"The God's are angry!" The High Priest Seth's statement to the general public was met with worried murmuring.
One man in the crowd said what everyone else was thinking, "High Priest Seth, please tell us, what can we do to calm our mighty God's?"
"Sacrifices!" The reply from Seth sent the murmuring to a higher level. The people wanted more answers, but the High Priest turned on his heel, and went back into the temple. He sat down, waiting for a messenger from the Pharaoh. He did not have long to wait. A man came running into the temple, bowing and murmuring a thousand apologies.
"Well, what is it?" The High Priest Seth was not well known for his patience.
"The mighty Pharaoh demands an audience with you, immediately."
"Very well."
The High Priest rose from his chair, and followed the messenger; Seth in turn was followed by a string of young priests-in-training whose job it was to fan him. High Priest Seth had as much power as the Pharaoh did. In a way, he possessed more, for while people may question the Pharaoh, behind his back of course, no one was stupid enough to question the decisions made by he who spoke with the Gods. The people of Egypt respected the High Priest, he was said to be a channel through which the God's spoke. They walked through the streets, the crowds backed off on both sides with respect. A peasant woman stood in front of them, holding her daughter by the shoulder. The messenger tried to get her to move. Threatening to strike her down where she stood.
"Please, High Priest Seth, have mercy on me, I merely want you to cure my daughter." Her high-pitched plea moved the crowd's heart, they watched intently, not a word was spoken, all eyes were on the drama that was unfolding before them.
Seth knew what he should do. He pushed the messenger aside, and laid a hand on the shoulder of the girl. He muttered some incantations, and the girl, who was previously terribly deformed, was transformed into an adorable child with not a blemish in her appearance. The mother burst into tears, Seth leaned down, and the girl, got on her toes, and kissed him on the cheek. The mother burst again into tears. The people cheered.
The mother grasped the High Priest by the hand and shook it vigorously, saying, "You are truly a messenger from the Gods." She then disappeared into the crowd, exclaiming the greatness of the High Priest.
The crowd parted anew, and allowed them to walk by, amid loud bouts of clapping. They arrived at the Pharaoh's palace, and were admitted, once they were inside, the High Priest demanded hot water and a cloth be brought for him. When they were obtained, one of the Priests-in-training, cleaned Seth's hands, and rubbed clean the cheek where he had been kissed by the girl.
He made a face, "Commoners," he said, his voice cold.
The Pharaoh entered the room. "Seth," the High Priest curled his hands into fists, the Pharaoh was the only one who dared to call him that to his face. He motioned for the High Priest to take a seat. Seth was relieved; he sunk into the comfortable chair. Doing spells drained energy like you wouldn't believe. "What is this about a sacrifice?"
"Pharaoh, my men and I have witnessed many strange events recently, and it has been determined that the God's are angry, and their anger must be soothed."
"What if you're wrong?"
"Are you saying that I have made a miscalculation in my determining of the cause behind these strange events?" All the servants in the room left the room, the High Priests voice had been steely, and they were not stupid, they knew how much he hated being questioned, the only one who dared to do it, was the Pharaoh.
"It's possible, isn't it?"
"You challenge my decision, then."
"No, of course I don't, I just want to know what we must do." The High Priest smirked; the Pharaoh was a weak fool, who had no spine.
"Very well, we need only the most beautiful virgin in the land."
"Why?"
"It will appease the God's. Do you dare to go against the God's wishes?"
"Of course not. The search will begin immediately."
"That is all I need, Pharaoh; I shall leave you in peace."
"Thank you. Please organize the search, you shall head it of course. Use however many of my men that you need."
Seth frowned, he was not supposed to go on this search, however, he thought it wise not to argue.
"Yes, Pharaoh." Seth rose, and bowed to the Pharaoh.
Once he had left, the Pharaoh collapsed onto his throne.
