Okay, chapter three.....finally. I know this took WAAAYYYY longer than it should have, but I really couldn't help it. Anyway, thanks for all the reviews, I'm glad to know that people liked this. Another thing, I soooo would not have gotten this done if it hadn't been for Star-chan (Thankies!) And I want to give a MAJOR shout out to Amethyst Sin who went and reviewed most of my stories ^^

I Wish I May, I Wish I Might

By Dai-onna (and Star-chan ^_~)

Seto chewed his lip a little as he sat on the couch; his head bowed, and toyed absently with the pencil in his fingers. He ran his fingers over the length of the thin wood, almost certain that he could feel the individual grains of it as they touched his un-calloused fingers. The silence that had settled over the room was beginning to make him antsy and he was trying his best to do something that might distract him from it.

Yami had yet to say a word since they had come downstairs and, not for the first time, he wondered what the other was thinking about. He sighed deeply, beginning to wonder why the other's thoughts and opinions seemed to mean so much to him. Even a day before, he didn't think that he would have given the pharaoh's concerns a second thought, but now it seemed that he could think of little else.

He bit down on his lip, nearly snapping the pencil that he held in two , and suppressed an agitated growl. He forced his mind off of the other boy in the room, and let it fall to the next important thing in his mind.

Mokuba.

Though it did bother him that thoughts of Yami came before even thoughts of his brother, he refused to let himself dwell on it. He focused on what he was going to tell his brother but, in all truth, he was still trying to talk himself into telling him at all. He hated the thought of showing such weakness in front of his brother. It was bad enough that Yami had seen him in this state.

He bit down on his lip harder as he once again thought about the suspiciously silent boy but forced his thoughts back on track. A part of him was desperately hoping that this, what ever it was, that was making him blind would just go away so that way no one would ever have to know it even happened.

He tossed the pencil onto the coffee table in front of him with an irritated sigh and ran a hand through his messy hair, wincing slightly as his fingers got caught on the tangles.

"I - I don't think I can tell Mokuba about this, not yet." He finally said, shattering the tenuous silence. He grimaced a little at how pathetic his voice sounded, even to his own ears.

Yami nearly jolted at the sound of the other's voice as it echoed in the previously silent room, the sensual tones of it sending small shivers through him. He cursed himself internally for the reaction, wondering why he had never felt like this around the other before. He had heard Seto Kaiba speak countless times, and the only thing that it had caused him, was the desire to shut the other up.

Finally that other's words penetrated his mind and he raised a curious eyebrow, even though the other couldn't see it.

"What do you want to do, then?" He asked , softly, trying not to let his agitation with himself show in his voice.

The other boy sighed slightly and he could see that he was debating internally with himself. He resisted the urge to try and comfort the other.

"I don't know.... I just can't tell him.... Do you.... do you think Yugi would mind too much if he stayed there for a while. A few days at least." He asked softly, his voice containing something akin to a desperate hope.

He sighed softly then placed a hand on the taller boy's shoulder.

"I'm sure he'd be glad to look after him."

Seto nodded slightly in acknowledgement and went back to biting on his worn lip. As silence settled over them once again, both boys grew anxious and Yami shuffled his feet a little.

"Um.... If you tell me where a phone is... I'll go call Yugi..." He murmured.

Seto blinked up at him through sightless eyes then nodded, instructing him on how to get to his office which was at the end of the hall.

Yami nearly cried in relief at being able to get away from the other, and his conflicting emotions, even for this brief time. Whatever it was that he was beginning to feel for the other, lust, compassion, the need to comfort; it was making him very uncomfortable and it disturbed him. He took his time getting to the office, letting his thoughts wander a little, though they weren't obedient enough to stay away from the brunette he was trying to help.

It was true that Seto was attractive. No one could really deny that, but lots of people were attractive and he wasn't drawn to them. It was confusing and more than a little bothersome.

It occurred to him that seeing Kaiba his way, helpless and slightly humbled, as no one had seen him before, probably played some part in this sudden attraction, but he didn't think that that was all there was to it.

He sighed a little as he entered the dimmed office, flicking on the light and looking around for the phone. The office was meticulously neat, almost sterile, and it bothered him a little. It seemed to reflect on the cold nature that the young billionaire had always seemed to exude. He spotted the phone on the desk and reached for it, though his hand froze half way when he spotted a picture frame next to it. He blinked a little and picked up the photo, smiling softly when he saw it.

The photo was obviously an old one, of Kaiba and Mokuba when they were younger. Seto looked so happy, almost carefree, that he could barely recognize him as the boy that he had just left in the living room. It saddened him to see that such a change had taken place in the other in such a short period of time, only able to guess what he must have gone through.

He sighed once again as he sat the photo back on the desk and reached for the phone, dialing the familiar number.

He absently twirled the cord around his finger as he waited for someone to pick up on the other end, and chuckled softly under his breath when he heard a cheerful : "Moshi moshi" followed by a less than cheerful "For the last time, it's my natural hair color!!" He shook his head slightly, deciding that it was better if he didn't ask.

"Yugi? Is everything alright over there?"

There was a suspicious silence followed by, "Yami? Oh yeah, everything's just fine. " That sounded more than a little strained.

He blinked a little then rolled his eyes. "Is Mokuba there with you?"

Another silence.

"Erm....no....."Came the sheepish reply.

He raised a single eyebrow.

"Where is he?" He asked trying to keep his voice casual.

There was another pause before Yugi finally answered.

"Well, you see, I was kinda busy with customers so I asked Bakura to look after him....."

Yami's eyes widened a little. 'Oh dear......'

"....And they're really not doing anything wrong...... Bakura is just.....teaching him how to....pick locks...."

Yami blinked once again and he shook his head a little.

"Yugi, I really don't think that Kaiba is going to appreciate his brother learning how to do that." He murmured, placing his hand to his head to ward off a slight headache that talk of Bakura always caused in him.

"It's only fair really, since Mokuba is teaching him how to hack into computers." He stated, matter-of-factly. Yami snorted a little before he could even suppress the undignified reaction.

"Does Bakura even know how to use a computer?" He asked, fighting off a trickle of laughter. Yugi's giggling could be heard on the other end.

"He's only just figured out the on button ."

On the other end a slight argument could be heard, followed by a lot of giggling that could only be Yugi and a : "Okay I'm sorry, I'm sorry!! Now stop!! That tickles!!!"

He shook his head again, trying not to smile, lest he accept the fact that Bakura was actually good for Yugi to have around. He blinked a little when a voice that wasn't Yugi came on the line.

"Yami.?... Is my brother okay?" Came the soft, worried question. He smiled a little to himself and looked once again at the picture on the desk.

"Yes Mokuba, he's fine." He assured softly.

"Is he... is he mad at me?"

Yami chewed his lip a little when he heard the worried tone in the other's voice and hastened to reassure him.

"No Mokuba, he's not mad... It's just....He's going through a crisis of sorts..." He murmured, knowing that Seto didn't want Mokuba to know the truth. "Mokuba? Would it bother you too much to stay over there for a few days?" He asked hesitantly.

"wha-but I..... If that's what my Nii-sama wants...." Came the soft murmur.

"Mokuba, I promise you, Seto wants you around... it's just he's going through something trying and he doesn't want you to see him when he's not at his best. I'm sure you know that better than anyone."

".....Yeah....."

Yami decided that that was the best he was going to get, and nodded to himself.

"Okay. Could you put Yugi back on?"

"Alright." Was all he heard before the line went silent, and he shook his head a little. Kaiba damn well better do something to make this up to Mokuba once this was all over.

He pushed his thoughts aside when Yugi came back on the line.

"Yami?"

"Yugi, It's alright if Mokuba stays over there a few days, isn't it?" He asked softly, already knowing his light half's answer.

"Huh? Of course Yami. Is everything okay over there?" He bit his lip a little, debating on what to tell the other.

"Not exactly. Kaiba's going through something pretty bad, but don't worry. I'll help him as best as I can." He said softly, resolved to do just that.

On the other end of the line, Yugi blinked a little at the odd note in his Yami's voice, then smiled to himself secretively.

"Alright Yami, do whatever you can. Tell Kaiba-kun that Mokuba will be just fine over here." He assured. Yami smiled a little to himself.

" I will. Thank you, Yugi.."

"No problem."

Yami was still smiling slightly as he said goodbye and hung up the phone. His light half was such a kind, caring person. He didn't know anyone else like him.

He moved away from the desk, hesitating a little in step as he realized that he'd have to face Kaiba again. He immediately cursed himself for his cowardice. So he was attracted to the guy, that was no reason to try and avoid him like the plague.

Still.... He sighed a little to himself as he turned out the light and left the office. And so, maybe Kaiba didn't return the sentiment, that didn't mean anything. He'd been around the other before a multitude of times; he could do it again. And it wasn't as though it was a hardship to be in his company. Seto was attractive, at times kind, and possibly even considerate once you get past the ice around him. He might as well enjoy the other's company as long as he could, at least, while the other was still being civil.

After Yami had left the living room, Seto stretched out on the couch, cursing when his feet hit the end and his knees were still bent. He sighed and placed his feet on the arm of the couch, making a mental note to by a longer one whenever he got the chance. He sighed again, this time loudly, for no other reason than to break the silence in the room.

He was startled when, from his position, he was able to hear Yami talking on the phone down the hall. Not clear enough to make out words, but enough to hear the rich, husky timbre of his voice. For some reason it seemed to do wonders for his frazzled nerves. He bit on his lip a little, trying to figure out why that was. After a moment though, he decided that he was too tired to worry about it and just let himself drift, lulled by the sound of the other's voice.

He realized that he must have drifted off for a moment when he heard Yami reentering the room.

He blinked a little as he waited for the other to say something, anything.

Yami sighed a little as he sat down in a chair, closing his eyes for a brief moment before looking over at the expectant brunette. "Yugi says it's fine and Mokuba is having fun being taught the finer aspects of breaking and entering by Bakura." He told him.

Seto sat up in surprise.

"What? Yugi left my little brother in the company of a homicidal maniac?" He asked, startled. He didn't know who he was more worried for, Mokuba, Bakura, or the rest of the world if those two actually got along together.

Yami chuckled a little at the other's response.

"It could have been worse, we could have left him with Joey." He joked, trying to lighten the mood slightly.

Set blinked a moment, then snorted a little. Yami grinned when he saw the corners of the other's mouth quirk up slightly.

"But seriously, he's fine with Bakura. The tomb robber would dream of doing anything that would make Yugi mad at him. Last time he upset him, Yugi wouldn't even talk to him for a week. He's pretty much whipped now." He murmured wryly, still a little startled himself by this.

Seto's eyes widened a little and he just stared blankly for a moment.

"Bakura and.... Yugi???" He asked in disbelief. He just couldn't seem to picture it in his head.

Yami rolled his eyes a little.

"Maybe if you'd hang around more, you wouldn't be so surprised by that." He drawled.

Seto had the grace to look sheepish for a moment and wasn't sure was to say to that.

He chewed on his lip a for a few more moments before looking up in the other's direction.

"So, tell me, what other significant aspects to your little group have I missed out on during my extreme lack of attention." He asked, almost amiably. He normally wasn't one to gossip, normally didn't care one way or another, but, at the moment, he found himself wanting to know.

Yami chucked a little at that and relaxed in the chair he was in with an amused smile.

"Well, let's see... Ryou is crazy about Malik, who's just crazy by himself. Anzu and Mai are practically joined at the hip, and Joey has lost what little sense he had and has gotten involved with Yami Malik, who I'm not sure isn't still plotting all our deaths, or at the very least, mine."

Seto blinked a little as all that set in, not having seen any of that coming, and it took him a moment to recover from the slight shock. He was about to comment when something else struck him.

"And what about you? Isn't there anyone you're interested in?" He asked curiously.

Yami flushed a little and ducked his head.

".....No, I'm not involved with anyone." He hedged.

Seto noticed the other's wording, but didn't comment on it.

"It must be hard, to see everyone like that..." He murmured, knowing the feeling all to well.

Yami blinked a little at the note in the other's voice and looked at him appraisingly.

"Perhaps... I'm not upset about it, not in the least. They are all happy and with the people they love......." He trailed off for a moment. "But still......"

Seto picked up where the other left off. "It's hard to spend your life thinking you're happy, then to all of a sudden see someone else, someone with something you never even knew you wanted, and then to see how you're the only one lacking it." he murmured thoughtfully.

Yami blinked at the brunette, startled.

"I- I don't..." He stuttered slightly not certain what to say.

Seto smiled grimly, resting his face in his hands.

"That's the way I felt when I first saw Yugi. I thought I had everything I needed, my company, my brother. It seemed like enough. Then I saw Yugi and his friends and how happy they all were together. And I resented them for it. Especially Jounouchi. He could act like a complete fool, and no one would care, because they were his friends. That is the one luxury I've never been able to afford." He murmured, his voice nostalgic, and he barely even remembered that he wasn't talking to himself.

Yami blinked a little , startled. He'd never guessed that Kaiba had felt such a way, though , looking back, it did make an odd sort of sense.

"Kaiba.... They're your friends too, you know. We all are." He murmured slightly, feeling an odd sort of empathy for the brunette.

Seto was silent for a long moment before turning his eyes up at the other.

"Are you?" He asked quietly, his voice seemingly a little strained. Yami blinked a moment in surprise.
"Of course I am. Why would you ask that?"
Seto lowered his head a moment again, chewing on his tender lip, ignoring the slight pain it caused.

"You and I haven't had the greatest past, Yami. Hell, our present hasn't been ideal either. When you first showed up here, I was certain it was only because Yugi had goaded you into it, or because you felt bad for Mokuba. But you've been kind to me, more so than I deserve. And I can't figure out why you haven't laughed in my face yet. I think that maybe, if our roles had been reversed, that's what I would have done." He whispered.

Yami just stared at his downcast features for a moment before moving over to the couch, sitting next to him , and placing a hand over the brunette's shoulder comfortingly.

"Ka-- Seto... I don't think you have enough faith in yourself. You're hardly one to laugh in the face of other's misfortune, certainly not in a situation like this. And I've been kind to you because, as I said, I am your friend." He told him softly.

Seto shivered slightly from the feel of the other's hand on his shoulder, and from his words that sounded sincere. He looked up towards the other, nearly whimpering when all that he was presented with was black, instead of the other's face which he so desperately wanted to see.
There was a long, tenuous moment before he finally reached his hand up, searching for the other's face, and brushed his fingers over the pharaoh's cheek softly.

Yami jolted at the sudden contact, his skin tingling where the other's hand had connected, but didn't pull away from his touch. He held perfectly still, afraid that the slightest movement might shatter this fragile moment that seemed to have formed.

Seto trailed his fingers lightly along the other's cheek, willing a picture to form in his mind as he touched the other's surprisingly soft skin. His fingers seemed to roam of their own accord over the pharaoh's aquiline features. Over his cheek, across the soft ridges of his furrowed brow, brushing against some of the silky feeling strands of his hair, and down over his nose, his chin, back to his ears; neither one of them making the slightest sound.

Yami was frozen, entranced by the other's soft touch, as well as the look of intense concentration on his face. He wanted desperately to lean into the large, yet amazingly gentle hand, to feel its warmth as it seeped into his skin. But at the moment, he wasn't certain that he could move, even if he tried.

Seto could hear his heart thudding in his chest as his thumb brushed across the other's lips, tracing them gently. He was fascinated with how soft and supple they felt.
'I wonder what it would feel like to.....' Even as the startling thought trailed off, he was slightly aware that he was leaning forward towards the other.
Yami's eyes widened as the other began to move in, his obvious intent apparent, but couldn't bring himself to pull away. Instead he found himself closing his eyes and tipping his face up in silent assent.

Seto's breath caught in his throat the second his lips touched the other's just the slightest of touches, and felt as if the entire world seemed to shift. His hand was still on the other's cheek, rubbing it unconsciously with his thumb as he deepened the kiss slightly, pressing his lips more firmly to the other's. A soft sound escaped his mouth when he felt Yami's lips begin to move beneath his. The sound seemed distant to him, like it couldn't have possibly come from him, but it was enough for him to regain some of his senses, and he pulled back, startled, as he realized what he'd just done.
As the brunette pulled away from him, Yami dazedly brought his own fingers to his lips which were tingling and felt oddly warm. A soft flush seemed to have spread through his entire body and his heart was pounding madly in his chest.
Seto's cheeks turned a brilliant crimson as he backed away from the other awkwardly. He wasn't entirely certain why the other hadn't hit him yet or something, but he was certain that it was going to happen. Hell. he wanted to hit himself. What the hell had he been thinking? He had just kissed Yami. Someone he barely had a stable friendship with, and he had just gone and kissed him like an idiot.
'But it felt good....' He resisted the urge to sigh at that though, not wanting to concede to the fact that it was true, especially since he was still waiting for the pharaoh to kill him.

"I-I'm sorry..." He stammered. "I don't know what--" He blinked a little as he was cut off as something, presumably Yami's fingers, pressed against his lips, silencing him.

"It's alright." Yami murmured, still a little dazed, and looked up at the other's slightly panicked expression. "I didn't mind..." 'Except when you stopped....' He added silently.

Seto blinked rapidly as Yami's hand dropped away from his lip. and neither of them quite knew what to say or do at that moment.

An awkward silence settled over them and Seto fidgeted a little, searching for some sort of explanation for his actions, and only coming up with one that disturbed him. 'You want him.' His inner voice supplied, sounding entirely too amused at the whole situation.

Yami sat, more than a little restlessly, and tried to force the feeling of the other's mouth on his to leave his mind. The other's lips had been warm and firm, and the kiss had started a building a heat in his stomach that he recognized as something akin to desire, though it was a little less edgy. It felt....softer somehow. That thought concerned him just as much as the fact that the other had kissed him to begin with. 'Why did he do that? Has he figured out that I like him? Was he just toying with me? Could he.... could he possibly like me?' He shook the questions from his head, deciding not to over analyze it. Odds were, Seto was just latching on to the person closest to him while he was feeling helpless. Once he got better, or a little more settled in his current situation, then things would go back to normal between them.

He bit down on his lip a little when he realized that that thought hurt him a little more than he'd expected.

He jolted a little when he heard an ominous rumbling from the other's stomach, and then smiled grimly as he remembered that he'd yet to feed the brunette.

He stood from the couch putting some distance between them.
"I suppose I should order in, ne? Anything particular you'd like?" He asked, almost casually.
Seto blinked a little at the other's tone, but just nodded a little.

"Pizza is fine." He murmured, his cheeks still infused with color. He released a sigh he didn't realize he'd been holding back as the other left the room. He fell back onto the couch, staring blankly at the ceiling and wondering to himself.

'What the hell have I gotten myself into?'

~~Owari~~

*pants and takes a big breath.* Geez, I wrote that in two sittings.

Yami Anzu: Yeah, it just took you weeks to start writing it.

*glare* Shut up.

*Ahem* Anywho, be sure to review and tell me what you think.

Ja ne!
