Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Important Enough ❯ Important Enough ( Chapter 1 )
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
It's too long for a drabble, but too short for a one-shot. Oh well.
I wrote this for the heck of it while up late Sunday night through Monday morning, so please excuse the lack of a point.
This mini-fic is dedicated to Digimagic/Ryu-Inu. (Sorry that I couldn't do better.)
Disclaimer: I don't own Yuugiou.
Summary: [Katsuya's POV.] Katsuya's thoughts as he has a minor quarrel with Seto. [implied one-sided puppyshipping (J/S)]

His hair is always perfect - straight and brown, never messy, even after dueling. His clothes are always stiff. His eyes are always sharp, as are his words. He tries to be rigid, I think. I sometimes wonder if he'll break one day, just snapping in half, from being so inflexible. He's only close to human when he's with his brother and when he's fighting.
We fight constantly. If anyone else bothers him, he crushes them and moves on. I'm the only one he takes the time to fight with.
"What's dat, moneybags?"
"Quit barking, Mutt, and maybe you'd hear something."
"You wanna piece of dis, rich-boy?!"
He keeps going after Yugi, yeah, but Yugi's the best duelist around; he wants that prestige. I don't have any titles he's after. He doesn't pay attention to any of Yugi's other friends. He duels against Yugi, but he only fights with me.
"I don't waste my time with mongrels."
"Mongrel?! I oughtta --!"
"You ought to what?"
He seems amused. It's a little different from his I'm-so-sure-I'm-winning-that-I'm-having-fun-not-taking-you-seriously amusement. It's pathetic, but I'm glad because of that difference. I'm the only one who gets this look. It marks me as different from everyone else. It tells me I'm important enough for his attention.
"I oughtta show YOU who's a mutt!"
"I can see fine from here."
If only I could get the right kind of attention.
"You're askin' for it, Kaiba!"
I grab his collar and pull him closer to me. The world stops for a heartbeat's time. I can feel his breath: it's the only warmth coming from him. I'm looking right into blue eyes. I can tell there's something else, something behind the mild amusement, but that icy pair of his hides most everything in him too well. I wonder if he sees anything in my eyes? Could he see how I feel?
The moment ends. He breaks my grasp. "Paws off, Mutt."
"I'm not a dog!" He never sees.
"Funny, could've fooled me."
And he walks away. Not a hair out of place, never missing a beat, he wins again, and I remind myself that I'm important enough.
I'm the only one, but I'm never important enough…
