I'm with you

~*~this is a Tea/Yami fanfic (my first!) It's based (almost) entirely on Avril Lavigne's "I'm with you" from her Album "Let Go". I've included a shortened copy of the lyrics at the end for theos who haven't heard the song yet. For the purpose of making sense of this fic, Yami and Yugi are two different people, it just makes life easier. BUT...I don't own the lyrics. I don't own the characters. I don't own much of anything, but that's ok.
Here we go...~*~

Tea stood alone, on the tall bridge near the beach. The sky was clouded, rain came down slow and cold, the dripping waters the only thing hiding her tears. "They don't even realize I exist any more! Now that Tristan's learned Duel Mosnters, that's all they do. I can't play as well as them. I never will." Tea slammed her fists down hard on the metal railing. "Oooh... I don't even care. Yugi and Joey and Tristan...Grrr...they can have their games. And Yami? Hah! That dumb card game is all he knows." Even as she said this, she knew that it wasn't her friends and their preaccupation with the game that drove her out into the rain...It was Yami. She couldn't stand the fact that she had fallen for him. He was so...stubborn! Arrogant! Dark... A heavy sob escaped from Tea's lips. Why was she so upset? he's just some guy... She didn't even know anything about him! All she knew was that he used to be her best friend's dark side. Why did he have this effect over her? It was like there was some deep need, almost a hole in her heart. Tea felt rotten inside. She couldn't go home, not like this. Any other time, she would have gone to Yugi, but she just couldn't. Wiping her face for the hundredth time, she decided to walk down the beach, just to be alone...

"Hah! Go, Red Eyes, Black Dragon! Take that, Tristan!" Joey jumped in the air after placing the card that secured his victory. Tristan jokingly growled "Yeah, Joe, it must be nice to finally have someone you can actually beat, even if I'm just an ameture..." Yugi broke up the third fight of the night, shoving each boy into a corner and forcing them to apologise. "Come on, Yug, it's all in good fun! Wanna match?" Joey asked. "First, Joey, I've already beaten you five times tonight. Second, it's getting late. Maybe you should call it a night..." "Yeah, Joey, before you hurt yourself", Tristan broke in. The three laughed, but then Joey and Tristan decided to leave. It was late, and it was getting colder and darker by the minuet. The pair said a quick good bye to Yugi and also to Yami, who had been sitting in a corner by himself all night, and were then on their way. After Joey and Tristan left, Yugi aproached his counterpart.
"Yami, what's wrong? You didn't duel anyone once!"
Yami looked lost in thought. He didn't answer right away. After some brief prodding, Yami spoke.
"I'm sorry, Yugi. I have just been thinking about a few things."
"Tea again?"
Yami nearly jumped out of his skin. How did Yugi know? And exactly why was he laughing?
"Aww, Yami, come on...You lived in my head long enough that I would know when you have a crush..."
Yami's face turned the same crimson as the ends of his hair. "I think she's...interesting. That's all."
"Right." Yugi smiled as he walked away. It was then that it struck him: "Hey, Yami, why do you think she never showed up? I mean, I told her that we were all going to be here...?"
Yami looked back at the younger image of himself. "You don't think she knows, do you? Is it possible that she's avoiding me?"
"Of course not. But I do wonder..."
Yugi picked up the phone and dialed Tea's number. No answer.
"I don't understand. If she's not at home, where is she?"

Tea had made her way onto the beach, but was now very cold and wet. "This is so stupid. I should have dressed warmer. >sigh< What a mess. I guess there's nothing I can do..." Something snagged Tea's foot. Before she knew what was happening, she had tripped on one of the rocks that lined the beachfront. As she hit the sand, a sharp pain cut through her hand; she'd fallen on a broken bottle. Blood and glass and sand now smeared across her hand, the heat of the pain mixing with the cold of the rain. She couldn't go on. "Ow! This is crazy! I need to get help! I should never have come out here alone." Tea tried to stand, but couldn't. The skirt of her school uniform was soaked, and her legs were numb with the cold. She hadn't even felt it until now, but her dancer's muscles were cramped and no longer held her up. Her head spun. "No! What do I do? there's no one around...Oh, No one will be out this way untill morning..." with that, Tea pulled herself into a tight ball in the sand and cried, a great wave emotion sweeping over her.

Yami, against Yugi's wishes, decided to go out and find Tea. Yugi had wanted to go, but Yami wouldn't hear of it; he would not let Yugi get sick. Besides, he felt strangely responsable for Tea.
"Well, Phaero Invincable, if you absolutly have to go out into the rain, take these." Yugi fumed. Yami knew the neighborhood enough to find his way, but in the dark? But he couldn't just leave the store, and what if Tea got there? Or called? He had to stay, whether he liked it or not. Yugi handed the taller boy a flashlight and a big rubbery coat. "This will keep you from getting wet, and this will light your way." To test this "flash-light" contraption, Yami clicked the button. The light shone right into his eyes. When he could see again, Yami promised not to go to far, and not to be out to long. Actually, Yami had a good idea of where Tea might be. He remembered when the group had gone to the beach, and Tea had shown him the bridge nearby. 'I like to come up here sometimes and just watch the waves...It really helps me think!' the girl had said. Yugi watched from the window as Yami disapeared into the dark, and then went to the phone and called Tristan and Joey. They would want to know what was happening.

Tea was frozen through. The rain was like ice on her skin. She had started talking out loud to keep herself awake. "I never did like the beach, except for the water. And why was I even at that stupid bridge. It's all that Yami's fault." She tried to sit up, propping herself against a near by rock. She was so tired, and the cut on her hand was so painful. She looked up at the bridge. "Not even a light anywhere. It's so cold. When did it get so cold? And so dark? How long have I been here?" Her eyes began to close. "No!" She snapped her head back up. "I will not fall asleep. I cannot!" Tea's body trembled with sobs. "I don't like it here! I want to go home! I want to be with my friends! No one's even looking for me. I'm so tired..." Lightning struck, scaring the poor frozen girl as she looked back to the bridge. She was quickly fadeing out of conciousness, and the panic she felt only added to her desperation. She found that she was to numb to even speak. 'Yami, please find me', she screamed in her mind, "Yami, please take me home! Help me!' She continued to plead in her mind until the darkness had almost compleatly taken over. Then she saw the light. Faint, but moving. Someone was calling her name...the light got dimmer and dimmer, until Tea's world went black.

Yami walked faster down the streets. Lightning slashed the sky as the storm intensified. "If she's out here, I must find her, and fast!" Thunder rolled in the distance and the wind blew in Yami's face. He felt panic, he frantic to find his friend. This girl stirred so much emotion in him; how could that be? He knew that she was special, and he had always admired her undying determination and love for her friends. Yami stopped as his forehead grew warm; his third eye! Someone was calling out to him with so much emotion that it he could see it as clearly as any soul. He focused on the voice he heard: 'Yami, find me, take me home, Yami, Yami..." the voice was Tea's, and it was fading fast. "No! I'm coming Tea, hang on!" With that, Yami tugged the heavy coat harder atound his shoulders and began to run toward the bridge, now only a few yards away. He sprinted to the top, and clicked on the flashlight Yugi had given him, and shone it around him. "Tea! Tea!?! Where are you?!" With no answer, Yami slammed his hand onto the railing...and noticed an odd shape below on the beach. someone was slumped against the rocks, and they weren't moving. Yami ran at full speed until he could clearly make out the face. Then he stopped dead. Lightning struck again and lit up Tea's soaking body and the patches of red on her clothes. "No...NO! Tea!" The former Phaero knelt beside her, shaking her furiously. Her skin was frozen, and her lips looked almost purple. Fear consumed Yami when he saw the bloody cut on her hand. He knew he didn't have much time. He pulled off his coat, wrapped it aound the frozen girl and scooped her up in his arms. He walked quickly, trying not to jostle her too much. "Tea, please don't leave us. Don't leave me. I'll help you, just hang on. I'm with you now, you'll be ok."

Yugi had gotten worried. Joey and Tristan had gone to Tea's house on their bikes, and seeing that no one was home, headed straigt back to Yugi's. "You guys," Yugi said from the window, "He's been gone a long time, do you think something's happened? What if he's lost out there?"
"I'm sure they're ok, Yug, I mean, He probably found her and they got talkin' or somethin'." Joey said, trying to reassue his friend. Tristan spoke up from the kitchen where he was making tea: "yeah, Yugi, we've all seen the was he looks at her, and she gets starry-eyed around him...maybe they're talkin it out somewhere."
"I dunno, guys. In the rain? In the cold? And it's almost midnight, nothing would be open... I think I'm gonna go look for them myself. Joey, let's..." Yugi never got chance to finish his sentance. At that moment, the door burst open, and in ran a very wet Yami carrying someone wrapped in his now blood-stained coat. "Yugi, she's so cold! She was passed out on the beach...I didn't know what to do...she's hurt!" Joey and Tristan, now realizing that it was Tea lying limp in his arms, grabbed her from the Phaero and placed her on the couch. Everything else was a blurr. Someone ran upstairs to get blankets and bandages. Tristan quickly began to clean the cut on Tea's hand. Yami felt someone's hands on his arms...it was Yugi, helping him to a chair.
"Yami, you need to sit down, you're shaking...I'll get you some tea and a blanket and..."
"Yugi...Tea? is she alright? Forget me, help Tea."
"She's in good hands. Tristan took a lot of first aid classes, he knows what he's doing. What happened?"
"I just found her there, lying on the beach. She was so cold and so pale, Yugi, I was afraid I was too late. I can't lose her, Yugi, I just can't..." For the first time in over 5000 years, Yami cried.

Something warm was covering her body. She was floating...no, she was on pillows. Her left hand burned from the cold, as did her feet and legs, but her right burned with something diferent. She saw red. Blood. 'Now I remember', the bridge, the bottle, the rain...that voice. She couldn't place it, but there was a voice. It was there before, telling her to hand on and that she would be ok. And now, it was farther away. Saying that it was afraid. She wanted to reach out to the voice, but all she could do was moan softly. Someone else said something about coming around. The red she saw turned pink, and shapes became visable. One, tall with yellow hair, was at her feet with a red bottle of some sort. A dark haired one told the blond to put the bottle under her feet, then yelled loudly that she was awake. Whatever was now by her feet was warm and squishy, like it was filled with water. Two people with the same spikey hair came into view. Everyone moved away, and people started muttering.

"I think she's ok, you guys, just really cold. The cut wasn't that deep, there just looked like alot of blood because of the rain. I got it cleaned out pretty well, tho. I'm going to go and find some asprin and things upstairs."
"Thanks, Tristan. I'm going to go boil more water," Yugi looked at Yami, who was staring in Tea's direction, the he looked at Joey. "Joey, give me a hand, will ya?"
"Give you a hand? Boiling water? Jeez, how difficult could that...youch!" Yugi stamped hard on Joey's foot, causing Joey to realize Yugi's plan. "Oh, right. Kitchen. Water." Joey hobbled into the kitchen to tend to his newly flattened foot, and Yami promised to take care of Tea.
"Man, Yug, ya didn't have to stomp so hard..."
"Quiet, Joey." Yugi wanted Yami to be the first person she saw.

Tea could see a blurr of motion as two boys vanished into another room and another climbed the stairs. The remaining boy came towards her and knelt at her side, taking her unbandaged hand in his. His hands were so warm...
"Tea, I don't know why you were out there alone. You had me very worried. I was afraid I'd lost you. When I saw you there on the beach, I realized that there were alot of things that I wanted to tell you, and it scared me to think that I may never get the chance. You see, I can't stop thinking about you. You make me feel things that I don't even fully understand. Tea, I know nothing about my past, and I don't know that I ever will. But to even think of a future without you? Impossable. Tea?"
Tea's eyes fluttered open fully, and she looked into the eyes of the former Egyptian King. "Yami, I knew it was you. I didn't think anyone would find me out there. I was so confused about myself. I just wanted to figure some things. I felt like nothing was going right, but now I know that it is. I knew you would find me and I would be ok. And I don't know who you are either, but I want to help you find out. I'm so tired, though..."
Yami smiled for the first time that night. "You'll be ok. I'm with you, and I'm not going anywhere."

I'm With You - Avril Lavigne

I'm standing on the bridge
I'm waiting in the dark
I thought that you'd be here by now
There's nothing but the rain
No footsteps on the ground
I'm listening but there's no sound

Isn't anyone trying to find me
Won't somebody come take me home

It's a damn cold night
I try to figure out this life
Won't you take me by the hand take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are but I
I'm with you...

I'm looking for a place
I'm searching for a face
Is anybody here I know
Cause nothing's going right
And everything's a mess
And no one likes to be alone...

Oh, why is everything so confusing
Maybe I'm just out of my mind...

Take me by the hand take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are but I
I'm with you...
