back into this world again, at the same time, to stop another evil that was sure to strike. He gave his kingdom over to the High Priest's nephew, since the Pharaoh had never had any children of his own." Yami explained.

"Hey, Yami-san?"

"Yes?" Yami looked at the boy next to him.

"Were you one of those people?"

Yami's eyes widened, then he smiled. "You're a smart boy, Yuugi. Yes, I was one of them. Maybe, sometime soon, I'll tell you which one." He ruffled the boy's hair fondly. "But not tonight. We have school tomorrow, and we both need some sleep."

"You're coming to school with me tomorrow?!" Yuugi asked, excited.

"If you go to sleep." Yami warned.

Yuugi nodded and closed his eyes, curling up even tighter against Yami's side. Yami sighed and kissed the boy's forehead lightly before returning to the Puzzle, where he could sleep better.
