Sudden Misfortune

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Pardon? He's with Kaiba? Why?"
Silence. "Uh, I really have to go, sorry. Goodbye Shika." And she hung up.
I frowned even harder and slammed the phone down yelling at it, "Fine! Don't tell me why then!!"
"Okay this is a rather strange morning…" Ryou said.
"You're telling me!! Jou is over at Kaiba's house! Last time I heard they were mortal enemies!"
Ryou twitched a bit, hardly fazed by what I was saying. "That can't be good."
Fuming, I stomped down the hall to my room and grabbed some clean clothes. "I'll be in the shower!" I yelled down the hall to Ryou.
Back in the kitchen, Bakura came out of his ring. "She's feisty…" he said.
"She needs anger management." Ryou replied.
Before long, Ryou and I were on our way to Kaiba's mansion. I was still trying to suss out what on earth Jou would be doing with Kaiba. They had been in that many fist fights and arguments that it just seemed so unlikely for this to happen. When we arrived at the mansion, I knocked furiously on the front door, and a butler instantly opened it.
"Can I help you, madam?"
"Yeah, err… is Jounouchi Katsuya here?"
The butler looked at me with confusion. "Well, Mr. Kaiba did have a friend stay here last night… I'll call them down. Come on in and take a seat."
Together Ryou and I made ourselves comfortable on a couple of chairs in the foyer. Jou and Kaiba reluctantly came down in a matter of minutes. I turned and looked at Jou, who looked every bit as guilty as Kaiba. They were both half naked, dressed in only a pair of baggy jeans which looked as if they had been pulled on in a hurry. Jou's hair looked like a bird's nest.
"What are you doing here?" I asked Jou sternly.
"Uh… I, err…"
"We had an assignment to catch up on. Jou just happens to be in my English class." Kaiba interrupted. He wasn't a very good liar. I turned my gaze back to Jou, who shifted uncomfortably.
"Yeah, right. Here, you can have your jacket back." I said, chucking his green coat into his arms roughly.
"Oh come on Shika! Don't be like that!" Jou said.
But before he could do any more to upset me I was already gone. Ryou walked with me hastily down the street toward an intersection. He seemed to struggle to keep up with me.
"Why are you upset again, Shika?" he asked, grating into my nerves.
I stopped dead in my tracks. "Why am I upset? I'm not upset! I'm fucked off! I've just realized that my best friend is gay with the most arrogant brute at school! I have two boyfriends, one of which is dead! Malik is being an asshole! My mom is on the other side of the world! What else could go wrong huh?" I screamed.
Ryou looked intimidated, and then, suddenly, he warped into Bakura. My vision started going hazy, and in slow motion. All I could see was Bakura leaping out to grab me with a hurt expression glinting in his eyes. I frowned through the haze, trying to figure out what was going on, then somewhat instinctively, I looked to my left and was blinded by a horrendous impact.
"Is she alright?"
"That was the most horrific thing I've ever seen!"
"For Ra's sake someone call an ambulance!"
"Her leg looks in pretty bad shape."
"Look at her eye! She's lucky if she gets her eyesight back from that."
All these people… staring down at me… talking, shouting… panicking. The smooth, hot metal beneath me was piercing against my grazed skin and my eyesight was flooded with dark liquid. My fingers twitched as I felt the glass slice open my skin. I was a bloody mess from what eyesight that I had left. I felt like I had lost my legs, and before I knew it… I was… gone.
"Noooo! No! No!!! Shika! Come on! Don't you dare call it quits now!"
Normal POV…
Shika's eyes were closed. She was still comatose after almost three weeks. Afet had returned home immediately from Turkey once she found out that her daughter had been hit by a car on a busy Domino City intersection. Ryou wouldn't stop crying. Bakura shed a few tears too. Jou felt more guilty than ever. As did Anzu for the way she had been behaving around Ryou. Malik seemed to be incredibly hurt also. Shika was lucky that she walked away with a severely broken leg, a few cracked ribs, a dislocated shoulder and a deep cut under her left eye, which would scar for a lifetime. She looked unpleasantly mangled up on that car bonnet, though, nearly smashing right through the windscreen.
Jou's POV…
How could Ra let this happen? How could I let this happen? Shika… my best friend… she could have died! I'm a terrible friend… if I hadn't have stayed at Seto's house she wouldn't have stormed off and been blinded by her own fury and walked out in front of that car… that bastard was speeding anyway… it wasn't entirely her fault.
Great, Ryou's crying again. This room is so full of sadness. Ryou's yami looked over at me blankly. A slight sense of fury erupted inside me like a small volcano. I felt like knocking Ryou's "innocent" lights out. The least he could do was hold in his tears. There's no point in crying over spilt milk. Shika's a tough girl, she's going to make it. I know it.
Normal POV…
Ryou and Bakura had chosen to stay with Shika 24/7. The nurses even brought them their meals. Bakura had threatened the doctors to let them both stay and watch over their girlfriend. She would recover. He knew that much.
Ryou groaned as he fought to clear his mind from the unrelenting sleep and the haunting dreams that filled it. His back was wildly protesting the position that he was in Worry flickered into his mind and he forced his eyes open to see how his lover was doing. To his surprise he found himself staring into deep forest green colored orbs. He was unable to move as he was face to face with Shika who was sitting upright in her bed, smiling weakly at him.
"Bakura! Bakura wake up!" Ryou cried, shaking his yami awake who was snoring rudely, sitting on a chair with his head resting back against the wall.
"Is she awake?"
"She's awake Bakura! She's awake!"
Bakura's eyes shot open and he raced to the bedside, clasping Shika's hand. Ryou leant in and kissed her lips, loving the feeling of being kissed back. Two and a half weeks was far too long to go without the addictive feeling of a passionate kiss. Soon it was Bakura's turn to kiss Shika; kissing her equally as fervent as Ryou had.
Shika's eyes gazed down her own body, first at her arm which was in a sling, then her bandaged ribs, and finally her mangled leg which had been straightened with iron pins and put in a cast to heal.
"I'm so glad you've finally woken up!" Ryou squealed, putting his arms around Shika's neck.
"What do you mean finally woken up? What happened? Why am I in the hospital?" she replied hoarsely.
"You have been in a coma for three weeks now." Bakura answered.
Shika gasped. "Shit… do you mind telling me what happened?"
Ryou, teary eyed with joy that she was alive and well, told her what happened briefly. She paled at the news and asked where her mother and the rest of her friends were.
After another couple of days, Shika was up and about on her crutches, although her ribs still hurt severely. She had seven stitches in the slash below her eye, and hadn't yet seen the damage. Bakura helped her when she fell or slipped, Ryou made most of her meals when Afet was out at work or whatnot and Afet bathed her and cleaned her wounds each day to prevent infection. Shika couldn't thank her friends and family enough for their help. Yugi seemed to be at her side twenty-four-seven at school, aiding her and helping her around.
Shika's POV…
"Ra damned bloody annoying stupid fucking crutches." I cursed under my breath as I was struggling into my uniform for school.
"Need a hand in there, honey?" my Mom asked from outside my bedroom door.
"I'm fine!" I yelled back.
When Ryou and I arrived at school, we saw Jou and Kaiba talking together next to the lockers. I despised Kaiba. He was the rudest most arrogant, pig-headed stuck up human on the face of the planet. Not to mention rich. He made me sick to my stomach. The fact that Jou was bisexual didn't faze me, I mean practically everyone at Domino High was either gay or bisexual, there were hardly any straight students here. It's just the fact that he had to be with Kaiba is what set me on edge.
"Hey Shika, how are you feeling today?" Jou departed his new "lover" and came to talk to Ryou and me.
I shrugged, and eyed Kaiba who was haughtily smirking my way. "Fine I guess." With that said I hobbled off. Jou still wasn't my favourite person at the moment, and boy did he know it. Nobody yet knew that Ryou and I were an item, either.
"I'd better get off to my physics class. Agarito-sensei scares the crap out of everyone in our class if they're late." Ryou said, kissing my cheek before dashing off toward the sciences block. I sighed a bit and turned to walk off to my maths class. Abruptly, as I turned around, I faced a familiar broad chest rather close to my face. I raised my eyebrows and looked up to the face who was staring down at me. A flaming sense of worry burned in his lavender eyes as I peered up at him.
"You had me worried, babe." Malik said.
"I only got hit by a car." I said sarcastically as I began to stumble off again on my crutches.
"I'm serious. Shika, I'm sorry for what happened at the arcade all those weeks ago. I just can't help it. I can't stand it, even. Why'd we even break up in the first place, Shika?" Malik asked with a helpless expression in his eyes. He grasped my hands in his.
"We weren't even going out, Malik! You were the one who wanted to stop seeing me! You hurt me, Malik! I don't need this right now!" I tore my hands out of his and continued down the corridors.
"Shika! Can't we work this out?" he yelled down the hall, his dazzling voice echoing.
"Not a chance!" I growled angrily. "You're an asshole, Malik!" I looked back at him quickly; his fists were clenched by his sides.
Work what out? We have nothing! I've got no more feelings toward him anymore. Ryou and Bakura are my lovers now, not him! As much of a heart-throb Malik might be, as much as I know how much the girls want him, need him, fantasize over him, lust after him, desire him, I don't care! I've had my time with him, and it's surely my last. Malik and I are history, and that's that. I decided.
